First Casualty

Well - on the way to work this morning - getting on the freeway - moderate acceleration (1/2 3/4 throttle) - shifted first - shifted second - pushed in clutch went to third - clutch still in and shifter did not feel right like not wanting to go into third and then - three rapid boom's from the driveline - felt like the back tires locked up and then released - upshifted to fifth - and continued on to work. Under acceleration everything sounds fine - but now under deceleration - clutch in our out - the rear end howls like an old hound dog (could be the tranny too I guess). I have a service appt for next Tuesday. Any ideas?

Ford offers free road side assistance. They should pickup your car for repair.

 

 

ROADSIDE SERVICE ASSISTANCE

 

(UNITED STATES, PUERTO RICO, AND U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS)

 

Your vehicle is covered by the complimentary Ford Roadside Assistance Program (unless you are driving a daily rental unit). Under this program, Ford will cover:

 

• Towing to the nearest Ford Motor Company dealership, or towing to your selling dealership if within 35 miles

• Flat tire change (vehicle must have useable spare)

• Fuel delivery (limited to two occurrences in a 12-month period up to 2 gal. gas, 5 gal. diesel)

• Jump starts

• Lock-out assistance (replacement key cost is customer responsibility)

• Winching (vehicle must be within 100 feet of a paved or county-maintained road)

 

The Roadside Assistance Program is separate from the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. It begins at the warranty start date and lasts for five years or 60,000 miles (whichever occurs first). If you need towing beyond the five years or 60,000 miles (whichever occurs first) period, Ford can arrange roadside assistance and charge your credit card. If the reason for the vehicle disablement is later found to be covered by another Ford warranty, Ford will provide a refund for the tow charge under the other warranty, through the dealership.

 

For emergency roadside assistance, call 1-800-241-3673, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

 

Ford Rental cars (FRCS) that must be towed because a covered repair has failed during the warranty coverage period, Ford will cover towing to the nearest Ford Motor Company dealership.

This may or may not be it. But did you already take off your sticker off the drive shaft? Or did it alrady come off on its own? The stickers on the drive shaft come off at some point with these cars and makes a HUGE sound when it does and sounds like something breaking.

 

I know when I heard it I almost pulled over and cried on the highway because the car had 300 miles on it and it sounded as if my entire rear end fell off.

That may have been the sound - but does not explain the rear end whine I have on decel now - definitely was not there before this morning's event. Sounds pretty bad at low speed.

 

I am trying to weigh the prospect of having this thing sitting outside at the dealership and who knows what else until next Tuesday. I would rather keep it in my possession.

Explain your anxiety about leaving your car outside to the dealer, I bet he will make sure the car is parked in a secure indoor location. Make sure you record the odometer reading when you either have it picked up or when you drop it off.

I hope it is nothing major.

Also - This car is so low - bet they will have a heck of a time getting it on a flat bed. I am only 3 miles from home from here and 10 miles to the dealer from there. Think I will chance it.

My dealership would put mine in the show room when they had to hold it over night. I would take it to the dealership immediately and have it looked at. Park on a curb or something and take a look underneath yourself to see if anything looks out of place.

Last Fall I had a fit when I learned that my Shelby was sitting out back in the elements for a week. If anything happens to your car while parked at the dealership the dealership has no legal liability unless it is the direct result of actions by an employee. These are the exact words used by the Service Manager when I expressed how unhappy I was with the run around I was given. Sure the lot is secured and monitored but it doesn't take but a few seconds for nature or for someone to do something that results in damage to your car.

I hate to say it but this does not sound good, and is not the sticker on the drive shaft. When you say it didn't feel right when you tried to shift into third what did it feel like as this could be a clue.

What you describing sounds like the rear diff and gears, maybe the torsen diff??

 

I agree. It's a gear in the rear diff. I doubt it's in the carrier, it's static when going straight. It sounds like he/you chunked a gear or a bearing.

 

I'd be VERY worried about driving that car. Not for the damage you'll do to the diff, it's covered under warranty. I'd be worried about the damage to the rear of the car when the rear axle locks up and you get rear ended.

 

I've had a rear diff freeze up. It's not pretty. The rear wheels just *lock* tight and on the freeway, it's one hell of a ride. My case was a pinion nut that slowly came loose and let the pinion shaft back out into the diff. It was on my Aunt's Chevy pick-up truck.

There were a couple of guys on other forums that have had carrier bearing failures on their 2013 GT500's. No mention of if they were SVTPP cars.

 

Eck. That's not good but a carrier brng. won't generally give you the clunk and lock-up. Well, unless it spit a roller out and it jambed between the ring/pinion gears.

 

But they WILL howl like a big dog.

Well I think today was the day the car was going in to be checked at the dealer, maybe we will get some info on wed. as to the problem.

Imagine the noise caused by a wobbling ring gear as it erratically makes contact with the pinion gear? Not to mention the possible damage to the axle bearings now the carrier is no longer properly supported.

 

The carrier bearing (aka "Side bearing") would have to be completely gone for the ring gear to wobble. At least to the point of locking up and/or hurting the axle bearings.

 

If it were that far gone, there would be a whole lot more symptoms than a growl or whine.

I have had a casualty too. Popped my tire. New one going on tomorrow. Good thing I got tire warranty

 

They're going to warranty a popped tire? How did it pop?

 

I have a road hazard policy on my cars that will replace tires if i pop 'em but it's above/beyond the factory warranty.

Run-out and wobble are two different things.

 

"Wobble"? Enough slack that the carrier would wobble around free in the bearing races. Visible slack would be a parameter in my book.

 

"Run-out"? Anything over .000" is run-out.

 

Anything over about .002"-.004" is too much run-out.
