Bad day in Houston

Broad daylight 10:30 AM. Women walks toward her and car pulls up from behind. My wife started screaming "Get away from me!" but the woman took her purse anyway. Fortunately, my wife wasn't hurt. However, we lost the $50 in her wallet, we've had to stop checking account, Credit Cards, ATM cards, re-key all of our locks, stop the cell phone, and redo all the direct deposit information. Bummer.

My wifes instincts are good - she doused the thief with very hot coffee that she had just picked up. The girl didn't flinch so she was probably stoned. She also managed to get the license plate number.

It really has shaken her up but I'm just so thankful that she wasn't hurt. We can handle the rest of the stuff.

Bummer man, hope everything goes good.

If hot coffee didn't do anything, I bet they were on some kind of pain killer, or something

I'm glad your wife is ok. Money can be replaced, credit cards cancelled, but her health is most important.

One thing you might want to do - since they probably got her license, they can try to open new credit lines with it in your wifes name. Call all 3 credit bureaus and report a stolen identification. When someone checks her credit, they'll (hopefully) see it and deny new credit without more info.

Best of luck.

Joe G - Great idea. We're not talking about thief's who maximize their take, however. We already got the credit cards and license back. They go to a service station to see if the cards will work and if they do, they head to a jeweler or electronics or camera store. We got the cards stopped immediately ( apparently this is what the mall security is good at :banghead: ) so they dropped the credit cards and drivers license off at a Shell convenience store in a questionable part of town. I went to pick them up and I decided not to stop because I was in the new Mustang. I drove back home and swapped cars to our older 2002 Explorer and picked up a neighbor. The gas station didn't inspire confidence; it had a massive scissor grating/screen that covered the windows but at least was pulled back. Inside there were 2 drunks and the clerk stood behind bullet proof (I hope for his sake) glass. I identified myself and asked for my wifes cards back. I was handed all the cards back and one check that was made out to the B of A for $1500 and had a signature that was not my wifes and the amount line was filled out in a different ink and handwriting.

Unfortunately, the police are not being very vigorous in their investigation. Remember, my wife got the license plate and gave them the cell phone number. The cell phone was on and could have been triangulated. Was the gas station close to where the car is registered? I think it boils down to this doesn't make the police's radar screen. I guess it will when they actually hurt someone....

That sort of thing really angers me. Women are targets. It's happening everywhere.

Mark - real glad she's okay. Unfortunately, it will probably take her some time to feel safe again.

No comment about the police follow up attitude.

Yes - great idea - you can add to your report a "consumer statement". You can say you've been a theft victim - and ask that no credit be extended unless your're contacted directly. That can be a hassle for you at some point, since the same would apply to you. But for now - it could help give you peace of mind.

b17drvr - it was Deerbrook mall - we live in Kingwood

Thanks,

My dsughter is doing drivers ed at the Willowbrook Mall for the next 2 weeks and it does not have a great security reputation.

I will be escorting her into the Mall.

I think Deerbrook and Willowbrook are operated by the same company and their security stinks! My wife made all the way back into the book store where they had to call security. My wife had parked out in the clear just because of this risk (Rule 1: don't get pinned in). Hello video cameras? Oh yeah, you do have to WATCH them occasionally :banghead:

They are very good at helping you cancel your cards (lots of practice?)

You are definately doing the right thing by escorting her in.

Wow, sad to hear that but very happy your wife was not hurt and kept her wits about her. This is the reason why a few years back I quit carrying a purse with me to the mall or at night. Just stuff some $$ and a credit card in my pocket now.

That's awful moab...but glad no one got hurt.

My wife had a bad day today. She was walking up to some woman and the woman threw hot coffee on her and then threw her purse at her. At least we got $50 bucks out of the deal to pay my wife's medical bills.

:hysterical2:

Seriously though, glad no one got hurt and hopefully you get it all sorted out soon. Some people have no respect at all.

Kathy is doing really well. She did tell me that she's a little jumpy in parking lots now so we'll be doing a lot of shopping together for a while.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions - y'all are the best!

Mark - Kathy's experience just brings home a fear we all have. We watch the news and are desensitized by the amount of violence we face today. But for most of us - it's distant violence.

Kathy's event brings it home. We know you. We care about you. We care about Kathy. So - we get angry.

Please let her know her experience will probably help others on this forum in preventing a similar action against those we care about.

There is always the remote, distant possibility that I made said comments in order to watch the interesting replies that would ensue... But that's only a possibility.

It's too early to tell - but you just might fit in here. We like "...remote, distant possibilities.."!
