gap32514
I have a 2014 GT500 with the factory Michelin Pilots. Wanted to know if anyone else has tested the 200mph waters with the Pilots installed. Itching to see 200 just once.
Bill Hamilton
Seems like I read a few years ago that you're going to need about 17,000 feet of open straight road, cooler weather, and as close to sea level elevation as you can. LOL! I believe they're Y-Rated which is 186 mph. But that's a sustained speed, I'm sure a quick trip the other side of 200 would be okay. John Canfield
Tire speed ratings are set through testing at maximum load rating for a sustained 90 minute period, so what Bill said is sound.
Torched10
Did you see this http://www.fordgt500.com/forums#/topics/167338 I've done 185 on road Atlanta backstretch which is about a mile long with hard brake into corner.had z rated tires on a c6 Vette vert.if you, blow a tire at that speed you're dead,so I wouldn't push y rated over
Norton
MPSS (in stock sizes for our cars) are actually (Y) rated, meaning their good "in excess of 186MPH." FWIW, I've had mine over 160MPH many times and over 170MPH a couple of times, unsurprisingly, with no problems.
Torched10
I was wrong on 2 counts it was a c5 Vette.they were the highest speed rating tire but it was 145.they actually road tested the c5 at road Atlanta up to 195.so at the time I thought it was safe.so Norton's right. Y is the top rated speed tire.good luck. Ps. Looking at the video I posted some of the cars hit 220 in 1/2 mile race from standing start. So that's like 2500 ft

gap32514
Thanks for the replies. Bought the Shelby a few months back making me the 3rd owner and car has 27k miles, I thought that the tires had too much tread to be originals. Now that I look closer the tires are Michelin Pilot A3 sport and they are all "W" rated. Pretty disappointed they are not "Y" but it may for the best. Norton
Just clarifying... Y rated tires are good UP TO 186MPH, while (Y) rated tires are good IN EXCESS OF 186MPH. Norton
Norton. Thanks for post.just curious could the car have gone faster or did reason kick in. LOL! It could have gone faster with more distance, but that was its top-end in the standing mile at the time (stock power level and a DA of roughly 8100ft). I made 14 passes throughout that weekend, with trap speeds ranging from 165MPH to 170MPH. A friend with a 2014 running a 65mm TB, 3.73 gears, and a mild tune managed 173MPH. Another friend with a 2013 running a VMP Gen 2 S/C, 2.4" upper, 10% lower, suspension mods, and wider tires garnered a top speed of 178MPH. Unsurprisingly, heat dissipation and traction were the biggest problems we encountered. US Mile staff members, who also host the Texas Mile, estimated we'd see an additional 5-8MPH at lower altitude/DA. The two of us with 2013s have also done the Pikes Peak Airstrip Attack (1/2 mile drag racing) a few times. Our speeds there ranged from 153MPH to 160MPH (~25 passes in 3yrs) for me and 159MPH to 168MPH (~12 passes in 2yrs) for my friend. The bottom line is our results are relatively consistent, given varying DAs and track conditions. Unsurprisingly, most of our acceleration takes place below 150MPH, within the first 1/2 mile, after which additional speed comes pretty slowly. Torched10
Got it.till I read Norton's post I didn't realize acceleration slowed getting near 170.he was doing 1/2 mile. The extra half mile got c&d up to 190.humidity enters into it as well ie lower humidity, more oxygen available.still pretty fast car.
Norton
Read my original post - 17,000+ feet of straight track, cooler temps, and lower altitudes. Bill is spot-on. According to professional race driver Randy Pobst, who a couple of us talked with at the Colorado Mile, our cars "are 200MPH cars." (Watch this video, emphasis on the 11:00-12:00 min marks.) gap32514
Which of the Michelin Pilot tires gives the best traction? I'm only concerned with straight line acceleration and I don't drive my car in the rain. I'm assuming the AS3 Pilots are the hardest of the group since they have the highest wear ratings. Norton
Used to be Super Sports, but I believe their new Pilot Sport 4S is the new king of the Michelin hill.
gap32514
I was looking at the wear rating for all the pilots and the Sport 4S is the lowest at 180 while the Sport A/S 3 is a 500. That leads me to believe the 4S is the softest of the bunch.
Norton
A/S 3 are great (all-season) tires, but they're not in the same (performance) class with Super Sports or Sport 4S. Edited August 17, 2017 by Norton
Torched10
Agree with Norton.yes they do wear more but that's why your getting more traction.down side is if you live in colder climate the tires get hard like hockey pucks.I live in ATL and don't drive car when it gets below freezing.so the AS might be better choice as all season tire. gap32514
Just ordered a set of SuperSports for the rear. Will feel better having more grip when making those triple digit blasts. dr-frank-n-furter
I haven't heart about a single tire - factory or correct rated aftermarket - on a GT500 that has failed by going highspeed here in Germany. To low pressure or some debris on the road will kill the tires. If you want to go 200mph contact the tire manufacturer and ask for the correct tire pressure for this speed. Second - take care to have metal valve stems - rubber valve stems will break. My pulley tuned 2008 GT500 on E85 has a max speed at 180mph (GPS) - then aerodynamics win the game the 13-14 GT500 with pulley tune go beyond 190mph, but only a few have ever hit 200mph - you need a long road, cool weather, some balls,... Here are some numbers, from a friend of mine - 5 Miles Autobahn, no speed Limit - 2014 Convertible with Pulley tune (750hp), lowered, wider tires on the rear, etc. -> 329km/h = 204.4mph https://picload.org/view/rwlpapwr/speed.jpg.html hth Edited August 18, 2017 by dr-frank-n-furter

Norton
I had the new MPSS installed on the rear with 35# of air. While accelerating hard in 3rd the car felt wobbly in the back, never felt this with the AS3 tires. Too much air? Sounds like the so-called "death wobble," reported by some and not felt by others. Problem has been reported by owners of various vehicles (e.g., Ford, Chevy, and Dodge). No clear cause/reason/pattern.
