Why Buy Or Not Buy A 2014 Gt500 ?

Hi all, New to the forum and to Shelby all in all. Im a huge gear head and love anything car related. Due to some good fortune, luck, and some friends that are car dealers I've been able to own a lot of vehicles and play around with quite a few cars.

My current decision is i sold my 2013 Audi RS5 a couple of months back, It was my DD and while i loved the car.. it was dull. Didn't really make me feel how i would like to driving a car of that caliber. In comparison of my previous cars it was a dog with the low amount of torque it had.

Now I'm looking to grab something to fill the DD Void, I have a 2010 Platinum for work if i absolutely need it, but for the most part it sits at home and i drive whatever car il be buying 99% of the time.

Previously these cars have been my DDs,

- 2007 Z06

- 2012 GTR

-2009 911 Turbo

-2012 Z06

-2013 RS5

So as I'm looking at another GTR at a local dealer, out of the corner of my eye i see one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen. a 2014 Grey/Black Stripe GT500, being a huge Gone in 60 Seconds Fan boy i couldn't ask for a better color combo! I Test drove it and My god the thing kicks, more power than i could ask for. Complete opposite of the RS5. However i did notice in comparison to the other cars I've owned the Interior is Lacking quite a bit. Don't get me wrong the Z06 is horrific but this is not much better. Lots of plastic! :(

So i was hopping to get some feedback from the community, How is this car in the long run not just the test drive. Will the 2015 have an impact on the price or because its the last shelby will it matter ? Also if i plan on driving 15k Highway Miles a year is the maintenance not to bad besides Tires or...? Any input to sway me away/into buying it helps!

Also i have to say of all the cars I've owned (Besides the Lp560) the Z06s have been my favorite. Call me crazy but all the luxury and Dual Clutches in the world don't make me as excited as A standard American Muscle Car.

I have to say, if you're considering a GTR as a possible alternative to a GT500 you had better do some deep sole searching first. Those two cars are about as diametric opposites when it comes to driving as possible. If you LIKE to drive, the GT500 will be all you can handle and then some. Slap a few mods on it and it can be down right dangerous. Frankly, I think you'll be disappointed in comparison with some of the other cars you've owned. Having said that, I personally wouldn't trade you straight across for any them, and I've driven all but the RS5 (but I've driven the Gallardo/R8). I drive mine as a DD (17K miles so far), but it has significant suspension upgrades and I've been able to squeak out damn near a 1.0-1.1 g on the 200 ft. skid and I'm only pushing about 700bhp. Lots left on tap.

The 2015 will likely not hurt the 2013/14 cars, unless SVT unleashes such a beast as the entire world will have to take note. That's not Ford's style however. If history is our guide, it won't be until about 2023 that the likes of this year's model will be eclipsed. So, if its "A standard American Muscle Car" you're looking for... then look no further. Get one before they're gone. If you're looking for "refined" I'd say you'll probably be let down. Sales brochures drive me crazy.... I don't read them.

jabsvt,

Welcome to Team Shelby. I agree with Grabber. Go for it...

You've driven some well respected Euro cars and the highly rated computer controlled Godzilla.

Now it's time to put your foot on the skinny pedal of the 662hp "Powered by Ford" Shelby GT500. It is the absolute definition of "American Muscle".

This helps a lot! Like i said call me crazy but the PDK in the 911 and the GTRs transmission weren't fun cars to drive. They were luxurious and fast as hell but they were missing the connection to the car i was wanting. Out of all of the cars I've owned i would honestly say the 07 Z06 was by far my favorite. It wasn't the fastest and it wasn't the nicest. But to me it was the most fun, that thing always put a smile on my face. I had a grin Ear to Ear when i test drove the GT500, damn near made the sales guy shit himself when the back end stepped out at a U turn . Im just trying to make sure I'm not missing anything that il be thinking 2 months into ownership saying why did i buy this. Im leaning heavily towards it.

I still have the Gallardo in the gerage for the weekends if I'm really craving an E-Gear and a nice interior. I think the GT500 will be the perfect Yin to the Gallardos Yang.

Hopfully if i don't change my mind il be the new owner of a 2014 GT500 very soon!

I've read similar things from other RS5 owners who ended up trading in for 911, GTR, etc. I decided to save a few bucks and bought a 2014 S5 manual and had it APR tuned, it definitely offers the best of both worlds for fun and daily drive ability. I love my Shelby, greatest car I've ever driven let alone owned but I'm too paranoid to drive it ever day but go for it if you can, you will not be dissapointed.

Do it, before I bought my 13GT500 I test drove a 2012 GTR black edition and it was fun, than i test drove a 2011 C6Z and I really wasnt all that crazy about it, than I drove my Gt500 and fell in love, the car is such a beast in stock form than do some bolt ons and it becomes a monster.

First of all, you are absolutely correct. The interior of the GT500 is a definite downside. I've owned a number of cool cars in the past and that is my biggest gripe about the Shelby. Plastic, plastic and more plastic. I've replaced a lot with Carbon Fiber, but still surrounded by unappealing plastic. If you can get past that downside of the car (because that is where you'll be spending your time) then the GT500 is a fun car to own. With that said, you are definitely at polar opposite ends of the spectrum when considering a GTR vs. a GT500. Two entirely different cars with entirely different purposes. You need to decide what is most important to you from a driver's perspective and then choose the right car. The Z06 is a great car and has that American muscle feel, but it also handles very well. GT500's are pigs in comparison and built for one thing: Go like hell in a straight line. I've put tons of money into my car to make it handle like a proper sports car and if you want a GT500 to turn exceptionally well like the GTR or Z06 you will have to do the same. There is no way around it.

With the new 2015 Mustang coming out, I personally would wait and see what it feels like. There will be plenty of new and used GT500's out there so don't feel like this is the only one. My local dealer has two '14 cars he can't sell. Hope this helps.

From your line up of cars, What made you get rid of the GTR? If you answer this question truthfully, you will know if the GT500 is the car for you.

I didn't want to sell the GTR, I moved to Colorado for a year and the GTR wasent going to get destroyed in the mountains and snow. And leaving it in the gerage would have been a waste of money so I sold it. I loved the drivability of the car and off the line it was insane. However it lacked a certain connection that I felt with the Z. I love daily driving these cars, however with the number of miles I drive the GTR would kill me on maintenance and tires per year. The GT500 is cheap in comparison and a lot less "flashy" around clients. My friends dealer also has a 2011 ZR1 that may be an option as well. Haven't driven a ZR1 yet, power of the gt500 but nimble like the Z06. Hopefully il make up my mind soon! Thank u for all the input guys! Really helps!

Drove my buddy's 2011 ZR1 and the thing ran like a scalded cat. We never got to race, but I doubt my lightly modded 2008 GT500 could have touched him. That said, for the cost of the ZR1 I'd take my GT500 and put money in the bank. Even more so for a 2013/14 GT500.

All you guys complaining about plastics in the interior, what do you prefer? Wood? Metal?

Go sit in any new Corvette, Viper, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi etc. Immediately, you notice the difference. Much better than cheap plastic.

I can give you my 2 cents, since have owned a lot of these cars, dating back to 2008 till now 2014.

2008, bout an 08 zo6, and 08 gtr. 2 different cars. Zo6 was just balls out fun, the sound, the tranny, the car felt too connected. Was a bit raw and less refined, but u don't care at all because of the fun factor, and it was quite comfortable, altho the seats lacked a bit of support.

The GTR was insane on curves, and had the best stock sound system. But that's about all I liked. It was a little too numb for my taste and I ended up selling it to my brother after driving it 2k miles.

2009, bought the 09 viper, and it felt like a zo6 on steroids. Less refined, shittiest interior, but god damn the fun factor, unmatched by anything I have ever driven. Had to sell it when my kid turned 10 months. Miss it till today.

2012. bought a 12' Shelby, sold it after 4 months.......2012 December, bought another Shelby, sold it in 6 months. 2013 November, bought the 13' Shelby.

Now one might ask wtf why buy and sell the same car again and again ( ofc the 13' is a whole diff animal vs 12') the answer for me is simple.....its gives me a bit of all the cars I mentioned above plus 2 extra seats in the back. It might not be the best handler compared to the gtr but its damn good. it might not be as visceral as the viper but its almost as visceral and slightly more raw even than the zo6. What I love about the 13 besides the power hike ofc is the steering feel and suspension setup got better. The clutch feels the same, but the shifter got better too.

Buying a Shelby imo, is not about buying a car. Its about buying a luxury item. the luxury here being driving fun, driving feel and ofc, the addictive manual tranny, since most now pref the autos, with double clutches and pdks which are now as good or better in performance, but take away that connected feel to the road, imo.

Its not the most comfortable car, but its not too rough either, if you are looking for a car that does a bit of everything, Shelby is the way to go. If you are after a specialist in other departments, looks elsewhere.

These shelbys imo, will hold their value long term, since the newer ones are shifting focus and becoming a different genre of cars.

I guess this is a matter of preference. I may just be a cheap guy but the plastic doesn't bother me. I didn't buy my GT500 to feel like I was sitting in any of these cars. I understand the comparison though.

I wouldn't go so far as to say you're a cheap guy, because our cars are anything but cheap. Just pointing out that other cars in the same price range have an interior that justifies the price tag.

Maybe I'm just used to shitty interiors but I think the GT500 interior is awesome. Beautiful LED lighting, comfortable Recaro seats, easy to use navigation screen, adjustable steering, suspension, and launch controls from the steering wheel, shifter placement is good, no creeks or noises. I have no complaints.

None of the cars that are actually in the same price range have the same beast under the hood... Don't forget that the engine alone in a '13/14 is $31k. Sure, Ford skimped some on the interior with all the plastic, but that also kept the car affordable by using (mostly) stock parts from the rest of the mustang line. There's plenty of interior upgrade options available out there if it actually bothers you that much. Many of them don't even cost half the difference between a stock '14 GT500 and even a base model '14 Viper (let alone other options in the same performance category). Shelby (and the Mustang in general) have always been about affordable, comfortable performance.

I am a new guy here, just got my car two weeks ago. I have had some sharp cars over the years, starting with a 1986 Mustang SVO, sure wish I still had it! I think the 13\14 GT500 is going to be a car people will always remember, like the 69 Boss 429 or maybe even better. I have never had so many people give me thumbs up when they see it and the power the engine makes is crazy and so far the mileage is not that bad, if I can keep my foot out of it. For the price you can't touch the performance and sound. I had a 2014 C7 vette on order and my dealer screwed me over so I gave up, sure glad I did, now I have my Shelby in my garage! My vote is : GO FOR IT!

I have at least one opinion to put in on this lol.

My little v6 is ALL plastic. Game over. But, I still love it.

My Lincoln, its interior is nicer than most any new car I promise. I guess what I'm saying is I'd imagine as long as one can say they are comfortable with their interior then that is all that matters.

After reading a couple of other related threads... here are the cons:
