CLUTCH CHATTER

Recommended Posts

Hi all this is my first post. I have enjoyed reading all of the information that you all have offered up and found it very intriguing. The reason I am writing now is that I too have become the proud owner of an 07 Shelby GT 500. I bought it 6 days ago in Los Angeles. For those of you that are still waiting, the good news is that the prices are coming down. I paid $5000 over MSRP for mine.

Now the real meat of this post is this. The car has significant clutch chatter. I was once told my an old transmission specialist that you shouldn't have to drive around your clutch. In other words I shouldn't have to employ any special technique for a smooth launch. Well that is exactly what I have to do. I have tried using a little extra rpm to smooth it out which helps a little and I have tried engaging it at low rpm. Has any one else experienced this or do I have a problem.

The car had only six miles on it when I bought it and it was still a virgin( in other words the supercharger safety hadn't been breached yet). The car now has 550 miles on it and the cluch feel hasn't changed any.

Any puck ... ceranmic design thats more race oriented is going to make chatter

I expierenced this 10 years ago when I had a supercharged SHO and had Rochester Clutch make me a $1400 there cost ... disc and pressure plate for the car.

It was a puck design and did it ever chatter. Much worse then the shelby. YES ... it takes a bit of getting use to but that is normal

I have had mine for 3 days and it is doing the same thing. I have read this is perfectly normal. Also, on mine I have a "hiss" when I engage the clutch in first gear (if I am in my garage with the windows down, I hear it well). This is also supposed to be perfectly normal.

That is a HOT price you got IMO.. I bought mine two days ago for 10K over and I thought I got a pretty good deal.. Grats!

Noises That May Be Experienced By The Customer That Are Considered Characteristic

1) Roll Over Noise

SOME 2007MY GT500 MUSTANGS WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION MAY EXHIBIT A LIGHT 'GEAR ROLLOVER' NOISE WHILE THE CLUTCH IS ENGAGED AND THE TRANSMISSION IS IN NEUTRAL. GEAR ROLLOVER NOISE IS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC UNDER THESE CONDITIONS. IF THE NOISE IS BELIEVED TO BE ABNORMALLY LOUD, PLEASE COMPARE TO A LIKE UNIT BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY REPAIR. REFER TO WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 308 FOR ADDITIONAL MANUAL TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION.

2) Gear Rattle

SOME 2007MY GT500 MUSTANGS EQUIPPED WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION MAY EXHIBIT A 'GEAR RATTLE' NOISE FROM THE DRIVELINE DURING 1ST & 2ND GEAR SLOW OR GRADUAL LAUNCH OF THE VEHICLE. THE GEAR RATTLE NOISE IS ONLY PRESENT IN 1ST & 2ND GEARS AND IS CONSIDERED A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC CAUSED BY CONTACT PATTERN. THE GEAR RATTLE NOISE HAS NO EFFECT ON THE PERFORMANCE OR DURABILITY OF THE VEHICLE. RECOMMEND COMPARISON TO A LIKE UNIT. IF THE SYMPTOM IS EXCESSIVE COMPARED TO A LIKE UNIT, FOLLOW NORMAL WORKSHOP PROCEDURES TO FURTHER DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE.

3) Clutch Chatter at Launch:

SOME 2007MY GT500 MUSTANGS EQUIPPED WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION MAY EXHIBIT A 'CLUTCH CHATTER' DURING INITIAL LAUNCH OF THE VEHICLE. THE CLUTCH CHATTER MAY BE PRESENT IN 1ST AND REVERSE GEARS AND IS CONSIDERED A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC CAUSED BY THE CERAMETALIC CLUTCH LINING. THE CLUTCH CHATTER HAS NO EFFECT ON THE PERFORMANCE OR DURABILITY OF THE VEHICLE. RECOMMEND COMPARISON TO A LIKE UNIT. IF THE SYMPTOM IS EXCESSIVE COMPARED TO A LIKE UNIT, FOLLOW NORMAL WORKSHOP PROCEDURES TO FURTHER DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE.

4) Clutch Hiss during initial engagement of Cerametalic Clutch:

SOME 2007MY GT500 MUSTANGS EQUIPPED WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION MAY EXHIBIT A 'CLUTCH HISS' NOISE FROM THE DRIVELINE DURING CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT. THE CLUTCH HISS NOISE IS MOST NOTICEABLE DURING INITIAL ENGAGEMENT OF THE CLUTCH INTO 1ST AND/OR REVERSE GEARS AND IS CONSIDERED A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC CAUSED BY THE CERAMETALIC CLUTCH LINING CONTACTING THE PRESSURE PLATE AND FLY WHEEL METAL SURFACES. THE CLUTCH HISS NOISE HAS NO EFFECT ON THE PERFORMANCE OR DURABILITY OF THE CLUTCH OR TRANSMISSION. RECOMMEND COMPARISON TO A LIKE UNIT. IF THE SYMPTOM IS EXCESSIVE COMPARED TO A LIKE UNIT, FOLLOW NORMAL WORKSHOP PROCEDURES TO FURTHER DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE.

Yo Mustang5, congrats on your new Shelby. You are in for some awesome driving experiences.

On the clutch chatter, for what it's worth, I had the chatter in first and reverse when I first got it. I now have approx 350 miles on it and the chatter seems to have abated, much smoother on the launch now. I've not had the hiss noise that some others have reported.

Shelbydude,

Good form!

You are a very helpful and appreciated member of this site. I am glad you found us. :)

Thanks Grabber. Just glad to be of some help.

The only thing I see wrong with what Ford says about any of those issues stated above.......is where they say to compare to a like vehicle. Yeah, right! Like all the service departments will just happen to have other Shelby's sitting around to compare it to!!!! :hysterical:

That is a super deal being in CA. That market has some of the highest ADM's.

What dealer did you get it at? Do they have any others? There are a few here looking for one in that market.

Hi ShelbyDude, thank you so much for the information. I totally love the car and can't get over the great performance. I guess if a little clutch chatter is the price of having a high performance clutch I'll have to live with it. The main problem I have with it though, is that I want to show case what a great car it is, and to me the clutch chatter is some what embarrasing. Every other aspect of the driving experience is so top notch. I hope with time it will get better and not worse.

Any way on another topic I found the car on E-Bay. It showed up last Thursday with a buy it now price of $50000. When I saw that I almost had a heart attack. I immediately bid on it and then called the dealer to arrange the transaction. The dealership is Cerritos Ford Lincoln Mercury in Cerritos, CA. The salesman said that they received so many enquires at that price that they are going to mark up there next car $10-12 over sticker. There is another dealership in the same area Ford West in Bellflower,CA that has had the same car: white with blue stripes on E-Bay several times and no one has hit the reserve yet. Although it has a buy it now price of $59k, my gut feeling is they might take $8-10k over MSRP.

Thanks again for the info

Hi Black Venom, you can feel good about paying $10 over. If you look at other cars that have this kind of performance and cost less then $70 thousand they are very few to be had. I will say though after tracking prices on E-Bay daily for 5 months, the price trend is definately downward. Starting with the announcement of the Shelby GT 500KR the prices have been heading south. The average price of cars selling on E-Bay 10 weeks ago was about $60000 now it is between $53000 and $55000. Any way thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only one out there with cluch chatter.

Thanks phillycrashman. I though mine was getting better to, but I think I'm just learning to drive it more smoothly.

Enjoy your car

Over 5000 miles now and clutch chatter is about non existant, I don't know if I just got use to HOW to drive it, or if it has worn in and dissappeared.

To hear the hissing, drive up close to a curb or building, roll down the drivers window, put it IN gear, and let the clutch in and out slowly...you should hear the hissing...it is cool! ...doesn't happen out of gear.

Mine hisses too. I can hear it when I back out of the shop. I hardley ever get a chatter and I have 825 miles on mine. I think you guys just need to get use to driving this style clutch. I have not had a problem with mine from day one !

Great explanation ShelbyDude

Try less RPM and less time releasing the clutch

I have found with adjustments in technique I get nice smooth transition to roll, regardless of how hard I want to launch. I also think some are mistaking this chatter for wheel hop. As far as this being a special technique, don't you have to adjust your technique for any clutched car? I think it’s just how to drive the car Just MO

Hi Super Snake, thanks for your thoughts. It's funny that you would say that some people were mistaking chatter for wheel hop. My car doesn't seem to have any wheel hope and after reading all the posts about wheel hop I was wondering if some of the guys were mistaking wheel hope for chatter. Any way this is definately clutch chatter. In fact the car that I'm replacing is a 98 Cobra and it has a Ford Motorsport 11" clutch/fly wheel upgrade. Even with 35000 miles on that clutch it is smoother and easier to use then the GT 500's. I can certainly see that with a little practice I will be able to tame a lot of the chatter. I just wasn't expecting it in a new car of this caliber.

I can tell you that changing out those 3.31 rear gears for a set of 4.10s will make the clutch MUCH easier to live with and drive smoothly. Especially backing and in parking lots.

Not to mention the extra ZIP......:-)

I know there has been a lot of discussion regarding what gears to go to. You certainly sound happy with the 4.10's. Just out of curiousity, about how fast can you go in 1st and 2nd gear at redline? Also are the 4.10 gears louder then the 3.31's?

We drive one of the premier musclecars on the road today, rated at 500 hp and symbolized by a snake. It hisses. I see nothing out of the ordinary here.

My favorite thing about my '69 Camaro is how heat comes up through the shifter boot off the engine....it's the little quirks that make them special....just like our wives. :fan:

Congrats on the Shelby, Mustang5. You're gonna love it.

I LOVE the hissing!!! It lets others know that the snake inside will jump up and bite them in the ass if provoked! Too bad my 96 Cobra doesn't hiss. :( It also has one of the FRPP King Cobra clutches...and the chatter. My Shelby has the chatter also, and I know how you feel when you say its embarrassing. I felt that way too when it first happened in front of a bunch of people. But the other guys are dead on....this is a high powered muscle car. And anyone who doesn't realize that probably doesn't know what it is in the first place...and their opinion doesn't matter anyway (like my mother-in-law).

Enjoy the beast!

Don't have specific speeds for the gear shift points but the 1/2 shift comes quick. The FORD 4.10s, properly installed will be as silent as your 3.31s. Mine are. Yes, I am very happy witht the 4.10s for everyday driving. I do use my Shelby to commute to work when the weather allows. Which is most of the time here in Houston.

Hi, you have great taste in cars. The car that I'm replacing with the Shelby is a 98' Cobra. About 4 years ago I also replaced the stock clutch in that with the FRPP King Cobra. It chattered so bad I figured it must be defective, unfortunately no one told me otherwise so I replaced it with the 11" upgrade. That luckly is still going strong and even after 30000 hard miles. Any way I am learning to drive the Shelby better everyday and I have just about done away with the chatter. By the way, do we happen to have the same Mother-In-Law?
