CHEVY2SHELBY
Hey guys, I just had my oil changed and when I checked the rear diff fluid the colouring was fine but there was a bit of metal shavings in there. Ive only got 26,000 miles on it. Is that normal for a change already?
Larry T
No it isn't ... but those may be some hard miles Here is the maintenance booklet http://owner.ford.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Owner/Page/OwnerGuidePage&year=2006&make=Ford&model=Mustang But if you are concerned, change it, better safe then sorry. 07SGT
I would document with your Ford Dealer asap. Have the fluid and shavings analyzed and have the clearances for the ring and pinion checked immediately.
Steve.Madrid
Great question, my '08 has 16,500 right now and I am planning on changing all the fluids (rear diff, brake, radiator, transmission and of course engine) at 20K. I plan on switching everything over to Royal Purple products. Yes, I know everyone has a preference and I like RP. Been using it in the engine since 8,000 miles. So when draining, should I drain it through some sort of paper strainer to check for shavings? Should I keep a portion of the fluid for analysis? If so, how much? Thanks in advance for the info. CHEVY2SHELBY
Would it make any difference if i upgraded to 3.73 or 4.10 rear end or would the clearance on the ring and pinion still have to be checked
07SGT
If you are installing a new ring and a new pinion the clearances would have to be set when installed. I would just make sure that all the metal shavings are removed. You might want to see if there is a warranty for the new products if installed by a Ford dealer. Is there any reason the old ring and pinion might have been damaged or the angle changed?
