SHELBY SPRING FLING

Man this will be a cool event. I wish I could go but it would be a stretch (7 hours each way). Dave you may have to take my buckeye for me so I can be represented in some fashion:)

I had the buckeye in my trunk the entire time. It helped me win first place in my class on the Road Rally event!!! Of course there was only one entry in my class....but what the heck. :hysterical:

We went to the Spring Fling today and saw alot of cool cars, they had the 07 GT500's all in one area and they looked good, we talked to ATI for a few minutes and got see Alloy Dave's car as well. The weather was absolutely perfect and all of those Shelby's put a certain magic in the air.

Stent

Sorry I missed you. I was off serving chili. :hysterical2:

They told me someone was looking for me...so I hid in the woods. :hysterical:

Just kidding stent...sorry we couldn't hook up.

Below are some early photos of the event. Towards the end of the show there were 15 2007 GT500 and ~5 Shelby GT's. Of course there were countless early model Shelby's, 2 original AC cobras, several cobra replicas, 2 Panteras, 5 Sunbeam Tigers, 2 Ford GT's, and nearly every year of mustangs represented. I heard 268 cars in total.

It was a very nice show hosted by the Indiana SAAC (Excellent job) As stentgraft95 said, the weather was perfect-- 75 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. The setting in Brown County State Park offered lots of shade if needed.

Can you tell which one is the clone? (Hint: think black)

Original grabber orange

Another proud owner who was very protective of his engine bay

It was pleasure meeting ATI and Alloy Dave.

Nice meeting you too Kevin. Oh snap, RUF's gonna comment on my legs again. :hysterical2:

Pics pics pics.

On the last couple pics, you'll note the wheels. I'd never seen these before, so I asked about them. He said he bought them from a company called Paradyne or Panadyne or something like that, but they've since gone out of business.

Anyone know what one of those Sunbeam Tigers weighs? They are like a Falcon on a diet.

More pics later.

Edit: stopped at 131-3154 (code for me to know which pics I've posted)

We had a great time. Alan (ati) came in first place in our class :woot: congratulations Alan!

Alan's wife was very nice, my wife Terry had a good time talking with her. We did have one "oddball" in the group of GT500s. :hysterical: I'm sure everyone who was there knows which car I mean. :hysterical2:

I learned a lot about '67 vs. '68 GT500s...as one guy talked my ear off. Some story on the early cars about the fog lights headlights being in the middle (he about killed me for calling those lights in the middle "fog lights" :finger: , but some gov't agency (DOT?) said they were dangerous, so they made them move the fog head lights outboard. Then he said his car didn't have the correct "fine" metalflake paint, his had coarse. I needed one of you guys to call my cell phone so I could get away before he ended up telling me about how you could tell a fake fiberglass Shelby hood because the fiberglass strands were smoother on the new ones than they could produce back in the day. I learned all this just because I asked him what time it was. :hysterical2:

A lot of nice people though, great weather, and good fun.

Hello Everyone,

I would have posted sooner but after the long trip home I decided to debug the Shelby, give her a bath and put her to bed.

It was sure nice to put a face with a name after all these months.

It was great meeting:

Dave and his wife Terry (Alloy Dave)

Kevin (69 Deluxe)

Gregg (stentgraft95)

I only talked with Stent briefly but I hung out most of the day with Dave, Terry and Kevin, Except when Dave, Terry & my wife Lisa left to go cook chili.

Lisa and I enjoyed meeting all of you.

We hope to meet up with you all again real soon.

Her are a few more pics.

Alan

Thanks to all for posting some great pics. Man that looks like a fantastic bunch of cars (and SU members too). I would love to have been there but had to do the soccer tournament with my daughter in Lexington, KY. BTW, I didn't see any 07 Vista Blues in the crowd?

Anyone know what one of those Sunbeam Tigers weighs? They are like a Falcon on a diet.

I asked this very question to one of the owners and he said ~2700lbs. I didn't know anything about these cars until about 2 years ago. There's a rich Shelby history linked to these also.

I wanted to give a synopsis of the Spring Fling weekend from my perspective.

It was my first ever all Ford event. There were mostly Mustangs, but also Tigers, AC Cobras, and a few oddball cars. I got a chance to really see what I've been missing the past 20 years or so. I've come to the conclusion that I really like the looks of the early 2000s Mach I cars...in red with black trim preferably. I also learned some things about the early GT350s and 500s. I got chastized for suggesting that a replica Cobra was a kit car....they don't like that. I learned about the South African operation that builds the Cobras and ships them (sans engine) to the US. I learned some color names...for instance, I like Dark Ivy Green.

Let me give the chronological happenings.

Friday morning Terry and I showed up at 9 am for the Pony Trails...a drive that reminded me a lot of the drive from St. Louis to Hermann...just a caravan of 105 Fords through the rolling country in Indiana. We were running down SR 37 about 65 mph when two of the "Fang" cars (Fang is a Mustang modification company) roared past doing over 100. About 2 minutes later we noticed a HUGE cloud of blue smoke in the road. Cars were dodging through it like a Nascar race, and a few even went off the road. I thought I was going to see a bunch of carnage...but as I slowed down to 30 mph and approached, all the cars that were off the road drove back on and continued. I was wondering "WTF was that?". (more on that later).

We then stopped in Bloomington for a 2 hour lunch and a black late '60s convertible won an award (the county commissioner picked her favorite Mustang :hysterical: ). Then we headed back to Nashville Indiana. There was a break in the action between 3-7 pm, so Terry and I returned home to let our goat dog out and feed her....then it was back to Nashville (25 minute drive).

At 7 pm was the "Welcoming bash"...cash bar and hors' doevres (sp?). We got to meet some nice people, and then I noticed some guy looking at me and saying "are you Dave?". It was ati (Alan). We chatted for awhile, then resumed the party as they handed out door prizes. My wife won a black CD holder with red trim....a perfect match for my car...so she gave it to me  She also won a snake keychain, but I already have a different one...so that one will become a piece of artwork some day in my woodshop. We slept well that night after a long day.

Saturday was the car show, and I volunteered to serve chili to 512 people :drop: I then had to rush to see all the cars, which left me precious little time to talk with ati and 69deluxe  They probably thought I didn't like them, but I just wanted to see all the cars!

Saturday night was the awards banquet, at which they ran out of several food items and some people got so upset they made an announcement that anyone who felt unhappy with their meal would get a refund. :fan: Alan won 1st place in our class (I think 11 cars in our class). We slept well Saturday night too.

Sunday Terry and I returned for the road rally, which was ok...but I probably wouldn't do it again. They space the cars out about 2 minutes each, give them a set of directions, and you have to answer little clues and try to find your way around. It was funny seeing all the other Mustangs going down roads and saying "He's going the wrong way, I'm not following that bonehead" :hysterical: We got first place in our class, but that wasn't much of an accomplishment since we were the ONLY car in our class. :fan:

The day ended about 1 pm and we drove home and were exhausted. It was a great time, I got to meet several very nice people, and see lots of cars.

Oh, and the story on the Fang car....I "interviewed" a car that was right behind them when it happened. They said he was humping past them at a "high rate of speed at high rpm" when all of a sudden a huge cloud of smoke appeared. I asked where it came from and they said the TAILPIPE. I then caught up with the guy who was driving the car at the awards bash Saturday night. I asked him what happened. He said was cruising along in 4th gear about 80 mph and something went "boom" :fan: He put the clutch in and COASTED 1.8 MILES to a gas station....which explains why I didn't see any carnage. I chuckled and said "If you coasted 1.8 miles, you were going more than 80 mph...to which he grinned. He said he opened the hood and didn't see any mess. They later found out that an internal passage or line somewhere in one of the turbos broke and one of the turbos (it was a dual turbocharged 4.6L) got a dose of 30+ psi oil. :fan: The swapped out the turbo and it was running again later that day! He said the noise was so loud they were going to pull the engine apart anyway next week to check it all out.

Lastly, I wanted to say a special thanks to my wife. She doesn't read the forum, so she'll never see this...but at least you'll all know how much I appreciate her. She spent 3 FULL DAYS with me and a bunch of Mustang nuts and was a complete trooper. She was my Co-pilot during the road rally...yelling out directions and all. She gave me the prizes she won at the banquet. She helped me clean the car at the show. She served hot dogs while I was serving chili. She was just a joy to be with. And here's the real point....Friday the 18th was our 11th wedding anniversary and she allowed the delay of any special plans until the following weekend so we could be at this event. I have a special weekend planned for us coming up...so we'll be celebrating at that time.

I as 34 when we got married. She is older than I am (she won't let me tell her age :finger: ) and it was the first marriage for both of us. We dated for 3 years before getting married, and I'm very lucky I have her. I hope some of you get to meet her some day.

Nice tribute to the wife Dave. My wife has been a real trooper as well, putting up with my antics of modding a 50K + new 500HP car just to shave a second or so off the 1/4. She is a keeper for sure! Now go buy those Nittos!

Remember how in Hermann the alloy car (mine) was in front of the "pyramid" of cars? Well, I led the pack again at the Spring Fling. Proving once and for all....that Alloy is the fastest. :hysterical: This is the line to get staged for the show on Saturday morning...and yes...I was in front (only because a friend let me park in front of him :superhero: )post-3382-1179975662_thumb.jpg

And here's an ebony GT500 that had stage II and Cervinis scoops. The scoops looked very nice, I really liked the real aluminum mesh grills.

During the Spring Fling, we were given these small laminated Mustang trading cards as an ice breaker (the idea was to trade them to meet new people). On the back of one, there is a letter written from Carroll Shelby to Joyce and Steve Yates, who have been longstanding members of the Indiana Region Shelby Club (they may have even founded it, I'm not sure). I should note that this was my first Spring Fling, so there is a lot I don't know about the region. However, I did learn that evidently Steve Yates passed away quite some time ago...I think over 10 years ago. I met Joyce, and she is still very involved in the club, and owns a Mustang (perhaps more than one...but I saw her driving a dark green '68 fastback)....not sure of the details but I gathered from conversations that show owns a very rare car...but I'm not certain if that rare car was the one she was driving, or perhaps one she did not bring to the show.

On the front of the card is a fuzzy picture of a Cobra... CSX2540 (not sure what that signifies...someone help out). I'll retype the memo below exactly as it appears, as I wanted to share this with many of you, who I know would appreciate the way Carroll's words live on. Note the date:

May 15th, 1987

Dear Joyce and Steve,

On the occasion of the Indiana Region's 10th anniversary I would like to take the opportunity to personally thank the both of you for everything you have done to keep what has become the legend of these cars alive. I know of your continued involvement both within your region and the national club as well as the work you both have done to establish and maintain the club's concours judging standards. To be honest, that was something we never thought about back when we were building Cobras, GT-350s, and GT-500s. I doubt if very many cars, as they came off our assembly lines, would win any trophies at today's shows.

The continued enthusiasm you have both shown is an inspiration to everyone who has a special feeling for these cars, our cars. Here's hoping tha the next ten years will be as rewarding and enjoyable for you as the past ten have been.

Kindest personal regards,

Carroll Shelby

More pics. The light blue car was a custom color called Bombay Blue, and I really liked it. THe little garage was a guy who made those out of small craft wood and would put any car(s) in them you liked. They ranged from simple 1 car units for $45 all the way to 3-car garages with lighting for $375. Very detailed. The white cobra was the only "original" one at the show.
