This is a screaming deal.

Mine went out as well as Msmap in Houston and it was considerably more expensive than this for an OEM that you cannot get new, reconditioned only.

Actually, in most cases where the factory is selling "reconditioned" parts, they're brand new. And not just on electronic parts. I've seen water pumps sold as "reconditioned" that were brand new parts (and ECM's/PCU's, and, alternators, and, and, and......).

They sell them as reconditioned so they can charge you a core charge. That encourges you to return the old unit to *them*. They want the old units so they can keep them out of the hands of rebuilders, who will rebuild them and create a market for less expensive units (driving the prices of new units down). It's a ploy to keep the price of new parts, up. And it works for the first few years (and many times, well beyond).

What's the difference vs. Ford OEM stock alternator?

I had just about the same question: What is the stock alternator amperage output rating?

Will this work on a 2006-2008 Shelby GT or GT-H ?,4.6 motor ,,or is their any plans to have one make by Shelby Parts .

Will not work on a 4.6L. Yes, we are going to make them avail. to those engines too.

The stock alternator is 110 amps

Correct.

Why is the stock unit not enough?

Are failures due to additional load like large stereo amps?

Larger stereos, electric fans, bigger i.c. cooler pumps. . .

It's not that they will *fail* from additional load, it's that they can't keep up with the additional demand and your battery will not get charged sufficiently.

Once a car starts, the Alternator is what powers all the accessories and recharges the battery (which drains from parisitic loads and starter useage). The *battery* only needs to be a large enough capacity to crank the engine over and power the ROM and other memory chips in the car (Radio, clock, etc.).

To calculate your Alternator rating you turn on ALL power accessories and note the Amperage draw. Add the Starter draw to that number then add 15% to give you some leeway.

If you put a big bumpin' stereo on a car and crank it up, you will see your headlamps dim with each "thump". That is a sign your alternator is insufficent....AND, you need to add a big capaciter to stop the voltage pulses created by the stereo demand.

A larger rated Alternator is a MUST if you run a lot of, or a single LARGE draw electrical/electronic device, such as a stereo/amp, larger/more cooling fans, large cap IC pump, etc. etc. etc.

The more you use, the more you need (i.e. "supply/demand").

If your car is stock or close to it, you'll gain nothing by adding a lager capacity Alternator. You can have a 500Ma Alternator (no such thing, just sayin') buf if all you use is 80a MAX, it's wasted.

Robert,

I see this is listed for '07-'09 model years. I just went through this with PA Performance, another aftermarket alternator/starter supplier, that the '07-'08 alternators are different then the '09 and they are not interchangeable. '07-'08 use a Ford alternator and the '09 use a Nippondenso unit. If one tries to use an earlier Ford in an '09 the battery light on the dash will stay on.

Does any of this hold true for your unit?

  • 3 weeks later...

I just got the 200amp alternator and the installation was going well until I realized the upgraded 48" power cable is way too short. My understanding is the new power wire should run along side the original wire back to the battery, but it's about 18 inches too short. So much for the drive I had planned on this beautiful California afternoon :(

Any suggestions short of calling SA tomorrow?

Great question.

Are you running the stock under pulley damper?

Where can we get a chromed unit for the '09's?

You don't want a Chrome alternator. See Robert's reply for the "why not".

Take it apart and have the body polished. That'll last, won't peel and won't retain heat like Chrome will.

Any good polishing shop can do it or if you have TONS of patience, you can do it.
