It would be very curious to monitor the radiation levels in the coming days there, just to see if the gov't. is telling all of us the truth? EDIT- after all, an electronic device won't lie! socalwrench
No. I haven't purchased any device to measure the radiation. If someone wants to send me one, I'll start taking notes.

SVT NAJA
I don't want to downplay the hazard that exists at the damaged Japanese nuclear faciltiy, but here is an interesting article that will put this current situation somewhat in perspectitive. http://www.msnbc.msn...ific/?GT1=43001 In my line of work, I have had occasion to enter containment at numerous nuclear generating stations situated around the country. Plant owners, workers and contractors are VERY diligent about radiation exposure and contamination and practice what is referred to as ALARA http://www.ncsu.edu/...forms/alara.pdf. Whole body counts are routine for personnel and the results are entered in a database as one of many quality control mechanisms to ensure plant systems are functioning and effective. I can tell you that radiation exposure is much greater for "sun worshippers" on the beach than what your typical nuclear plant worker is exposed to on a daily basis for the same period of time (ask any Dermatoligist in Florida or SoCal). Yeah, the damaged Japanese plants are toast and will be decommissioned when this event ends. Could their backup UPS have been more robust, absolutely! Plant owners and governments around the world have taken notice and will respond with measures to harden their backup systems so reactors can be shutdown in a controlled manner following a similar "catastrophe". But really, when this facility was built in the late 1960's, given our knowledge of plate techtonics and subduction zones at the time, who would have EVER considered a credible estimate of a 9.0 earthquake occurring??? No one. Lastly, more Russian sailors have died from faulty submarine reactors over the years than personnel responding to the Chernobyl http://www.world-nuc...obyl/inf07.html reactor failure (which might be 50 or so to date). TMI in Pa was zero, nada. Given these handful of deaths versus the hundreds of thousands from things we CAN personally control (lung cancer from smoking http://www.jointoget...ie-in-2010.html, heart disease from cholesterol http://www.reuters.c...E6103EN20100201, deaths from not wearing seatbelts http://articles.cnn....es?_s=PM:TRAVEL), the current reaction from the public concerning radiation from nuclear reactors borders on hysteria. Again, I don't want to downplay the current situation, but let's keep it in perspective. I do wish and hope that these workers efforts to control the plant damage are successful. Stay tuned, we'll soon find out.
mrfarmdog
I do not want to profess myself as an expert but I am certainly educated on the topic due to spending 13 years in the industry. This is my personal opinion but this is bad. Very bad. They have breached primary containments and a meltdown occuring in at least one plant and there is risk that it will get much worse due to the amount of spent fuel in the immediate area. The high radiation levels and contamination are proof. Also the drastic measures they are taking to try to cool it (i.e. helicopters dropping water on the buildings, injecting salt water into the plant, etc). These are all last ditch efforts to try to contain or minimize what is already a horrible situation. More proof is the measures they have taken to shelter the public and evacuate. There is an excellent documentary on Nova on Chernobyl (also second called Return to Chernobyl) that will provide a good perspective. We should all prey that the wind stays off shore because the radioactive plume needs to stay away from people. If it shifts towards major population centers and the radioactive release gets worse then you could have millions of people exposed to high levels of radioactive contamination. BIKEBOY
Unfortunately I am not savvy enough to embed vids here on the forum...I am the ultimate computer geek! However, I just saw an ABC News vid on my Yahoo page that shows a diving team's discovery in the eastern Pacific ocean off the Japan coastline. It reveals a frightening sight of essentialy a buried entire city. On the bottom of the ocean they have found ALL KINDS of things that are personal posessions of lots and lots of people that were just washed back out into the sea...potentially miles away from the coastline! It was disturbing,,,they found very calmly laying there, pictures of people's loved ones, cars and trucks, 'whole' houses that were wiped off of their foundations and swept back out to sea. There is simply no knowing of what might be out there? On a side note...I heard soon after the tsunami had struck, that scientists are expecting that the western coastline of the US should begin seeing Japanese debris washing up on shore within the next year or so. Bodies, car parts, personal posessions, etc... Today, oddly the media has said that the Japanese officials have now constituted four new areas as "Off Limits' due to radiation fallout. This really has become one of, if not the worst tragedy of our living time.
