Im in oklahoma...so its a no go for me. Any suggestion on a reliable radar detector that is legal in my state?

jammers are illegal, but detctors are fine in Ok--heres a link http://www.1stradardetectors.com/radar-detector-laws.php

I really like the Passport 9500ix--- superior low false alaerms and has very good range as well. Its not cheap but i like it. These things last forvever too--my last pasport still works after 12 years, and my Valentine is also 12 years old.Id be leery of buying any used ones of ebay et al, if they do break,or even a cable goes bad, Passport wont repair if youre not the original owner, at least that was my exprience when i left my cable in a reantal car and needed a new one

Need to follow a "rabbit"

Valentine 1 works great, for all warnings.

Passport 9500ix is a good unit too.

Jammers, doing a 100 and the police don't read a signal probably they will be pulling you over and looking at your car.

I believe radar jammers federal crime, laser jammers aren't. Some states don't allow detectors, just use them wisely.

Depends on what kind of driving you do. I have a Valentine1, Escort Redline and Escort 9500IX.

The 9500ix is good for city and hwy. 9500i/ix is a totally different breed of radar detector and certainly is in the top 3 if not #1. I have done some pretty extensive testing on the 9500 series and find it to be very impressive. The features are truly awesome, and they are what makes the 9500I/ix a top notch choice. From GPS & speed sensitive filtering, Marking of speed traps and redlight camera's, to the USB that you can update .

The 9500i/ix at times is so quiet it's as if the 9500I/ix knows the difference between a real threat and a false alert. Its amazing quietness when driving through towns or through cities and suburbs, insure virtually every alert is real. The key point of the 9500 is knowing that ~9 times out of ~10 a 9500i/ix alert is real means that you will pay attention and react to the alert appropriately and immediately.

The V1 and Redline are about equal and are good for mostly hwy/interstate driving and have a long range but will give a bit more falses but will definitely let you know way ahead of time if you're been painted. The Valentine1 will show you the direction of the radar, front, side, rear by arrows and how many radars are being used and the Redline may have just a hair longer warning distance.

As far as jammers, here's a list of states where they are illegal.

I have "a little bit of experience" in this field and I will tell you with all honesty intended, detectors of just about ALL sorts are worthless. If a Police Officer is sitting on the side of the road with his radar running continuously, chances are he or she is not actively pursuing speeders. I know this sounds contradicting, but trust me when I say it, it's the truth. All radar units give the operator the ability to place the unit on stand by which at that point, takes one click of a button to instantly produce a signal and bounce it off its target. If an Officer is actively trying to pursue speeders, he or she would be sitting with the unit on stand by which would not be detected by any detector. He will then use experience and common sense to actively target and gauge specific cars on approach or retreat. If your running a detector and your the target, by the time your detector goes off and you react, the Officer already has your speed and your basically a cooked goose. Bottom line, detector or not, if the officer is a skilled and determined operator, your going to get caught and your going to get a ticket. :salute:

I know for some its hard to believe, but most "non-highway patrol" or traffic officers don't exactly enjoy or have the patience for active speed enforcement and radar posting and honestly do "have better things to do." However, that doesn't relieve them from performing and satisfying active orders, directives and their duty to enforce traffic laws. Now contrary to popular belief, ticket quotas are completely illegal and would be instantly refuted by Police Unions before the citizens of the jurisdiction even knew it happened, but ordering specific time frames of "radar or speed enforcement" is completely legal and very common. All that order requires is that the Officer sit someplace where speeding is reported as an issue and have his radar active to at the very least, deter the act and be in view to show presence. This guy, you'll probably get a reading on from your detector and have a little bit more time to react to it before your completely hosed, BUT if your going faster than 20 or 30 MPH over the limit, your going to get burned anyway because of officer experience and the training that they receive in speed determination and something called Doppler Shift in decelerating or accelerating targets. In many cases, these officers are doing two things at once (regardless of what the other task is) and the radar operation is the second of the priority list, otherwise they wouldn't have them running continuously, they'd be targeting and activating momentarily. Yeah sure, if they get a car blasting down the road at a high rate of speed, they'll probably jump on it, but most likely they will be giving a pretty broad cushion to most of the traffic on the road since their intention is simply to put in or "kill" time.

Just to clear another point up, Radar Jammers are illegal in ALL 50 states. Laser jammers aren't, but Laser Speed enforcement is relatively new to Police use and is still not acceptable in the courts of all states yet, so there's no need for a law banning them in those states. In NJ, laser is not yet an acceptable form of speed enforcement so there is no law against the jammer. I can guarantee you though, that once there is case law granting the use of laser speed enforcement, there will be a law to follow, banning the use of jammers. Be careful spending big money on a jammer when your state and states that you commonly traverse, may not even accept speed lasers as admissible proof of action.

Well, there are always going to be believers and non believers and I happen to be in the former because I believe radar detectors have benefits. Laser and you are pretty much caught no matter what you have but Ka or the less used X band you have a good chance to slow down to legal limits before being locked onto (especially on interstates) plus it's a benefit to know where the LEO's are, not that I excessively speed but occasionally will stray above legal. The 9500IX is great for speed traps and redlight camera's and forewarned is forearmed. I have been alerted in plenty of time in more than one situation.

Here's an example with the "Redline" which has a good "off-axis"capability.

I whole heartily agree. Instant on and laser will get you no matter what. However as the LEO'schecking for others hopefully you’ll get an earlier warning. I’ve used Escorts and Valentines for over 25 years. I’ve gotten two speeding tickets in that time using detectors. On one I was doing 90 plus passing a pulpwood truck on a two lane with 55 mph limit years ago. I jumped on the brakes as soon as I got the initial alert and pulled back in. The trooper was coming in the other direction, did a quick U-turn and gave me a ticket for 71 in a 55. I didn’t complain as I knew I was lucky I wasn’t clocked going faster as I would have been if not alerted. The other was about 10 years ago when I got a 10 over on a secondary highway “only” because I had forgotten to turn it on for the short trip.

Detectors have saved me many times over the years thereby paying for themselves and saving me the increased insurance rates I would have received. Unless you’re that .05% who drive the speed limits all the time, they can help. Unfortunately I’m not, as are most Shelby owners but the detector helps keep you honest and I actually drive slower knowing how easy it is to get ticketed.

They have also saved me and told me that I'm getting a ticket, especially from LIDAR.

Still one great investment.

You guys can do what you want with your money, I'm just trying to give you a little insight from the other side of the radar gun. I'm nothing even remotely close to a traffic officer and don't have even a third of the patience needed to sit on the side of the road and "watch" traffic until someone decides to speed... I would go completely insane.

Like I said though, you guys think the radar detector saved you, but none of us will ever know if it did or if the Officer was simply "killing time" with the radar running like I described above. Although, like many claim of religion, if the faith and belief in the security is enough to constitute the cost of the detector, I guess its worth every penny.

The Radar detector saved them!

I am willing to bet that 99% of the police have their radar running continuously. Only time that I have been hit with the instant on feature was in the daytime and that was in a city when the officer was using a laser on me. I was over the limit (not by much) but the officer couldn't safely step out and pull me over due to all the traffic that was around me in the surrounding lanes (at least that's what I think) so he gave me the ominous "STARE". Guess I was lucky that day.

Anyway, I feel radar detectors work fine. Yes it depends if the officer is running continuously or is in standby mode but from the other side it depends on if the driver is abusing the speed limit or if he cautious and non abusive (like me) and uses his radar to "catch himself when he is daydreaming and listening to tunes on a looooooong stretch of deserted hiway".

I don't condone reckless speeding but nearly everyone on the roads appear to be some degree above the speed limit. Besides, if catching speeders may be at the discretion of the office, then some speeding should be at the discretion of the driver, right?

It's just a big "cat and mouse" game and in the end, sometimes, you have to "pay to play".

I gotta agree with PistolWhip. Also around here they also use airplanes and helicopters to catch speeders. Common sense and keeping your eyes open are the best forms of detection. If you travel the same roads all the time it's much easier to know the radar and police hot spots. In unfamiliar territory it's not as easy. But then again if you're not familiar with the road doing the posted limit is probably not a bad idea.

Yeah I agree as well.

I drive the same routes every day and I'm always doing 15 over in the city and 30 over on the highway traffic/weather allowing. If I'm speeding I'm very focused on what is going on around me. If you need a radar detector to tell you there is a cop up ahead then you probably shouldn't be speeding in the first place.

I've gone 6 years without a ticket (Last one happened at a gas station of all places) and drive faster than anyone I know but I don't drive like an idiot in traffic or low visibility.

Radar detectors DO work, however, that doesn't mean that you don't have to still be careful where you speed. So if you bought one and drive with your eyes closed you're in the wrong. :hysterical: I have received tickets with my radar detector, and it has saved me a few as well. So... I still like having one. It's like having another set of eyes.

I agree with you PistolWhip. I have a cousin and uncle that are patrol officers. They both say the same exact explanation about detectors. They have both explained the instant on verses steady on situation to me. They chuckle every time they issue a ticet to a "dector driver". There is no doubt that detectors "work" in that when it picks up a sigle a light and warning come on, but so what?? I just picked up a signal. You can't beat the system guys!!:headscratch:

man they sell a heck of a lot of detectors for something that doesnt work.I agree that if you get hit with an instant on youre dead--but it does splash the signal so if youre behind that person, even a mile away youll get a hit and slow down--i know ive not gotten a ticket in 20 years and when im on the highway i always speed, not excessively but its rare for me to be passed.

There are numerous products on the market that do little if anything that sell well . It doesn't mean that they are good for anything. It's called marketing. But hey if spending money for a false sense of confidence when driving helps you out then by all means go for it. It's your money. ;)

Truest words in the thread and I couldn't agree more. Having had the same discussion with 'believers'.

But

Interesting story from last summer.

Another GT500 owner and I were at a car show, one the way home he ended up playing a little cat and mouse on the way home with a Ford GT that was also at the show. The following weekend we both hit another show and low and behold the same guy shows up in his Ford GT. We finally managed to meet up with him in the early afternoon at his car; he was a great guy to talk to and would no doubt be a lot of fun to hang with at any track event.

In any case he was saying how he used to have a radar jammer on his Ford GT but ended up taking the thing off; he said the thing put such a draw on the electrical system that it was killing his battery even while driving. His option was add another alternator or to ditch it; he ended up ditching it because he was worried about adding anything that may sap some of his HP.

Of course the best part of the whole conversation as we talked about how fast he has driven the car and where, and what he has done to avoid any type of radar or tickets over the years is that my friend is a police officer.

If you have a heavy foot, running a detector is better.... than NOT running one.

I normally try to use a rabbit as my first level of defense...tuck in behind a fast running car.

Using a rabbit AND a detector is almost foolproof. Watch for a quick flash of the rabbits tail lights, he will see cop cars sitting on side of road first. This works well if they are using the "triggered" approach. If they paint the rabbit, you know in advance, see his lights or pick up the paint on the detector.

If you regularly run a detector (and I do while in US) you see cops cruising with their radar on all the time. You "see" them in advance. When i do, I cool it for a while...its possibly an enforcement zone, they often run in packs.

Oh yes...i dont speed much in cities...thats where most of the cops are...and in addition...its most dangerous to do so....but a nice stretch of lonely highway...well that's just irresistable...

You have to let the big dog out sometimes, after all....and while it may not offer 100% protection....at the very least it makes me feel better that i have some potential coverage. I have 3 GT500s..and no tickets in 20 years (where is that wood???) :shift:

The 9500ix has saved me multiple tickets already. It is very sensative and I've had a few false alarms but I'd rather be cautious and have my license then have lots of tickets and a fast car that sits in the garage. Well worth the expense in my opinion.

On road trips, I use a radar detector.

I like both the Valentine1 & the Passport 9500ix.

I also use the smart phone Trapster app from http://www.trapster.com/.

Trapster actually works amazing, however, I have noticed it will drain your phone battery really fast, even with it plugged into the cigarette lighter.

Trapster has saved me many times before my radar goes off.
