Gas Guzzler Tax

Five Oh B

Recommended Posts

We were altering an order for a customer today who changed his mind on colors and the new order came up with a Gas Guzzler Tax listed. No dollar amount on it, or the car and options, but the presence of the tax being listed tells me that final EPA testing for fuel economy is done and the GT500 didn't perform economically enough to avoid the tax.

MSRP will reflect the tax, but it will be a line item on the window sticker so we'll know how much it is eventually as pricing is released.

Once again, Great info Five Oh B...

(even though it's not what I needed to keep the cost down)

Keep it coming, the more, the better.

HEY...........

You mean to tell me the Shelby isn't fuel-effecient??? ;)

KingCobra.

Has to be better than my Mach 1. I average 14 mpg, and have gotten a best ever (all freeway - mostly cruise control) of 22 mpg. I've had tanks as bad as 9-10 mpg when I've been rough on the car (lots of racing, etc.). The 4.30 gears certainly don't help!

I haven't heard what the EPA will rate the GT500 at, but a good guess is 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

How much was the gas guzzler tax for your car & any others that you know of from previous years?

Actually, my car was not considered a gas guzzler by the EPA. I think the EPA rating for my car was 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, just barely over the threshhold. The 2003-4 SVT Cobra was a gas guzzler, though. I think the highway rating was 22 mpg? I seem to remember the tax being $1,000? I'm sure that someone on this forum remembers the exact figures.

Found this link on Gas Guzzler Tax...heres the link. they also have a PDF file for more info.

What is the Gas Guzzler Tax?

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS.

The fuel economy figures used to determine the Gas Guzzler Tax are different from the fuel economy values provided on this web site and in the Fuel Economy Guide. The tax does not depend on your actual on-the-road mpg, which may be more or less than the EPA published value. The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars).

GAS GUZZLER TAX

Unadjusted MPG (combined)* Tax

at least 22.5 No tax

at least 21.5, but less than 22.5 $1000

at least 20.5, but less than 21.5 $1300

at least 19.5, but less than 20.5 $1700

at least 18.5, but less than 19.5 $2100

at least 17.5, but less than 18.5 $2600

at least 16.5, but less than 17.5 $3000

at least 15.5, but less than 16.5 $3700

at least 14.5, but less than 15.5 $4500

at least 13.5, but less than 14.5 $5400

at least 12.5, but less than 13.5 $6400

less than 12.5 $7700

* The combined fuel economy MPG value (55% city, 45% highway) is used to determine tax liability. The MPG value is also adjusted slightly to account for differences in test procedures made since the base year, but it is not adjusted for in-use short fall. The unadjusted combined MPG of a vehicle can be approximated from the city and highway values provided in the Fuel Economy Guide and on this website by the following equation:

(1/(.495/City MPG + .351/Highway MPG)) + .15

Since this is an approximate calculation, the actual gas guzzler tax may be off by one tax bracket.

Now that Ford has this missing piece of info I believe the final price for this car can be finalized. I hope they release the prices soon so the orders can be processed and set in order and production can begin in early June. It would be fantastic if we could start seeing these cars by summers end or early fall! :yup:

thats the 1st I've heard of the "L59" code. Did any one else have that on their DORA? If so when was it added to the DORA's?

DORA's change as information is updated. For example, you only have a partial VIN # in the upper right corner of your DORA today, but eventually an updated DORA will be generated showing the full VIN # when it is available. If there is a change in the Priority Code, options, colors, etc, you'll get an updated DORA, too.

Can't believe the 500 won't meet or beat the minimum 22-23 mpg on the guzzler tax if that's what it is. We get 22 mpg at 80 + mph in our mach1 auto with 2 people and baggage. Think it be even better over in 6th gear OD?? Ought a do it at a high idle. lol, Oh Well, WH

Remember that it's a combined estimate of city & highway. see chart & link above for more info.

I agree, :yup: My 1997 Cobra gets a solid 25 MPG at 75-80 mph on the highway & 21-23 MPG when shifting on the a lot on the back roads or in city driving, granted I don't downshift thru every gear when coming to a stop...but maybe that's what they are doing wrong at the testing lab...downshifting thru every gear so it DOES get lousey numbers so the government gets more tax money. :nonono:
