550-horsepower engine approved for sale in AustraliaBy MARK PHELAN

FREE PRESS COLUMNIST "Add this to the many hints of a super-performance version of Ford's new 5.0-liter V8 engine: A supercharged version in the works can produce around 550 horsepower, according to Australian reports.

The Web newsletter GoAutoNews reports Ford has certified the engine for sale in Australia, where the automaker's top V8 today is the same supercharged 5.4-liter engine that produces 540 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque in the Shelby GT 500.The new engine produces more power and uses less fuel, GoAuto reports. Ford's Australian unit has a long and successful history of building high-performance cars and trucks.Ford declined to comment, but if the automaker builds the engine, you can bet U.S. drivers will see it in special editions of the Mustang and F-150.The new V8 goes on sale in the 2011 Mustang. It produces 412 horsepower and 312-pound-feet of torque in naturally."
