Lt. Frank Bullitt (aka: Steve McQueen)

Recommended Posts

For those of us of a certain age, we grew up at a time of momentous events (the Cuban missile crisis, Kennedy assassinations, Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, MLK "I have a dream" speech, Kent State, Chicago Democratic Convention Riots, Woodstock, Earth Day, Apollo 11 moon landing, etc). We also had many Hollywood heroes and movies providing a needed diversion from those trying times when the country wasn't sure where we were heading. Some of the more memorable include: Paul Newman and Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider, Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate; HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey, etc. etc. etc. But for muscle car enthusiasts, motorcycle junkies and action scene aficionados, NO ONE matched the "cool" factor of Steve McQueen. You could see the future promise of his special talents in The Great Escape. By the time Bullitt was released, McQueen was approaching the zenith of his career. We're lucky to have lived in his time, and he died way too young at the age of 50. On this, the 80th anniversary of his birth, I salute his life and legacy. He left his significant imprint on our pop culture, including a special Ford Mustang named after one of his best, if not most notable and enduring movies. For us "old" guys (and those who might not have even been born yet) here are some links to his history and what is surely THE GREATEST AUTO CHASE SCENE EVER!!! salute.gif

I am of that certain age and you nailed it. McQueen was the right guy at the right time. I own Bullitt and that chase scene is, if not the best, one of the top three. Remember that commercial a year or two ago with him in the corn field?

Another great movie he had was " The Getaway" with Ali Macgraw, who I think was his wife at the time. Anyway, the best part in the movie was when Doc McCoy (Steve McQueen) slaps the snot out of Ali for betraying him, I loved it! Lots of good car chases and shoot'em up scenes.
