It is eerie when you drive through the area and see smoke and steam rising out from cracks in the ground. JeffJ Posted February 5, 2010 Report Share Posted February 5, 2010 There is a mine that was closed in 1889 in New Castle, Colorado due to a large explosion that killed 49 miners. This mine is still smoldering after 120 years now. As you drive along I-70, if you know where to look, you can see the line of no vegitation on the ground due to the burning mine underneath. On the back side of the hill, you can still find areas where steam still comes out of the ground from the smoldering coal vein. Luckily, the vein is not under any buildings or they would be in the same situation. Of course, the name of the mountain is "Burning Mountain".
