Video of, 'engine destruction' of Volvo. Do not watch if you love cars.

Is this the Gas guzzler, oil burning, smog makers, that are the ruin of our atmosphere/ and creating Global Warming' ?

Volvo's ? How many 'tree hug'en liberals', drive Volvo's. I'd say a whole bunch.

So, it was NOT the Large, SUV's, Motor Homes, Semi Trucks, and Hummer drivers. It was the, Tree Hug'en, 'Save the Planet', Volvo drivers.

This video represents why, Children don't drive cars and why Liberal Socialist Democrats should not be allowed to spend, 'Tax payer money'.

Health Care is Next. Oh, sh-t, that should really be interesting.

All that pollution just to fry an egine! Now they will need OSHA to come out and dig up the soil to remove the contaminated soil from the oil. Nothing a couple hundred grand won't take care of! Gotta love those liberals when they set policies! LOL

BTW....the cost of the government healthcare will be the least of everyone's worry! If they have it structured remotely anything like the way they did with this cars program....no one will ever get proper care needed, muchless being able to get it time! This has been the biggest mess I have ever seen with all the red tape involved just to dispose of a vehicle and document what they traded and what they purchased!

If you knew everything the government is getting on you I don't think many people would use this program! When you access their site on this program they can even obtain everything off your computer! And its all legal like!

This program should be able to show every American why the Gov can NOT run healthcare :hysterical::hysterical:

I think every dealer should require every customer trading a vehicle in under this program to have to sit at the dealership, fill out the pages of forms required, make them have to scan them all into the computer and then upload everything to the government's site. After wasting 3 - 4 hours of their time trying to get everything filled out and submitted they will not want government involved in anything!

The sad thing is they will all learn this after it is too late and they are stuck with lousy high cost healthcare and seeing their taxes raised to death just to pay for this mess!

Sounds like you should have opted out of the program! If I'm giving you $4,500 of my tax dollars to prop your industry up, I want accountability and not another AIG. If you don't want to spend 2-4 hours for $4,500, I'll take it, and you can sit in your showroom watching the dealer across the street sell cars. Or we can just call it a day, cancel the program, and you can all fend for yourselves I really don't care to be honest with ya! Neither I or my industry is getting any assistance.

That video really upsets me. That was a perfectly good Vovlo circa '99-02 S80 T6....a top-of-the-line twin-turbo model just like my father's....as far as the video shows, there was NOTHING wrong with that vehicle that made it deserve that kind of abuse.

I really don't think Volvos necessarily exemplify the liberal party....having worked at a Volvo dealership from '01-05, I can justfiably state that most of our customers were more identified with conservative values. They bought Volvos because they were conservatively styled, well-built, and did not flaunt status.

It's sad to see such a waste of good machinery and governement spending.

What does accountability have to do with having a messed up system that is poorly structured?

And how do you figure we are getting $4,500????? We are not getting that money, the CONSUMERS are getting that money! The government is buying the car from the consumer! We don't make a dime off that $4.500. Our profit is limited to whatever we can make over and above our cost! The $4,500 the government is giving to CONSUMERS for their clunker is 100% allocated to them. 100% of that money is reduced from the price they are paying for the vehicle!

We don't get to resell the clunker. It has to be destroyed. What we get is to front the $4,500 for the consumer, interest free, having the dealer's personal money tied up, until the government pays it back to the dealer! We are actually giving out free loans of $3,500 - $4,500 on this! We are being the bank!

Now multiply $4,500 by 50 vehicles! That's $225,000 of the dealer's personal money tied up until the government pays it back! That's about $1,700 a month in interest being lost for the free use of the dealer's money!

Some dealers do not have that kind of cash on hand to float while waiting to get paid back from the government! They have to actually borrow that money just to be able to float it until they get paid back and they have to pay interest on it! So it is actually costing dealers money to participate in this program.

And a lot of dealers have stopped participating now because of the nightmare involved with this. Many have said had they known it was going to be like this they would have never got involved and let the dealer across the street have it all!

In fact, the dealer across the street has stopped taking trade-ins on this program!

The owner of our dealership has over a $150k of his personal money tied up in this and so far not one single deal has been able to be fully submitted yet to the government! Our F&I guy handling all this mess has been working from 8 AM - 4 AM the following morning for over a week now and was there all weekend trying to get all this paper work submitted.

Some dealers are having all the sales people scan the documents and upload them to the government site. One said they had 150 cars sitting, got 30 submitted and all 30 were REJECTED so far!

Talk about a mess! And this is what the people have to look forward to government run healthcare! Oh well, I guess the people can just opt out of getting healthcare and refuse all that free care they think they are going to get! LOL

Would you have paid $3,500 - $4,500 for it?

There are a lot of nice vehicles being traded in under this program that if you were to drive the lots and see one you would pay the $4,500 for before the engine is destroyed I would bet the dealer would gladly sell it to you! They would get the $4,500 back they have in it and not have to deal with the red tape involved with dealing with the government! The dealer can take it in trade by paying the same $4,500 the government is paying if they wanted to. So being able to find something nice from all these vehicles shouldn't be that hard.

One dealer said they took in a 93 Explorer. One owner with 38k original miles! Said it was NICE! That is something I would pay $4,500 for to have as a personal vehicle!

Not sure what your point is? To take the money yet still complain? How about we talk about the BS paperwork dealers put the average buyer through! I had more forms, with more fine print, buying a car than my house I think! But I just take that as what I need to do to get the car I want. If you don't want to have the benefit of this program, after all it is a failure anyway right, then take the sign down and send people across the street!

Easy fix!

In that sense why dealers are still participating in the program and there are talks about extending it so that must mean that are dealers out there willing still to aprticipate, i mean what incentive do they have, and why would the dealer want to turn into a bank when the bank is declining loans?

If a dealer wants to give the same $4,500 in trade for the car, and sell it or save it, or reduce the cost of any paperwork they can do that! So again there is nothing forcing the owner or dealership to do this.

Ford has said, not the government, that the program helped them reverse a sales slide that's gone on since mid 2008. Ford has made other inroads that helped, such that people choose Ford in the first place, but it's seems to have had it's intended effect, paperwork or not. The thought was the $1 billion would last a year...obviously it was more successful than planned.

Also this additional $2 billion is NOT new money. It's from the money already approved as part of the Stimulus Package. This is not a new request for funds only assigning the already approved funds to something that might actually be working.

C'mon, Jeff! You know very well that is not the dealer that puts you through that! That is what dealers are required to do by LAW! All those forms you hate having to sign only exist because of LAWS coming from the State GOVERNMENT and Federal GOVERNMENT!

Do you really think dealers would have all those forms if they were not required by LAW????

Again, take WHAT MONEY??? We aren't taking any money! The CONSUMERS are the ones taking the money! That money is paid to the CONSUMERS! NOT the dealer!

The dealer makes the same whether you have a clunker to trade or not!

Do they get additional sales coming from it? Sure, but they don't get any money from it other than the same amount of money they would make off selling the car to anyone else without a clunker! So for some extra sales made to get rid of some inventory the dealer is paying floor plan on they get to do a ton of extra paper work that would otherwise not exist!

And if you think you have a lot to go through buying a car by just merely reading some forms and siging your name, well come on down and see what a real nightmare and headache is!

ShelbyDude, is the C for C program helping your dealership move cars? Are people coming in to buy cars, that wouldn't otherwise be there? Would the owner of your dealership rather not participate in the program? Just some honest questions... I understand that aspects of the program are not ideal, and there is extra effort involved, and it seems like certain autos are being destroyed that could otherwise be used somewhere (though there is a glut of used cars out there), but in the end- I would think the salesmen would be happy to stop twiddling their thumbs and move some cars.

edit: I see you answered some of my questions above while I was typing this...

Not quite! IF the vehicle is WORTH $4,500 or more then there is nothing forcing the dealership to do this! MOST of these clunkers are only worth $50 - $2,000 as a trade-in. So that leaves dealers FORCED to do this if they want to get rid of a vehicle and gain a customer.

I didn't say it wasn't a success. It is actually the only thing that has been a success that the government has done so far! A success as far as how many people responded to take advantage of the program, it was a big success! As far as the way government was prepared to handle it and set up the process to claim the money it is a big nightmare! That part is a failure!

And where did you get this billion was suppose to last a year from??? July 1st - Nov 1st is a year??? I thought that was only 5 months?

As for the government ran out of money in the first 4 days, that is grossly incorrect! (this was the media reporting this) The program went into effect as of July 1st. Dealers could start doing deals on July 1st. Only any deals they did were at their own risk until the official rules were posted which wasn't until July 24th. So dealers have been writing deals since July 1st! Some were contracting their deals while others were only taking deposits and holding cars until the rules were posted. The rules were posted July 24th, which was also the first day dealers were allowed to get registered. Then they couldn't beging loading deals to the government until after they were emailed a login and password to get into the government site to begin submitting deals. The first day any dealers could start that was on July 27th.

So dealers were writing up dealers for 26 days before the government was set up to allow any deals to be submitted!

Then during the first week after dealers could submit deals the government site kept crashing because it couldn't handle the amount of dealers trying to get deals submitted!

The government had only received a fraction of deals being claimed during that first 4 days and based on feedback and the back log of deals piled up since July 1st, it was estimated the money MAY have been used up already! They have no way of knowing for sure since only a small fraction of deals were able to be successfully uploaded to the government site!

Based on those estimates that the money MAY be gone already after a FULL MONTH of deals being written up and getting back logged, the government pushed to get another 2 billion added. They had originally planned on 4 billion for this and decided to start with just 1 billion first to see how it does. Then depending on how well it did they would determine whether or not to add more of the 4 billion to it. Now they are wanting the extra 2 billion for it.

Your right, what I meant by taking the money was you're getting the benefit of a sale that otherwise might not have happened, just like any other incentive program. You have to acknowledge that in this atmosphere if the Administration couldn't show and account for every car and every disposal and every transaction all hell would be raised. Look at the posts already because only a week into the program they aren't ready to cull the data, verify it, and release it. Imagine the firestorm if there was no data! Look, I'm sure it's a royal PITA, but it is what it is. It seems to be working beyond anyone's expectations so we deal and move on to fight another day. If nothing else it has people considering the purchase of a new car and that's good for the industry overall and the economy. These were meant to incremental sales over a year but the program is wildly successful so the burden is greater I'm sure.

BTW: For those that point to Toyota or the others in the top 10, let's not forget that the Mazda 6 is made on the same assembly line as the Mustang. The reason Ford can reduce the cost of the Mustang is because the Mazda 6 sells so they can achieve the economies of scale needed to keep costs down. MANY Toyota cars are made here in the US with American suppliers.

I don't dispute the inefficiencies in the process. I don't even know what the process is! You do and I take your word it's a PITA, no doubt. But let not throw the baby out with the bath water here. and again this is already approved funding that's not going to banks or the insurance industry fat cats, it's helping average American's get a new car at a more favorable price while reducing gas consumption and maybe lowering demand and prices for those of us driving muscle cars!

Would you have paid $3,500 - $4,500 for it?

Yes, I would have, if it were a clean original Volvo with no mechanical trouble. Again, I am only going off what I saw in the video, so for all I know, the car may have not been safe or reliable.

But my point is that vehicle was hardly a "clunker" based on my experience with those vehicles...

Our owner actually wanted no part of this. We had to argue with him to do it. We had deposits on cars based on the assumption we were participating. I even had a link put on our web site promoting we were participating. The owner still had not given us an official word if was doing it or not. He went it, but I don't think he is to happy with the idea. Naturally he loves the idea of all the extra cars being sold because of it. But at the end of the day once all the smoke settles Ill see if he would do it again if given the choice.

For the headache involved with this I would probably opt out if I were the owner or at least until the government could simplify the process enough to make it go smoothly.

The saddest part of this thing is that most of the old Ford, Lincoln, Mercury cars do not qualify! They get above 18 mpg combined fuel rating! And to think all these years those libs were all complaining how American cars get lousy gas mileage! LOL More old Toyotas qualify though! Imagine that!

As ole Gomer Pile would say.....SURPRISE! SURPRISE! LOL

Well given the work involved for you I guess that's a good thing or you would have had a lot more people buying a lot more cars and the funding would have been dried up in 48 hours!

There is no extra work involved in this for me personally, other than pulling up the vehicles to make sure they qualify. I just write them up and all the headache stuff is passed to someone else to deal with. I have no liability nor extra work involved for myself. I just sell them and move on to the next one.
