kahmann
So other than skipping my Sunday morning donut, what does anyone here recommend to significantly cut weight of my SGT? I'm specifically interested in parts that have been replaced with lightweight ones and/or pulling of generally unnecessary parts that equal unnecessary weight. I don't want to rip the back seat of my car out or anything, so I guess I'm looking for less conventional ideas. Thanks for any input of experience. Ken If you also cut out the ice cream and chips before bed and start working out in the morning you can drop 20 pounds off your front end. ilmor
Aluminum driveshaft, I believe, cuts about 30 lbs and frees up some good HP while doing so. Also, I believe you can purchase wheels that weigh approximately 6 or 7 lbs. less per wheel than the bullets.

shelbytexan
Ken, i have an 4'' aluminum d.s. from axle exchange. I know you have heard some people say that the 4'' shaft may rub but mine works great. I put mine on the scale and it weighed 21 lbs with the flange. I didn't weigh the factory d.s. but it is suppose to weigh about double or a little more. Just looking at the new shaft you might think it looks much heavier but you can easily hold it in one hand. The shaft is rated at 750 plus h.p. I paid 699.00 for the heavy duty shaft plus shipping. You would need a upper adjustible control arm for the pinion angle. This mod is kind of pricey. I have about 1100.00 including labor in this mod so it is fairly expensive. There are a lot of people out there that make and sell these shafts so take your pick. You can go to theaxleexchange.com for more information on the shaft i bought. Good luck,Kenny

shelbytexan
I checked with coast and there d.s. is about the same price for the heavy-duty shaft as the axle exchange except i believe coast had free shipping. Both company's were very knowledgeable but i was just drawn to axleexchange a little more. I suspect there quality is very close to each other. Is the driveshaft a different length than the OEM or is other geometry affected somehow?
blueshawk
Recommend Coast Driveline - Coast Driveline Who that has one of these one piece aluminum srives shafts actually has taken it to close to the the top speed of this car 140-150 mph (3:55 gears)? I have the stock DS and it was absolutely smooth at 125 mph. The reason for the two piece shafts with a bearing in the middle is to essentially have to short drive shafts instead of one long one. This pushes the critical frequency of the rotating elements up high. The question is at what speed does the critical frequency of the one piece aluminum shaft occur. I've heard that it is not as high as the stock DS. I would like to see a two piece aluminum DS (3.5"-4") made for our cars because that would have an even higher critical frequency than the stock DS and be lighter too. I belive the critical RPM for the shaft is around 8000rpm. I have had mine to around 130mph and perfectly smooth. I think the biggest advantage for the 1-piece is that there is a lower torque loss over the "extra" U-joint. ***edit and 1/2 the rotating mass!
