I was unaware a cruise ship

Recommended Posts

Something (besides the spelling) of this story does not sit right with me.

"A luxury cruise ship carrying passengers between Rome and Singapore came under attack from Somali pirates as it sailed between Somalia and Yemen on Sunday.

The Nautica, an Oceania cruise ship was carrying 690 American, British and Australian passengers and 386-member crew when two small fishing boats treied to intercept it.

The ship's captain, Jurica Brajcic, began evasive maneuvres when the pirates were about 1,000 yards away from the ship and managed to avert the attack."

Huh? :headscratch: Those must have been some really crappy fishing boats to not be able to keep up with a HUGE luxury cruise liner!

Actually, cruise ships have a lot of juice they don't routinely use. With the propulsion pods they can turn pretty quick. They cruise at about 20 knots, so they can probably hit 30 without trying too hard, they are ocean going and have a lot of fuel, not to mention lot of navigation gear and those pesky radios.

So, if you are in a little boat slamming through the waves at 30 knots (which isn't exactly easy to begin with), what exactly are you going to do with that cruise liner? Do you think shooting at it will make it stop? Do you think you could even hit the damn thing? Do you think maybe there's one or two guns on that ship that might shoot back if you did open fire? Maybe grappling hooks? Harpoon? Maybe if you follow it long enough they will rescue you when you run out of fuel in the middle of the ocean?

The odd part is not that the ship got away, it would be odd if they caught one.

You will always remember this as the day that Captain Jack Sparrow almost caught a cruise ship :hysterical:

In heavy seas, the cruise ship could easily run away from a dinghy.

The Predators seem to be doing a pretty good job of keeping the heads down in the Afghanistan Pakistan border regions. Maybe the CIA permanent staff could take just a little time out from their political activities and deliver some actionable intelligence on the Somalian pirates.

Not being a boat person I didn't think of it like that. I guess that would be one heck of a wake to try and tackle.

Here's a pic....

Ive been on the bridge of a very large cruise ship 4000+passengers and 1300 crew and these things are very capable.

They are much more formidable than a tanker, they are a lot larger (up to 15 passenger decks high) a lot more manouverable (steering uses a joy stick similar to your nintendo), they are quite fast at over 25 mph and most importantly.....

Has lots of crew that have access to handguns for security if necessary

Also...lots of eyes to spot them approaching...

They can turn on a dime if necessary using propulsion pods.

The wake is immense...

It would be a challenge to take over one of these big

ships.

Don't even need that much fire power. One M240 machine gun with 500 rounds will take care of both boats and crew. Save the 50's for a rainy day :happy feet:

Can you say: Is there anyone down range

Your right but a 50 just sounds so damn good.

I say the U.S. buys a civilian looking "vulnerable cruise ship". We would fill it with U.S. Marines and keep them in seclusion off the deck. Then troll up and down the area considered the hot zone. Let the pirate fishing boat catch you and let those gangly bastids board the ship.

Then, the pirates take a whipping of a lifetime.

Hey 51, They are not larger than the ULCC's Ultra Large Crude Carriers that come to our port....1300-1500 feet in length, 360 feet wide and the lowest point on the ship that they could throw a ladder onto is 90 feet from the water and 360,000 tons loaded. But you're right, they don't handle very well it takes them 2 miles to come to a complete stop, I don't know how the heck the pirates could even board them.
