WP64
Emanuel's a freaking ball busting liberal whack job IMO, he should be perfect for the Obama Nation. If I'm not mistaken, he told Prime Minister Tony Blair not to 'screw it up' when appearing with Clinton in a TV appearance from the White House, a real class act... His public service shtick will never fly, but if it should see the light of day I'm all for it, once I see the details of course.

stump_breaker
What's the opposite of a "freakin (GOP) ball busting liberal whack job"??????????????? The stuff he is proposing is not new it's just not mainstream. I think there should be a program like this set up but not forced. I myself would like to see more people trained in the basics. I know times it would have made my job a heck of a lot easier not having to deal with uneducated people "just trying to help".

strawberrytetra
That is just so wrong. Most people volunteer when they see a need that needs to be filled. I can understand making sure people know what to do in certain events but that isn't right to say all americans are required to do it. I think they would be surprised as to how many people would volunteer.
Guest markham51
Obama's chief of staff choice favors compulsory universal service http://current.com/items/89503102_obama_s_...iversal_service He was picked for his ability to execute (get things done) and for his experience. Every President needs these kinds of people on his team. He is primarily an Office of the President administrator and so it doesn't matter what his thinking is on the Military, guns or abortion, he does not set policy. His role specifics will be determined by Obama. He needs experienced administrators around him to execute tasks. Obama is smart enough to know this. I would do the same thing. And you know what else...he is not going to give a damn about what the right thinks when he is doing it.
Sherri Leicht
If done right, it could be a good asset for todays young people. But I do think it should be set up as voluntary at first to see the responses and be a totally seperate entity from our military. But lets face it, some of today's young people need some discipline and the silver spoon taken out of their mouths. Others could benefit from it by having their self esteem and self confidence built up.

The White House Chief of Staff is in charge of the day to day schedule of the President, he is also the last word in who gets to see the President, when they get to see them and what documents go into and come out of the President's office. All presentations to the President are subject to review by the Chief of Staff. Controlling the President's schedule as well as his doorway and what passes in and out gives the Chief of Staff a tremendous amount of political power. In reality, he controls what the President sees and hears, and as such who will have the ability to influence the President. As such, the Chief of Staff has the ability to influence policy, especially with an inexperienced President.

JeffIsHereToo
Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, a top John McCain supporter, praised Emanuel as a "wise choice." "Rahm knows Capitol Hill and has great political skills. He can be a tough partisan but also understands the need to work together. He is well-suited for the position of White House chief of staff," he said in a written statement.

Your Right; But Bush will be leaving a missguided unfinished Iraq War that he started and Bin Laden Public Enemy#1 still on the loose and an Economy close to shambles with the majority of Americans much poorer.......... I wish we could turn the clock back to the Clinton President days......Guess "Hillbillies" not bad??????????

I can understand making sure people know what to do in certain events but that isn't right to say all americans are required to do it. I think they would be surprised as to how many people would volunteer. Not to mention that 18 to 25 are college years, or immediately following college years, and during the years that young men and woman might be seeking to get married and start famlies, and to begin their careers, and the potential impacts on businesses and our free-market economy by not having these young people available to start working, and the freedom to choose ... plus many more problems which could surface which I am not thinking of. A necessary military service or the continuing choice to volunteer or work in a government job I can understand, but to be forced into it otherwise seems, again, like a dictatorship or socialist thinking, or just more unecessary government control and intervention in our lives, if nothing else. As an administrator/gate keeper, he may well have opportunity to influence his own agenda even though he is not responsible for setting the agenda. How well he "sticks to his knitting" ie does his job will determine how long he lasts in that position.

I do have a feeling that she'll run for senate. Maybe, maybe not... but she wasn't running for the Presidential office, she was running for VP. It seems to be pretty common for people on both sides to forget that. She obviously has made an impact.
