SUPERCAR WARS heat up - A Supercharged 650-hp Corvette SS

Recommended Posts

now THIS will be trouble, boys!

The real question is what is Ford going to do for a follow-up to the Ford GT?

I think Chevy has always been King of the Hill in terms of power, but lost that when Ford produced the GT. GM is simply reclaiming that spot - but I sure would like to see Ford kick their butts again with something.

Make no mistake, as much as we love our Mustangs (and we can certainly mod them to spank 'vettes all day long) as factory hotrods go, the Mustang is not the appropriate weapon against the vette.

And the proposed super vette won't be here until fall 08, so even if it is a go, by then 100+k for a then 5 Y/O chassis that bears very little resemblance to an assembly line Vette will be a tough sell. They might as well call it the man-racer and sell it to sanctioned race teams only :hysterical:

And incidentally, the business case for a decent GT500KR will diminish as time goes by as well(over 50k at least, which is really starting to look silly on the same chassis as a V-6 rental car at 20k). Unless a good number of really well-off folks turn in thier hard won(and ADM'd) GT500's at a loss to have the "next" non-SHELBY SHELBY, as the SHELBY GT actually makes a trip through Vegas...

At a 100k what is this really competition for? a Ford GT40? Definitely not a $45k Mustang. I bet someone can add on $55k of stuff to make it run with this car, but what's the point?

One overlooked thing is also, IN MY OPINION the type of people who can buy a $100k car don't go around racing other people on the streets or off. Maybe a race team buying the car for that purpose, but again to race something in their class (Ford GT40).

Oh by the way, did I MENTION YET THAT CHEVY SUCKS. :hysterical:

+1 - my first thought was this is not comp. for the Mustang Family - this is a new supercar. Imagine the insurance.....2 seater, 650 HP, fiberglass, 100K+, but I bet a blast to drive for anyone lucky enough to afford and fit into this thing. How long until we see a video of some fart can car with a giant wing and a collection of stickers claiming to destroy this vette on the road?

Ford will probably attack back with the V10 Shelby Cobra that they developed last year. The baseline horsepower for that car was 650, and on "RIDES", Carroll looked right at the camera and said " and if they want to mess around with us then, there is plenty of room in this V10 to take the HP as high as we want".

If not the Cobra, maybe the "chrome bullet" as I call it. I don't remember what name they gave the car, maybe it was the Daytona, but the HP numbers for that car was around 725 HP.

We'll see...

Each and everyone of these will sell. If a GT500KR is made, each one of those will sell as well. These types of cars will be made to the tune of 300-500. They will be collectors cars.

If you mean tough sell to the bean counters, then I agree. I still think it will pass as brand image is a big deal.

I heard (from a source) Ford will be releasing the Shelby GR1 for 2009, I believe it will be released under the Daytona name.

The bean counters at Ford are not buying it already. And they are the ones in the drivers seat with the current high ADM/demand car. So if limited production supercars was such an easy market to tap, why wouldn't Ford do it on the existing platform(GT), (the one they already planned an amortized extension on)? And how can Ford make enough of a business case to sell a super GT500 at only a couple of hundred units when the current Boy racer is 100+k and the man racer as yet has no home and thus no sales? You can already see the results of a serious lack of attention to high performance at Ford with the SVT issue and now this little tidbit.

Let's just hope they don't start to focus on sh*tcans again like the Focus, Escort, Pinto and the like.

Ford is finally starting to look like it is heading in the right direction again (hell they finally built a 500 hp car that I actually went out and purchased - at SEVERAL thousand $$$ over MSRP), and if they come out with a new GT500KR or something similar with 600-700 hp I might just trade my Shelby in and shovel another semi-tractor trailer load of my hard earned dollars Ford's way again.

Sometimes car manufacturers act as if there aren't enough of us out there or simply not enough interest in them to justify production of a real muscle car again, but this time they found out the truth of the matter and that is that there are PLENTY of gear heads and muscle car fanatics in this country (and across the world) who WILL go down to the nearest dealer and plunk down a large deposit to secure something that is worth purchasing (even if it is "just a little overpriced").

I personally don't care for the two seater sports cars with no trunk and no room for anything other than a big busted blonde "material girl" but on the other hand, I don't like the new breed of 4 door "sports" cars such as the new SRT8 Charger/300 etc... I can't see tooling around town with the wife and a couple of kids in car seats with 400+ horsepower just itching to be unleashed (someone might just forget there's kids in the back seat)....

I am old school... retro look with 2 doors, backseat and a trunk for tools and a cooler, rear wheel drive, large displacement engine with massive power potential, serious mean look to the grill and front end, dual exhaust that ROARS if I want it to.... oh and did I mention a huge motor with monster power and torque from the factory? The list could go on and on but you get the idea.

I may be old but I've NEVER seen any young people turn their heads in disgust at the sight (and sound) of a 70 Mach 1 or any nice muscle car from the late 60s/early 70's era.

Just goes to show that some things never get old.

Oh well like somebody else said nobody that pays 100,000.00 for a car is going to be running it in the streets anyway. I pulled next to a new zo6 this am and he just looked as i hit 2nd and lit em up! 95% of the vette owners here in SoCal do not "DRIVE"em anyway they paint murals on the inside of their hoods of their cars

At the risk of sounding like a broken record...where is the Ford equivalent of the Vette? The GT40 was priced 2x a C6 (almost 3x).

Why all these Shelby v Vette discussions?

Where - is - the Ford Vette?? ($50k - 2 seats - 400 hp)

Sounds like a new THUNDERBIRD?

Why doesn't Ford want to go toe to toe with the Vette?

The Mustang is a Camaro competitor - step up, Bill - let SVT give us a 'Bird that Runs with the Big Dogs. :shift:

I think Ford has such a bad taste in it's mouth from the last Tbird that they want to leave it dormant a bit longer. Don't get me wrong, I know little about the car and am not saying it's a bad car, I'm just saying from a business standpoint they were a disaster because very few people bought them.

Instead, people just bought a little schooner and looked through the porthole. :fan::hysterical::hysterical:

I love it, name one car after something you do through a pair of binoculars, one after a name for a hooker in Vegas, and one after a bean. :headscratch:

I say forget trying to compete with the Vette, beat it!

Come out with a smaller (2,800 lbs) 2-seater with 325 HP and smoke the vette.

(Boy this will get some reactions.)
