Intermittent rattle in rear

Recommended Posts

Our SGT has an intermittent rattle in the back.

I noticed it on the test drive. It's been back to the dealer a couple of times but they can't reproduce it. Sounds like the right exhaust is rattling but everything looks fine. It usually starts about 20-30 minutes into the drive and gets progressively louder. Sometimes it continues and sometimes there is a "thunk" and it stops. When the car is cool it never happens.

Any ideas??

It is usually the left rear exhaust hanger. Some were too long and hit the sub frame. Check the underside of the car to see if any paint is missing in the general area of both muffler hangers. It should be towards the front of the car right after the exhaust pipe comes over the rear axle.

That kinda makes sense since the stainless exhaust can lengthen 3/8" or more between cold/hot extremes.
