I have 89 instead of 88 in the 6th and 7th place, which I feel confident is the code for convertible.

 

Edit: but I don't see what the 9th position means...one of my verts has a 9, and one has a 1...the 9 was built first... : headscratch :

Check digit maybe? Don't know about Fords but GM uses a check digit in their VINs. It is somehow used to verify authenticity of the VIN.
