super rare or screw up?

I was wondering if every shelby owner has matching numbers?

I just bought my shelby gt my csm number is 4648 on the dash and the paperwork, however i opened the hood at the dealership and the csm number is 4646 :o

I almost didnt buy it because i know how important numbers can be to the authenticity of the car.

the dealer told me they would contact shelby to either get a new plate for the front and /or a letter stating that this was a factory mistake to add to my paperwork.

Does anyone out there have my under the hood badging for csm 07sgt4648 If so i may have theirs for csm 07sgt4646

have not heard yet what shelby will do to resolve the problem yet.

any ideas from anyone whether to just leave it alone and call this rare , or must i do everything possible to make these numbers match?

It would be nice if this was like stamp collecting or coin collecting. Then you'd have a rarity. The numbers are supposed to match. You should be able to check everything out against the VIN on the Shelby GT registry page:

I believe it's rare but a simple mistake when stamped at SAI.

It would be interesting to know if CSM4646 has 4648 under the hood and the 2 badges got mixed up.

The funny thing about this is, i just checked the registry and both numbers are assigned to my vin#

I registered th 07sgt4648

I just heard about this today and I know that John Walker is already working on this for you.

Bud

Great do you know any of the details? are they going to send me a new badge and a letter stating the mix up?

2 csm numbers assigned to one car... your Shelby must be worth twice that of everyone elses. :)

How did you check the registry? I thought it was write-only. I didn't know one could view or search it.

It should be a rare car due to the mix up. I'd keep it that way but with registry papers to go along with it. Very unusual but a good unusual!

What Bud is trying to tell you is John is sending you out the Shelby you are missing to go with the plate you have...no charge of course!LOL :)

I wonder why Shelby now uses the same number for the dash plaque and the engine ID plate. I liked the seperate numbering systems they used to use.

Although the Shelby Dodge's appeared to use separate numbering when comparing the dash to engine plaques in reality they were connected to each other.

By that I mean there is a math formula that lets Shelby know the dash number from the engine number. Carroll was so concerned about fakes/clones of his Whittier cars that they did their best to make it as difficult as they could for anyone to just take say a dash plaque and create a Shelby clone/fake.

This system was also to help the Shelby line workers get the right plaques on the right cars but because of human error this didn't always happen. The largest amount of errors (wrong plaques) occured in 1989 because for the first time Shelby Automobiles were producing two vehicles at the same time, the 1989 Shelby CSX and the 1989 Shelby Dakota.

From the research I've done thru the years my best guess is that 10% to 25% of the 1989 production had the wrong engine plaque installed. IIRC even Carrolls CSX #001 has the wrong engine plaque on it.
