My fleeting experience June 24th with a GT500

Recommended Posts

So today I went to Indianapolis to Ray Skillman Ford (same place orangesnake referred to in his recent post) to check out the Tungsten Gray color that I was worried about having a purple hue. This is an hour's drive for me...but it's the closest Ford dealer stocking that color. I was there about 20 minutes, taking pics and looking at the several Tungsten cars (not GT500s....just regular Mustangs) to see how the color looked in bright sunlight. They had an Eleanor version as well in Tungsten. When our sales person approached and asked what we were interested in and I told him I had a GT500 on order from another dealer (I tried to buy from Skillman, but they had already "sold" all of thiers (by "sold" I mean that they had a list a mile long for buyers willing to pay high dollar)). Anyway...when he knew I had one on order, he said..."well, we don't have our first one yet, but see that blue vert with the Tungsten side stripes on that car hauler?"....and I saw it leaving the dealership. I asked where it was headed, and he said Butler Ford in northern Indianapolis. I didn't have time (nor was I close enough) to get pictures...darn it.....but I did get a quick view.

So after I missed an opportunity to see it up close by about 2 minutes...I went back to taking pics of the Tungsten from many angles, waiting for the sun to come out, taking more pics, then wait for the sun to go behind clouds, taking more pics....and on and on...for 45 minutes....I finally got a GOOD look at the Tungsten. I've decided the purple hue is there...but it is faint, only visible in low light or when it's parked next to a red car (which you will see is the case in some of the pics in the below attachments).

As a result...I'm sticking with Tungsten. I was considering moving to Ebony...but today's visit gave me tummy comfort with the dark gray. They had a satin silver car right next to it...and I WISH they would have offered that color with crimson stripes and the two-tone interior...I would have snapped that up fast.

One other thing I noticed that was of interest to me. When I looked at the Tungsten BASE Mustang, it looked "darker" than the Tungsten Eleanor. After 5 minutes of scratching my head, I realized that the Eleanor's satin silver stripes made the overall car look much lighter than having the entire car be Tungsten. This made me like the color even more...the "lighter" version on the Eleanor. It's funny how so many things can play into how a color looks on a car.

Anyway, I wanted to share that I'd seen a Vista Blue GT500 from a distance...so they ARE out there being delivered. Skillman's first car is Torch Red...and they are expecting it any day now. I saw orangesnake's post about some cars at Skillman...but I'm unclear on whether those are GT500s...the pics are not posted to where I can make them big.

The owner of Ray Skillman Ford also has a "museum" of old Fords on the grounds...but it is not open to the public. My salesman may let me "look around" in there at some point in the future...even though I'm not buying a car from them. I know they have at least one '60s GT350 and one '60s GT500 in there. He also owns a Fairlane Cobra (I'd never heard of one of these until he showed my pictures) with a 428 SCJ engine in it that is undergoing a frame-off resto...he hopes to be done in 3-4 months.

Lastly, I cajoled the sales person to give me a copy of the "Frontline" magazine with info about the GT500. Evidently they get about 10-20 copies of this magazine every 2 months...and this is the June/July version. I don't have a scanner, but let me quote one thing I found interesting....

"Customers who visit your dealership to see this car will be extremely knowledgeable. They will know this vehicle better than they know themselves. In fact, your dealership may want to designate one or two Sales Consultants as the "Shelby GT500 specialists" to help ensure these customers can get their questions answered." They also reference something called "eSourcebook"...perhaps Five Oh B or isellford can shed light on what this is.

All in all, a very interesting day. After all that, then seeing the new Adam Sandler movie called "Click", then eating at a Mexican restaurant and enjoying a 32 ounce beer (my wife drove home), I'll sleep well tonight! Enjoy the pics.

Dave

Terry that was indeed my sisters car. She got the call that it came in at 5 pm and I rushed over there. Those other pictures I took were of Mustang GT's Skillman has a huge selectioin, so does Andy Mohr Ford in Plainfield. Butler For warehouse has a nice selection also. They used to be Alderman Ford for many many years 40+ , but recently sold. Actually my 05 is the last car they sold , thus the promotional Mach1 package and all the SVT bagding. Iam glad you had a great evening in Indy its a fun town.

So today I went to Indianapolis to Ray Skillman Ford...

Hey Dave, thanks for the great writeup and the pix -- super!

The eSourcebook seems to be (just doing some searches on the net) an information sourcebook designed to help the dealers do a better job of selling Ford cars by helping them properly describe all the vitals and features of each model.

Question: do you know if that Eleanor model is an actual Ford offering? or a dealer offering? Really nice Eleanor retro look -- actually, I like the front on it better than the original Eleanor in which the lower 'grille' never looked quite right to me. Anyhow, if not from Ford, is it some aftermarket turnjey deal Ford has with someone... any idea who?

...and thanks again for pix... (nice Cragar-like wheels on that silver one too ;-)

Thanks for the info on esourcebook. As for Eleanor, I don't know the answer to your question....I didn't ask. I took the pics mainly because it was the same color combo that I ordered...and also to have pics of the added on side scoops and quarter window scoops.

I can tell you this much....I asked the guy if the Eleanor had any "beef" in the engine. He said it's 350 HP...and he said you can definitely "feel" the extra power...he has driven it.

68fastback The Eleanor car at Ray Skillman is a dealership offering. The car is actually a Cervinni or a Cervanti something like that. The dealership got a good deal on all the parts to put it together. I looked at that car when I was there friday. VERY very sweet looking car.

I heard today that Andy Mohr is going to put all their cars on the internet for bid.

Actual cars. They are ordering them in with their specification. I dont know

if this scuttlebut but the beginning bid I heard they were going to start at was 140k

This is going to be fun. I will keep you up to date on that one. Andy Mohr is just minutes down the road.

:hysterical:

They might start by setting a minimum of $140k...but that doesn't mean anyone will bite. In fact, given where the market appears to be and the availability of GT500s at $15k-$20k ADM (and maybe less), you'd have to be...nevermind.

Wait a minute. Maybe they're on to something. I'm thinking I want to retire. If I sell my house for $10 million, then I can retire comfortably.

Ebay, here I come! Anyone know the eBay fees for $10 million?

I find this very hard to believe. I spoke to Andy Mohr Ford a while back and they had a list of about 15 people with deposits down and wer not taking more deposits until they knew what the allocation would be for them. I opted not to bother getting on the lised based on this.

Unless they have decided they could do better than a bunch of people paying MSRP to 10K over MSRP and were willing to really run their name into the ground locally I highly doubt anyone would make this sort of business decision.....then again I have seen some obsurd things going on relating to this car, but I really do doubt this is happening - certainly not at 140K - that has to be the GT...which by the way Capitol City has a nice silver with black stripes GT sitting in the show room - I didn't look close but it appears to be for sale as thw sticker was sitting on the dash in the front window if any one wants to buy one of those.

The conversation yesterday at our Mustang club meeting was the people on the list are out and the cars are going online auction. GT500's Time will tell if this is true.

I agree,..as much as I like the retro look,....it might be just little too busy to detract from the clesn lines of the car. But it does look mean.

Wow...way too busy. I like most of the individual components, but when they're all put together it starts to look dumb. Like something I'd might see on a 10 year old beater owned by a kid trying to make an impression.

Let's not mince words now, JR :hysterical:

But, yes... nice components but, when put together, not something I would buy. The Roush stage-3 is much cleaner looking. The Saleen stage-3 is a little too busy for me also. Of course they include hard-parts mods and cost much more, but styling-wise the Roush is nice.

I must be a died in the wool purist 'cause the aftermarket parts, though I can feel comfortable with some of the design, is rarely attractive for me to actually buy... The basic design of the GT is just soooo clean and gorgeous in an understated way. Even in '68 I opted for the version without stripes so the lines would be what you notice... but that's just this old-timer ;-)
