Motor Trend July 2006 GT500 - great news (finally!)

Recommended Posts

I agree, I love the look of the car, just not the price (read: raping gouger dealer price). It is well worth $40,000, but not worth the price the dealers are trying to get. They are ruining all the fun. I think if they were going to get $50-60,000 for the car, it should be about 800lbs lighter, and a little better on the interior. I would still love to get one, but if I can get a C-6 vette for $44,000, take off my family discount, and not get raped by the dealer, that sounds like a better deal for me. I like the look of shelby and the vette, I am partial to the Mustang because it was born on my birthday, just 11 years before me. Anyone find a dealer not raping, by that I mean MSRP price at least, not a penny above.

Ya know.....it all boils down to this: What do YOU want? If you want a Shelby and want it now, pay the price to play. If you don't...don't. But, comparisons to a Corvette are insane. Want to know why the Shelby costs so much? Try this experiment- Go by a major Chevy dealer and see how many Vettes are on the lot (I counted 23 at a dealer in north suburban Chicago last Saturday). Now, go do the same at a Ford dealer, looking for Shelbys. See? Pretty simple, huh? Caviar isn't expensive because it tastes so friggin' great....it's expensive because it's hard to get.

BJ -

Yeah, but on the other hand, I won't buy something just because it's rare and expensive. No caviar for me. But some people will buy it just because they can and others can't, no matter how it tastes. Sad but true. I suspect there will be at least a few who buy the GT500 just to say they bought a $60K (or fill in the blank) hard-to-get Mustang. Like you say, buy what YOU want for YOUR reasons. Or pay what YOU want to pay. Unfortunately, most can't buy what the GT500 for what they want to pay for it right now. Ragging on others for paying what they want to pay to get what they want when they want to get it is wasted effort. Plenty of Vettes around, people should feel free to make that choice without blowback on others who don't make that choice.

As for me, I'm with you, BJ. Red Rocks! Priority Code One for mine - must mean next week.

First - this is going to be a long one so sorry up front.

I just finished reading through a lot of non-sense not related to why I visit this site and was happy to see the last post back to an issue at hand about pricing for this car not one of the other things that don't belong. I went over to one of the local dealers I am working with last night and they too are suddenly talking about 20K over MSRP. I told them I would wait it out - I want the car but not over MSRP. I am able to get the "X" plan pricing but have no problem not using that to get a Shelby but above MSRP I won't do. If MSRP was 65K I would probably pay that but it's not and I have decided that is where I will draw the line. I will be speaking to my regular sales lady today to find out if she can work with me now or if I need to hold off a while which I hope I don't but it is what it is.

I read the Hot Rod article on the Shelby and they had a good message....It was Fast, powerful, and fun. They didn't get too much into the detaisl admitting it was an early version but the point story was an upbeat one. So far I believe only the Motor Trend group has had a model that is on the level with the product actually going out to the public and I like the numbers I see there. A small amount of aftermarket work and this car has the potential to be a BEAST! Not to mention if it is like my current 05 I fit into it comfortably at 6'5" and 285 pounds which is the reason I love Mustangs. I have had them since my first car a 1971 Mach 1 that I blew the rear main seal on and locked the engine doing things I probably shouldn't have in Chicago, but I bought the thing for $500 and had a blast with it until it was trashed. I then moved down to a 1978 Mustang II which is a laugh but let me tell you this thing had a V8 302 and not much mass and it would chirp the tires at 80MPH if you kicked it....and it was an auto. Unfortunately the gas needle moved as fast as the speedo but some great memories in that ride too - sold to help pay for my education which may not be evident by my typos and spelling but you guys should get the point. Currently I have an 05 vert that I bough used with 14K miles on it this spring for my wife and find myself in it more than her with our son in his car seat. I can take him along at 2 yrs old which I can not do on my Harley so I take the stang all over on weekends with him....I can still fit my wife (expecting #2 in Oct.) in the stang and dog too. I admit I need the SUV for all 3 dogs and a trip to MI for a long week end though.

In any case the point of this long e-mail is the Shelby for me is not about "SHELBY" on the back of the car although I like that too. It is kind of like returning to a car that I have great memories of. A car that stock is nasty and with a little work becomes a BEAST! I like the way Mustangs drive, look, and the ability to modify them with not too much effort (comparitively speaking). I like that it is a fast car that is sporty and fun to drive and that I fit in comfortably at my size and can take my kid(s), and a dog.....and I guess the wife too at times. The more I think about the more I really want this car so here is my dilema:

I refuse to pay 20K over the price tag (or any other amount) based on principal. It's like going to buy an candy bar and since you are really hungry they say it costs $20 not the sticker price of 99 cents. I will just be hungry longer. I can buy a GT and get X plan pricing and the color etc. that I want. The money I save could be used for the upgrades to essentially create a Shelby or better. I saw a GT coupe last nite with a sticker of under 29K. I want a vert but even then under 35K.....At MSRP I want the Shelby and I could easily justify the extra $ to get it. If the MSRP was 65K it may be a tough pill to swallow but I could at least say this is what it costs and then try to decide if I wanted it that badly, but the cost is not that so I feel like I only need to decide if I want it at the cost (which I do) and if I cannot get it there I will not get it....I will get a GT Vert and modify it and be almost as happy. My point is I like this car and while I would change some things over all it is light years ahead of a 35K GT. Has anyone looked at the cost of modifying a GT to get it into the performace area of a Shelby? There is a lot out there that could do it and if MSRP or better does not become a reality I will go this route i think unless someone can tell me a good reason not to. I am not foolish enough to buy this or any other car as an investment. i want to drive and have fun in the car and if one day it is worth what I pay the day I drive out of the lot great but we all know (I hope) that from an investment perspective cars are not as a rule good ones.

Sooooo (again sorry for the long post) but what would it take to make a GT at or above a Shelby from a performance level and outside of the name Shelby why would this not be as good of an option if they Shelby remains something you can not get for the price on the sticker? The nice thing is i can wait and see the GT is not going anywhere.

Thanks all and let's try to at least stay car related, opinions can very, but there are other places for the non car related opinions.

hey yamaha, do you own a scooter or something bigger. This site is for gt500 lovers.

Take my advise, try to expand your paper route and let those mature enough and with the means to buy a new Shelby engage in some intelligent discussions. BYE BYE

Back on topic. Let's leave our friends up north, and predilections about women, out of this. We all have preferences & opinions.

This is great news, and I suspect that with a pair of slicks, this thing will rocket through the quarter. 18+ mpg is great for such a powerful car. My '69 500 got high 12 mpg, downhill, with a draft! :hysterical: Can't wait to see these on the street!!!!! :lurk:

Thanks for attempting to bring this thread back on topic Crispy!!!

Despite the efforts to create havoc, in our Shelby sanctuary.

One-on-one Canadians are just as tough my friend,

we just don't feel the need to "talk" about it. So, have a Molson

Canadian and enjoy!!!

Ohhh, So scared, ban me. Who cares. If I was so interested in getting you back I would just start a new screen name. Why bother playing all the games. And by the way, we get bashed all the time by everyone as Americans. Comes with the territory when you are a world power. Canada would not know anything about that. If you guys were not leeching off of us, you would be just like Mexico. Name one exported Canadien company besides Tim Hortons? You have your own automobile company? Don't think so. This forum was started in the United States. We have freedom of speech. I have seen others post porno material and swear left and right and not get edited or banned, so bend over and take it. I did not say anything that does not fall into the freedom of speech category. I am free to have my opinion, and you are free to not like it. That is why this (USA) is a great country. We are not so fond of all the gay stuff like you guys in Canada either, another reason why I am glad I don't live in Canada. Every state that had that gay issue on the ballot voted it down. Later

You know? This Guy just knows a wee bit too much, about Canada, to not be Canadian. I'm calling his Bluff and saying he's an American Poser.

There's a 'Poster' on svtperformance.com who sounds a lot like this Guy. He claims to be a Canadian that's apparently lived and worked in the US. Now that he's back in Canada all he does is whine about how much income tax he has to pay, medicare, dollar conversion, etc, etc,..... I think he got kicked out of the States for doing something illegal. It's too bad he found this site. He's an annoying A :censored: hole.

I was going to wipe out your entire post but I have a better idea.

I'll quote you first and then I'll suggest you do your homework before shooting your mouth off.

For the record it's Americans such as yourself that get slammed not in general.

This took me 30 seconds to find. You may want to try it. It's called research.

The McLaughlin family will forever be remembered in Oshawa as long as General Motors, their pride and joy, remains in Oshawa. Robert McLaughlin was the founder of the McLaughlin Carriage Co. in 1869 which would eventually lead to his son R.S. McLaughlin beginning the motor revolution in Oshawa with the cLaughlin Motor Car Co. in 1907 and to the founding of General Motors Canada in 1918. Another of Robert’s sons, John J. McLaughlin created Canada Dry Ltd., another product well known throughout North America.

Furthermore, (if you have trouble with this word it's in the dictionary, you know the big book without pictures) if you're so pro American what are you doing riding a Yamaha? Shouldn't you be riding a Harley or a Buell?

rpretzel, I am one who likes to drive the car's vs the let them sit in garage syndrome. This way I can have twice the fun driving but yet still keep the miles down. Have a very young family and am already making plans for a few trips this summer.

It just takes a lot of hard work to track down a good deal. I have found some smokin' deals on 3 more cars. As soon as I get confirmation on these 2 with build date will share the others and how I found them.

I had to sacrafice BIG TIME by selling off my Muscle Car Collection to do this. My last Mustang was a 1969 Mach1 Drag Pack 4spd car. Have not owned a Mustang newer than my 1970 Boss.

I need to sell my 70 Boss also, as soon as I get it put together. BUT not until I can do a few tests between them and a great photo op.

I'm glad you are a driver. It really hurts when cars like this never see the light of day. My hat is off to you for being able to get two, although it looks like you are giving up some sweet toys. I got a decent deal on mine, but it sounds like you hit the jackpot. Congrats!

QUOTE(Five Oh B @ May 30 2006, 08:16 PM) 16470[/snapback]

A lot of bad things have been said following the R&T, C&D, and Hot Rod articles about the GT500's performance, so in my mailbox today was the welcome sight of Motor Trend's July 2006 issue with almost 3,500 miles driven in a GT500 to FULLY evaluate this car. All the normal drag tests, handling tests, braking tests, plus a top-speed test!

You all can read the article for yourself, but here's the major test results...

  • 0-60 mph 4.5 seconds.
  • 0-100 mph in 9.6 seconds.
  • 1/4 mile in 12.7 seconds at 116 mph.
  • Standing mile in 33.2 seconds at 150.2 mph.
  • Top speed (governor limited - yuck!) at 157.5 mph.
  • Skid pad 0.92 g's.
  • Braking, 60-0 mph in 110 ft.
  • Motor Trend's fuel economy during 3500 miles of 18.4 mpg.

The 116 mph trap speed for the 1/4 mile is awesome and confirms that this car makes at least 500 hp. By my calculations (hp is a function of a known mass moved a known distance in a known time), the Motor Trend GT500 makes about 440 rwhp, which is about 520 hp at the crankshaft.

Motor Trend also compared the GT500 against the Pontiac GTO and Charger SRT-8 and summed it up as follows:

"Ford has hit the sweet spot with the new Shelby GT500. Meet the new benchmark for affordable American performance cars." "No one in the world builds a car this charismatic, this accomplished, with this much performance for the money. The greatest Mustang ever? No question.

Could anyone tell me why they dont offer hood and deck stripes on the convertible

My point is some of you Ford guys have blinders on, just like you did not mention the heavy as a tank iron block vs the aluminum on that weighs much less from Chevy.

I used to work on tanks....and they weigh significantly more than the Ford 5.4L. I just love these people that sensationalize and exaggerate. I've told my wife a billion times not to exaggerate. :hysterical:

I thought you folks might enjoy these pictures being that we Ford people are always open to learning and seeing what is going on around us. Doesnt matter if its ForD , ChevY , or MoPaR. The first picture is the view they will all enjoy.
