Recommended Posts

HI:

There is a 1970 hardtop for sale locally.

It is in good shape, 27,000 miles. Needs paint and interior work. Engine is OK but needs detailing.

What do you think it is worth???

I just sold a nice 70 gt350 4sp+a/c car.

If it needs paint and other work $70K or maybe $75k if it is a 4 sp+ air car.

I saw the car.

It was rust-proofed and all the Shelby serial plates were missing.

He wanted $65,000.00

It needed $20,000.00 worth of work to bring it to my standards.

No Sale.

69/70 Shelby's don't have a separate Shelby serial number plate like the 65 to 68 cars had. the Ford VIN includes the Shelby identifier and the production number. Example for a 69 GT500 9FO2R48XXXX

9=1969 MODEL YEAR

F=BUILT AT DEARBORN

02=BODY STYLE 02=2 DOOR FASTBACK 03=2DOOR CONVERTIBLE

R=428-4V COBRA JET RAM AIR (FOR A GT350 THIS WOULD BE 'M' FOR 351-4V ENGINE)

48=SHELBY DESIGNATION (48 WAS NOT USED FOR ANY OTHER FORD VEHICLE)

XXXX=THE LAST FOUR NUMBERS OF THE SERIAL NUMBER.

1970 Shelby's were left over 69's a new VIN plate was installed on the dash and the 9 was changed to a 0 designating 1970.

IF you are not aware the VIN is also stamped the left forward inner fender apron usually covered by the fender flange. This number should

match the the VIN plate on the dash. The exception is a 1970 Shelby which will start with 9 because the car started out in production as a 1969. Only on the dash VIN plate and the door data plate or label was the 9 changed to a 0. If ford had tried to alter the inner fender VIN it would have looked like someone had tried to alter the VIN.

The removed dash VIN on 1970 Shelby's were handed over to the FBI to be destroyed.

So that's how to Identify a 69/70 Shelby.

Good luck with the car if you decide to buy it.

Even at $80,000 to $90,000 total value, car + cost of repairs or restoration the price + repairs is right in the ball park for a 69/70 GT350.
