3.31 To 3.73 Gear Change????

Recommended Posts

I did the swap from 3.31 to 3.73 during my SS upgrade. Bottom line, sitting in traffic sucks, but launching sure feels good. It feels like I have to shift more often, but at the same time I am reaching speeds faster also.

I have a set of Michelin AS3 all season tires on mine. As long as I am paying attention, I don't have any tire squealing driving around town. On the other hand, I can really get those tires spinning if I want to with incredible ease.

What was everyones break-in procedure for their new gears after install?

As SAI told me. Gentle driving. No boost and no serious pulls. 25 miles then a full cool down. 25 miles then a full cool down. 25 miles then a full cool down. Then, 225 miles with non-spirited driving. No boost and no serious pulls. Thats it.

Thanks for the advice. Did about 25 miles, cooled down, another 25 miles, cooled down, 10 miles cooled, and another 10 miles, cooled. Hoping to get another 150-200 miles on the gears, then let it rip. If they're not ready then, they never will be!

Have any of you had an issue with whining after you changed gears?

The shop I went to guaranteed me that I would hear a whining noise if I had him change gears ( I have not made the change yet ).

I have a 2014 GT500 with the stock 3:31's and I do not have any whining noise.

Any info on actual experiences would be greatly appreciated.--Thanks.

Truth in advertising: I've got a set of 3.73s on the shelf that I'm thinking about installing, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I've logged at least 25 hard launches and I have ZERO whine.

First, go to a different shop. Guaranteeing whine tells me they're not confident in their own skills, so you shouldn't be either.

Second, I know several folks who've swapped and there are a plethora of threads on the topic...

Everyone I know and most I recall reading report no noise until after a few hard launches.

Bottom line: Assuming the shop knows what they're doing, whining is NOT normal until/unless you launch hard. It is, however, relatively common following hard launches.

I followed instructions from SAI on the gear break in procedure. I never drag race my car, did maybe 4-5 tire squeals for onlookers, but no major launches.

I never heard any gear whine over the first 18 months after doing the swap to 3.73s. I had to replace 2 leaky pinion seals over that time, and eventually my pinion disintegrated while driving 45mph in 4th gear. Make sure you get quality parts, the cheap ones definitely can't handle the high hp.

I have had a stock 2011white GT500 with track pack wich came with a 3.73 and it was perfect; I could start rolling without touching the gas. On my stock2014 GT500 (except for Corsa exhaust - sound great! and K&N filter), I stall or spin the tires all the time and on 1/8th mile runs, the car almost stalls when I have slicks on because of the clutch protection programming.

Result: my 2014 is not a lot faster than my 2011 on 1/8th mile and 1/4 mile runs....Also, I read the entire thread but nobody mentionned that the 13 and 14 do not have the same 1st and second gear ratios than the previous models; this makes the final gear ration even taller leading to a less than friendly trafic driving machine. So next week I am going at my Ford dealer and going for the 3.73. I do a lot of highway driving but the RPM is low at 80 MPH that I don't think the fuel consumption difference will be significant. I also think the new gears will be less hard on the transmission and clutch and maybe will lessen the clutch protection problem. I also don't think the car will spin more on takeoff (it will be a different story on the other gears however) as I will still have a lower final ratio than I used to have on my 2011 because of the first gear ratio difference.

Black on black 2014 convertible.

I did make the change for a 3.73 on my 2014 shelby gt500! The car drives better now. The change is good but not that radical. I am glad I did the change but I think if I did not have so much highway driving I would have gone with 4.10 gears.

The problem I have is that before doing the swap, I asked my Ford SVT dealer if he was sure he could adjust the speedometer after the gear swapa and he said yes no problem we did a lot of them! I said you are sure? When I went to get my car back, he said everything was programmed and speedo calibrated. Well guess what? It did not work! Now when I go 75 MPH the speedo displays 84 MPH....Mileage also adds up 12% faster than before. Ford dealer says he can't fix this. They say the only way to fix this is to use an outside programmer wich would void my extended warranty wich ends in december 2020! So 1500 CAD$ later I am stuck with an unperfect car that drives better than before but has false information in the dash...Very disapointing experience form a SVT dealer who is supposedly a specialist with our vehicles....This is my second Shelby and might be my last unfortunately....Poor poor product knowledge by the dealer....

Other info: RPM in 6th gear @ 75 MPH (GPS) before gear change: 1500 RPM, with 3.73: 1750 RPM. so highway fuel consumption should go up by about 12% (from 22 MPG US to 19,6)  but I was not able to calculate it precisely because now my mileage is inaccurate....

Bring it back to the dealer. It's a simple adjustment with a Ford ProCal tuner. Not sure what happened there or how it affects the warranty. Find a new dealer if they're not even competent enough to simply adjust the gear ratio computer setting!

Well technically a portion of your drive-line warranty was voided when the 3.73 gears were installed so no reason to stop now.

You will need to go with an aftermarket calibrator tool that is needed when tire and/or gear changes are made or better yet go get a custom tune for your Shelby that will come with a tuner tool.

As you found out Ford dealerships can not make the change, all they can do is put the stock configuration onto the car.

I agree. the 14 gt500 is definitely a beast. I've just received my parts from Evolution ( off road H pipe, jlt big air, oval throttle body and sctx4 with a custom tune). Should be around 800 hp when done I'm thinking. I think 3:73 gears would be a waste as you would be battling wheel spin constantly and thus your acceleration would suffer. I put 3:73 in my 89 5.0 along with some other minor changes and that was perfect. It spins all day long.

Hi Dave,

I know this is an old post, but I just came across your post here. The parts you mentioned above, is this all you had done? Did you make close to 800 rwhp? Interested to know. Did you go with 3:73's afterall? Are you happy with them?
