New project....Dad wrecked Saleen for the 4th time!!!

Recommended Posts

I thought you all would get a kick out of this...

I built a Saleen Cobra for my dad in 2002. 610 HP Vortech Supercharged with a built, forged DOHC 4.6. Car had 14K miles and was mint top to bottom. As most of you know, I have a Mustang shop and do all sorts of wild projects and ship them all around the world. This one was shipped to my 65 year old father who is a doctor in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. With in 1 month of getting the car he wrecked it..did $18K in damage and was fixed by his insurance company...he has since wrecked it 3 more times!! This last one however, totalled the car and paid off by his insurance. He kept trying to have body shops repair the car and after 6 turned him down, he told them...no worry..I'll just send it to my son down in Palm Springs...he'll fix it!!! He told me the damage was" just a fender, door, and a little bit of paint...yea right dad!!! Needless to say, I told him to just scrap the car and get a GT500 like mine, but he insists he loves this body style. So, I am now going to transfer all the parts that are salvageable to a donor 95 Cobra with 13K miles that was stripped that I have owned for 10 years that is just sitting in the shop and build him a new car. This one will be Torch Red...enjoy the pics..if there is enough interest in this thread I will keep posting pics of the progress over the next few months as we do the build in between other projects....

he has a Lincoln LSE I built for him too..also yellow...it is way less HP and he has wrecked it 2X...I think I need to put a cage in the Saleen this time!! If it weren't for the subframe connectors, there is no doubt in my mind that the accident would have crushed his girlfriend...it crushed all the way to the connector and crunched the seat up to that point too..not to mention buckled the roof and broke the dash in 3 parts...

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just get him a Driver? If he pitches a fit, get him a HOT Female Driver............... :shift:

Talk about role reversal!!!! Dad, we gotta have a talk. I hate when fathers just don't listen. LOL Maybe you should talk to Stalwart. Stewart collects military vehicles, maybe he could hook you up with a tank for your Dad.

Good luck

The sad thing is he's owned more high performance cars that I can count over the years! Other than a couple cracked ribs and bruises him and his girlfriend were okay and walked right away. One of his complaints while I was building the car was the sub-frame connectors, he thought it would ride to harsh but I went ahead and installed them anyway! Lucky for his girlfriend!!! As you can see in the pictures the car was crushed up to the sub-frame connectors and ripped the welds. A must have upgrade for any 94-04 Mustang. Anytime a customer does want power adders, I don't give them the option I insist on it.

Let's see.......

You're an adult.

Dad is obviously an "older" adult.

Older, male adult with.....

a. Girlfriend

b. Fast car in screaming yellow cloak

equals

Trouble.

Two cheaper ways to help dad are......

a. Tell him to buy a 'Vette and get it out of his system (gold chains optional)*

b. Tell him you can get Viagra online and they'll ship it to your home so you don't have to drive on public roads.

(* I get to say this because I'm a) over 50 and B) half Italian)

Just trying to help a brother here.

Hi Alex,

This is some story.

Has your Dad been to driving school? Bob Bondurant has saved me a lot of $ over the years.

Please keep us posted on the build of the replacement car.

Regards,

Michael

I so want to hold my feelings in but...I just hope he keeps being lucky! But I would urge him, if he's going to drive recklessly, he do it alone next time. Looking at the passenger door his girlfriend is VERY lucky. I just don't know how I would feel if my dad was killed in a car I built for him that he really shouldn't be driving. As people age their eyesight and reflexes deteriorate. His reaction time and mental quickness, Doctor or not, are impacted. He's trying to capture or hang on to the old days of careless youth only today his carelessness may cost someone their life.

I pray it never happens but I would think twice before I enabled him anymore. It's not going to stop him from going out and buying something himself but he's an adult even if he doesn't always act like one.

Good luck!

-Jeff
