Obama and GUNS

I am looking for some advise with regards to purchasing a hand gun. This will be my first hand gun and I am looking for a .45 caliber. Do any of you own a Kimber, Glock, SIG ? I can spend $1,000.00 so share your experience.

Thanks

So did you ever get your question answered or did it get lost in the crap?

You can't go wrong with the XD (my favorite) SIG, Glock or Kimber and maybe a Taurus. With 1K you could probably buy two Taurus's or 1 3/4 XD's. Find a range somewhere and test fire to see what you like best.

I know my next purchase for me will be the Taurus Judge Magnum. My wife will carry a 38 special.

Also depends if you are looking for home protection or you want to carry concealed. Small carry .45's are very popular right now and if you want a 3" barrel in a 1911 style, they're hard to find. I've been looking for a Kimber Ultra Carry II with night sights and laser grips for weeks and can't find one. The wait time from Kimber is three to six months. You can pick up a small Glock in .45 just about anywhere though.

Is it the best for your home defense scenario. Not necessarily. It fires the 45 LC which is an antiquated cartridge and to my knowledge there are no makers of premium hollow points for the weapon.

I dont know about a Judge for home D but they do make +P jacketed hollow points and they are 200- 260 grains. Midway USA has em. 300+grains for flat nose +P rounds. Thats a big piece of lead. .45 LC put a lotta men in the ground, I wouldnt underestimate it. I think the Judge is bringing a resurgance of the round, they seem to be making more than Cowboy rounds now for them.

my 2 cents

There are many good brands of guns and calibers. To me, for self defense purposes, it is all in how they fit in your hand and you can "get on" something fast. I have many guns that I love, but they just don't fit me right and therefore they take a little more time to aim and get a good shot than others. (Don't do the following with a loaded gun) I have found the best way to find out what gun works best for you is to have the gun at your side, pick an object (such as a clock) and look at it closely, then close your eyes, with your eyes closed point the at the object, open your eyes and look through the sights. If your not where you should be, then that gun is not right for you. For me, that happens to be a 1911 and a H&K USP. Those may not be the ones that work for you. I can't do that with my Glock and many of my other guns but that doesn't mean that they are bad guns they just don't work for me they may for you. There are many other guns in my collection that I wish would work for me but they will not (at least in a self defense situation). For self defensive purposes, aiming a gun should be as easy as pointing your finger; if it's not - try something else. Things happen fast in these situations and feel as natural as pointing a finger.

I came close to buying a little 45/.410 pistol today. Simple double barrel design and the total length is about 6" total. Neat little gun but very simple. No eject feature and you have to actually flip the hammer to the left or right to change to the other barrel. It would be great for a snake charmer, to have in your pocket while working the field or to toss in a tackle box but I passed on it.

They also had a 22-45/410 over and under pistol. .22 LR on top and 45/410 on bottom. Same simple design.

$165 at a local pawn shop hence my reasoning for passing.

If this is your first hand gun consider a high quality revolver. It is safer to learn on the revolver. Unless you intend to practice on a regular basis a semi auto may not be for you. The revolver is more reliable, especially for the inexperienced. Consider a Smith, Colt, or Ruger in 357 and shoot 38 spl or 38+P. It is all about shot placement. A big bullet that misses is just that, a miss.

I have a question for the gun-knowledgable - I own a couple of very old Smith & Wesson guns that my grandfather gave to me. One is a 44 Special, and the other a 38 with a pearl handle. Another is a Colt 22. They are all in excess of 75 years old I'm guessing. Anyway, is there a website on which one can find out more about old guns? I'd like to at least find out exactly how old these guns are. What do you suggest?

Bob, call 1-800-331-0852. Ask for Jeff Whitehouse. He works 12 noon till 8 PM EST. That is the number for S&W. Be prepared to give him the serial numbers on the S&W pistols. I don't know if there is a number for Colt but you could write a letter. BTW it is now Colt's Firearms, no longer Colt.

Let us know what they say.

69dejavue, I sent you a PM this morning.

I did get my information off the guns:

44 S&W Special - no. 54xxx

38 S&W Special - no. 86xxx

I also have a Colt Automatic Cal. 22 Long Rifle - no. 40xxx. This one is really interesting because my Uncle gave it to me when I was a kid down in Florida. It was manufactured in Hartford CT, which is now where I work!! I was involved in a construction project recently about a block away from the old abandoned Colt factory where the gun was made. It's come full circle!

I got this in an Email today:

Subject: The Gun Ban list is out.

Here it is folks, and it is bad news. The framework for legislation is always laid, and the Democrats have the votes to pass anything they want to impose upon us. They really do not believe you need anything more than a brick to defend your home and family. Look at the list and see how many you own. Remember, it is registration, then confiscation.

It has happened in the UK, in Australia, in Europe, in China, and what they have found is that for some reason the criminals do not turn in their weapons, but will know that you did. Please send this to everyone you can.

It will come up for a vote, and it might even be a secret vote if Madame Pelosi has her way, and then it will be a done deal. ....thanks to Colonel Rus...Hal.

Right to own a gun Remember, The first step in establishing a dictatorship is to disarm the citizens.

Subject: Gun Law Update by Alan Korwin, Democrats have already leaked a gun-ban list. Forward or send to every gun owner you know...Gun Law Update by Alan Korwin, Author Gun Laws of America. Jan. 5, 2008. Gun-ban list proposed. Slipping below the radar (or under the short-term memory cap), the Democrats have already leaked a gun-ban list, even under the Bush administration when they knew full well it had no chance of passage (HR 1022, 110th Congress) It serves as a framework for the new list the Brady's plan to introduce shortly. I have an outline of the Brady's current plans and targets of opportunity, It's horrific. They're going after the courts, regulatory agencies, firearms dealers and statutes in an all out effort to restrict we the people. They've made little mention of criminals. Now more than ever, attention to the entire Bill of Rights is critical. Gun bans will impact our freedoms under search and seizure, due process, confiscated property, states' rights, free speech, right to assemble and more, in addition to the Second Amendment. The Democrats current gun-ban-list proposal (final list will be worse):

Attorney General gets carte blanche to ban guns at will:

Under the proposal, the U.S. Attorney General can add any "semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General." Note that Obama's pick for this office (Eric Holder, confirmation hearing set for Jan. 15) wrote a brief in the Heller case supporting the position that you have no right to have a working firearm in your own home.

In making this determination, the bill says, "there shall be a rebuttable presumption that a firearm procured for use by the United States military or any federal law enforcement agency is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, and a firearm shall not be determined to be particularly suitable for sporting purposes solely because the firearm is suitable for use in a sporting event." In plain English this means that ANY firearm ever obtained by federal officers or the military is not suitable for the public.

The last part is particularly clever, stating that a firearm doesn't have a sporting purpose just because it can be used for sporting purpose -- is that devious or what? And of course, "sporting purpose" is a rights infringement with no constitutional or historical support whatsoever, invented by domestic enemies of the right to keep and bear arms to further their cause of disarming the innocent.

Respectfully submitted, Alan Korwin, Author Gun Laws of America http://www.gunlaws.com/gloa.htm <http://www.gunlaws.com/gloa.htm>

There is no mention of sporting rifles in the second amendment. Where are our liberal friends on this site that told us this would not happen. Obama has only been in office less than 10 weeks. Can you imagine what else will happen.

Our liberal friends will tell us that this ISN'T happening, while it happens....

You can still have the M-1 Garand in 30.06 so buy it now. YOu can also have the 10 shot SKS because it does not have a detachable magazine. Again, where are the liberals on this site that always tell us how wonderful socialism will be???????

We need for a state to secede. Then we can move there and be happy. I suggest TX and or TN. Problem is in 10 years we will have to give the blue states a bail out.

Just went to the gun show yesterday here in Richmond. Took over twenty minutes to get in as the line was out to the parking lot. It's like a black Friday sale at every show I've been to since the election. Maybe Barry and Holder should announce that they are going to outlaw all American gasoline powered automobiles and they wouldn't have to decide who's qualified to run GM. What a freaking joke. Washington telling GM how to run a business after they put us into this mess. Can anyone come up with one thing that D.C. has run efficiently and made profitable? Oh wait... there is one thing. The IRS. Yeah they make sure to get the money so they could stuff their pockets and spend spend spend. Barry preaches fiscal responsibility yet he's pulled out our wallets starting the day after taking office and hasn't put them away yet. All I can say is

GATHER WEAPONS AND AMMO or else

I bought a new gun at the gun show yesterday. I traded my M&P 45 for a Savage Model 12 in .308. I also got a 10 x 40 scope.

Sounds like that would make a good sniper rifle Doc...What brand is the scope ?

Has anyone seen any outrage over the news released yesterday that Fannie and Freddie are giving out 200 million in bonuses? The two quazi government entities that are partly responsible for the mess we're in? I don't see Barney or Chris demanding a list of names of all those recipients so Acorn can go to their homes and threaten their families with bodily harm.
