Straight Pies on SGT

Recommended Posts

Got bored today and pulled the mufflers off to see what the SGT sounds like with straight pipes.

Not the best recording (in fact kind of embarassing) as I exceded the SPL's of the ZEN mic but you get the idea.

It's not nearly as loud as I though. A set of straight pipes would sound sweet IMO!

One is a raw recoding with compression to try and control the distortion.

The second is mastered with a little stereo. I couldn't help myself.

EDIT: I can't stand it. I'm going to try and get a better recording before I put the mufflers back on but this time it's in the barn instead of out in the open. Be back later.

2nd recording at 10' and 12' behind car. A little better -

I'm going to put my mufflers back on now.....

BTW...does your wife know you are out in the barn tearing up her car??? ;) :P

Actually she is the one that started this. My wonderful bride made the comment " I wish it was a little louder" (after 7 years she still has not learned to be careful what she asks for) and when she heard what it sounded like, she got wide eyed and really liked the sound. Problem is she is afraid there will be too much drone in the car. Of course the pipes dump right at the axle so when she got in a rolled the windows up then reved to 3000 RPM's, she said it was "headache level". Now with pipes going out the rear, who knows. I do think I'm going to go old school on the car now after hearing it and drop in some 24" packs with chrome tips.

Stumpbreaker- I mean dress up the car, do some retro stuff, but you are disceting this $45K car to the max. I hope it is still in 1 piece by the end of the year! You need to have the Tim Allen primortial grunt " more power, louder engine etc...Wow I don't know what to say but I am glad its you doing that to your car and not mine!

You have the big kahonas because I would never do what your doing, not that it is a bad thing I just have never seen someone do it this way. Your way.

Stump, I think I found a new business for you. Making audio tapes for people who have yet to receive their cars. Send Matt one first, my wife needs one for her mini van. This could be your calling and it will help you save for your S/C option. You'll make a bundle. LOL

I see lots of room for improvement. Tell you what, break out your checkbook now and I'll sell you my leftovers as I upgrade.

Enjoy following....

Stumpbreaker- Well I am not a follower I just love the way the car is stock, except for an SC of course. I am sorry for any misconceived notions about you and your way doing things, no harm no foul I would say. Your doing it "your way" just like Frank did. B)

LOL, I hold no ill-will against anyone and I totally respect the purist idea of the car and can understand why one would want to keep it that way. I also resepct and welcome constructive criticism as it gives me different ideas or causes me to look at something I might have overlooked.

Such as I don't think anyone has noticed - as I JUST noticed as I'm typing this - that in the title I spelled pipes without the second "P". :o

Even I'm against straight pies on a Shelby!! :)

Sounds good Stump but one thing I will caution you about. I went the straight pipe route on my 96 model and had lots of popping on deceleration, especially when down shifting. It wasn't too bad but it definately took away from the great sound of accelerating.

Yeah, I did here a little of the same effect you're talking about although it's not prevalent on the recording. I think the cats are absorbing a lot.
