Grabber
They said my input shaft had abnormal wear because of corrosion and not being lubed at the factory. They also said that the input shaft was not hardened enough and that was, I guess, part of the problem. Owen, I talked to Tremec and they looked all the internal part numbers and revision dates for me. I spent 1/2 hour on the phone with a gentleman. There is only 2 input shaft changes: 1. It's highly polished now. 2. The dimension between the splines increased a fuzz. He called it the pin diameter, and said the increase was 10 thousandths split between the 26 splines. He said that it was just a "spec" change. He said that Ford had them change the spec to the "high" end of the spec. The part number for the input shaft is not sold yet. In fact no parts were available at all for our transmissions. He said that typically tranny parts are available 2 years after the first production run. That would be in 2 months. 70SCJ
My baby goes in Monday for her tranny, clutch and flywheel replacement along with a new KR shifter. Thanks to all, esp Grabber, for all the info in this thread. It has been extremely helpful in identifying this potentially expensive problem before most warranties run out. Is there a count on how many have had the problem diagnosed and what is being done about it? Perhaps a poll question?
billf65
my tranny and flywheel have been in for a couple of weeks now, and the clutch just showed up this week. Will all go in next week hopefully, but have to get it out of their body shop first (just a small repair) :happy feet: Did you receive the nickel plated hub unit or has anyone recieved this unit from ford parts? KCMO-GT500
Did you receive the nickel plated hub unit or has anyone recieved this unit from ford parts? It's not available yet, although the part number has been assigned. It also looks like the supply of original ones is starting to slow down, so I just went ahead and had him get one while still easy to obtain. I do not think that the nickel plated one is essential for the fix.

sharabi
I know i have the new transmission and that its supposed to get the dreaded problem solved. However 1st to 2d , and while you are on second the sound is different than when you shift to third...i would describe it like the marbles in my pocket when i was a kid. No grind ..No clutch Hiss..The gates are well defined and rowing through the gears is a breeze..But that sound on a third generation trans..? After you guys had the trans replaced is the sound of 1st, 2d, 3d....the same? What gives? BTW it is different than what grabber had on the video he taped regarding the CSC bearing sound. The clutch pedal feel and travel feel different (kinda worried about that) A very positive feel going in each gear. Not spungy at all. Not a clunk, not a grind, just bang its in gear. I'm sure part of it is the shortened throw that I'm not used to. I'll try and put a few more miles on and report back.

Called the dealer this am. They said it should work itself out and if not bring it back in and they would hook up vacuum pump. Not sure I believe that. Once air is in the system I would think it would stay. I'll just wait a few days and take it back in. Edited March 27, 2008 by 70SCJ
Grabber
I put 75 miles on my new tranny today. The weather finally broke and I drove her to work today. Man it feels nice. No problems so far. I have about 220 miles on the new tranny now. The new FRPP shifter I had put in is so sweet. Man I enjoy this car. :happy feet:

BadCat
Get well soon ! yea; I figured I had better get it scheduled; the zone rep called them today asking if he could have my new tranny for another dealer's customer who needs a transplant. Luckily, my parts manager told him to go elsewhere

His 2nd gear is out too. It seems they ran out of trannys.
BadCat
that sucks; if I didn't know I would have some irritation from my dealer I would go ahead and offer up my tranny since mine still runs pretty much ok.

I sure would applicate any help from anyone, May 30th is a long wait after having the car sit all winter. At this point I am looking into having my car flatbedded back to my house until a tranny does become available. My car has been sitting outside in the spring PA rains cause they don't have space to keep it inside.

They put a person on investigating the situation. they call the dealer to get the lowdown and part number, and then they call the parts supplier and then they call you. It takes 3 days, but it's worth a try if you feel you are being given the run around. Has your parts guy checked into the issue on getting a tranny? m81mclaren
Well, 5K on the clock now and it's at the dealer getting the clutch issue looked at. I have a 2nd gear grind on occasion and notchiness that makes it a chore to drive. From my original post the day I got her I have had concerns. They have only gotten worse. I hope the dealer will handle this in a way that gets the car fixed. A new tranny/clutch/flywheel (and good CSC!) would get me back to the happiness I had on first arrival. PM message to you Grabber. The Service manager has contacted the rep who was the one looking for which transmissions are available out there. Things are moving along much better now that the service manager has taken this over directly so I don't feel I am being given the run around or lack of proper attention anymore. Apparently with everyone starting to have this problem fixed at the same time there is a shortage of transmissions. But no one else seems to have been told they have to wait 8 weeks for a new transmission. It would have been nice to know this before the transmission was removed from the car. Had this been dealt with from the beginning with the proper attention things would be a lot better right now. I am trying every avenue I can to get this resolved ASAP, ORF has been helping too. Son of GT
The authorization process should get easer going forward. I spoke to a fellow yesterday who told me that a letter will finally be forthcoming about the transmission and clutch issue with the early 500's. Grabber may have already covered this earler in this forum (sorry, too many posts to read through) so forgive me if I'm being reduntant, but the background story on this transmission issue goes back to a dispute between Tremec and FoMoCo. Aparantly, Tremec advised FoMoCo that the transmission Ford wanted installed would be inadquate for the engine's horsepower and would fail eventually. FoMoCo just told Tremec to stay the course and supply the transmission as specifed, and Tremec complied. Now the transmissions are indeed failing and Ford and Tremec are scrambling to build and ship replacement transmissions while trying to keep up with production units at the same time. Maybe they are going to do something about it finally. Major recall or something else. My clutch was replaced at 125 miles as some know. The tranny not. Now I have whining in 1st and 2nd gear so I think my synchros are getting bad. I thought it had something to do with the Tri-Ax but I drove another GT500 with the Tri-Ax and that car is quiet. I know that you will get some gear noise with the aftermarket no rubber shifters but this clearly has nothing to do with that. I allready sent an email to SVT contact. Curious if they will sent a new trans. They did sent the needed parts last year 1600 miles ago.

Well, if it makes you feel any better(?), the dispute between Tremec and FoMoCo over the transmision's specs was not only about the input shaft and throw out bearing being inadquate, Tremec also called for beefer gears and synchros in the case too. So I guess that the problem you are experiencing with the howling gears and synchros might be expected in light of this information. I would agressively pursue this issue with your local dealer, and would not take no for an answer. You have a ligitimate failure and warranty claim.
