My Transmission & Clutch & Flywheel installation

I wonder if Ford is willing to install the TSB flywheel and clutch assembly to a car that hasn't failed yet? It could save Ford many, many thousands of $ in the long run, doing the repairs before the transmission needs to be repaired. Could you please ask the question if you have a contact? I'm willing to have the work done to my car but my clutch/transmission has already been changed and it would make sense to do the repair before another failure.

Thanks

Blayne,

That's whay I asked to have mine fixed again. I also had some clutch chatter returning so my dealer repaired my car. The TSB says that prior repairs are still eligible.

Hi Grabber and all the rest of the great GT500 Folks on this forum,

Been off the website for awhile and I saw this thread on the transmission/clutch TSB 8-16-4 for the first time this evening. My pre-production GT500, #12, has always had problems getting into reverse (as did my 05 GT) and does slip sometimes in 3rd and 4th gear. It is also very rough in 1st and second unless I push it a little hard! (2500 to 3000 rpm) I have never noticed a grinding noise however. My GT500 is a bit unusual since it has 77k miles on it (50k by Ford testing grounds 27 K by me over the past year and a 1/2) do you think the TSB still applies to me? I do have the extended warranty from Ford to 85k miles. Ford would not give any repair history on my "Test Mule" so maybe the Clutch/Transmission was rebuilt before they released/sold my GT500 to Port Clinton Ford...probably not!

Also are there any other new TSB's I should know about?

Thanks,

MSB Mustang / Mark

PS- I am enjoying my new tune from Justin at VMP tuning. 21.5 to 22 MPG on my 85 mile commute every day for the last 2 months. Also at a Bay Area GT500 Club event several months ago I got 430 RWHP at 429 ft/lbs of torque. Not bad for an old used vehicle with almost 78K miles on it.

Mark,

Your car is eligible for the TSB. You have the extended warranty and I suggest you use it befor it runs out. Now get down to your Ford dealer.

...The only other GT500 TSB is on the Vert rear glass scuff / alignment issue.

Thanks Grabber,

I pass by my local Blue Oval Ford dealer every morning so I will stop by on Monday and set up the appointment.

Also I just checked my extended Ford warranty and I have the Ford ESP Extra Care Plan. Transmissions are not listed on that plan but transmissions are listed on the Premium Care Plan which is the highest plan just above the Extra Care plan. I think this new TSB should apply regardless. I will find out next week.

I have a very good dealer and they did several TSB's on my 05 Mustang GT.

Thanks again,

Mark,

Print the TSB. Read it and understand it well before you go in. Have it in your back pocket. Please understand that this TSB cures 4 problems.

1. Your car's input shaft has no teflon lube on it. Your input shaft is rusting now.

2. Your cars clutch hub has no teflon lube on it. Your clutch hub is rusting now.

3. Your cars flywheel is nodular iron and does not disapate heat well, so it's warped.

These 3 problems noted above caused your syncros to be damaged in your tranny because it prevented smooth shifting due to a dragging clutch.

Note:

The new clutch hub is nickle...it won't rust.

The flywheel is totally revised...it wont warp.

The input shaft is broached smoother and the splines are a tad bigger...it will release on time.

The Teflon lube will go on your new clutch and input shaft and help everything mate and operate smoothly and prevent rust.

Hope this helps you understand. :)

Good Morning Grabber,

Thanks for the list of things to go over the dealer with. It will be interesting to see if they are familiar with this TSB. They have sold a lot of GT500's there and have at least 5 in stock right now. I did not buy my used one from them however.

Thanks!!!!

My white with blue stripes GT500 vert went in this morning for the clutch/flywheel/tranny service. They checked it out 2 weeks ago and agreed I was eligible and had symptoms - parts came in last week. I love this forum! I linked this whole post to the service manager who said the senior master tech who works on my car will look this post over before starting the work. For sure has not done one before, there are only 4 GT500's in town and I am the first to choose to get serviced. Will let you all know how the service turns out. Fingers crossed!

So, called this morning after car had been in the shop since Monday, just hoping to get it back before the weekend. oh wow - we didn't realize what a big job it was - there are gears in the transmission that have to be removed - we need to have a senior master technician do the job !!!! :censored:

They had actually given it to a jr. tech thinking it was just a clutch replacement, then once he started the job realized he was in over his head - put back together whatever he had started and went to the service manager.

Not that I hadn't told them all of that ahead of time. Sent them links to this page and others showing what it entails, who can do it, etc.

Now they are saying maybe next Monday or Tuesday it will be ready. They hope to have it up on a lift by Friday with a dedicated Master tech assigned to it til completion.

we'll see

At least they let me turn in the 08 Fusion for an 08 California special to drive the next couple of days. :superhero:

Doesn't it give you that warm fuzzy feeling inside? Well at least you have the TSB getting done. I'm waiting for mine to fail and hoping it gives some early warning signs unlike some who just get stuck somewhere. My car was leaking coolant the day bought it. I noticed it when I got it home from the dealer which is not where I get it serviced. When i brought it in to the servicing dealer for the repair he wasn't thrilled with getting me a rental vehicle(apparently they don't have loaner vehicles). This is a car that I had for one day and they have a problem giving me a loaner/rental. I guess with $98.00/hr labor rates, they have to cut corners somwhere

Can't say enough nice things about my dealer from a customer service standpoint. They pick-up my car and leave me a loaner whenever I need service - including oil changes. We'll see how they do when really mechanically challenged now. I had all the symptoms people have posted about - and initally attributed them to driver error - occasional gear grinding, stalling out in reverse, clutch chatter in N when the car was hot, hiss that I thought was the 'sound of the snake' - isn't it supposed to sound like that - LOL

Well the dealer was not familiar with the TSB but they checked and I am covered. I guess I will be the first one they do...dang! I would rather be the 4th or even later. They are a very good shop though and I am having them put in a new high HP drive-shaft from Coast Driveline at the same time. Not sure how long it will take for them to get the parts in?

Grabber,

Thought I would give you an update. 2.5 weeks and everything is still out of the car. When they got the transmission apart there were more gears damaged and Ford is having trouble getting them the extra gears. Getting tired of driving the Escort they loaned me.

I was thinking of having them install the Ford short shifter while it is all apart. (they are already going to install the coastdriveline 4inch driveshaft for me). Do you think the ford M-7210-B short shifter is worth putting in?

Thanks

Mark, I had them put the Ford Racing short throw shifter in and it is certianly worth it. You won't regret it. I would be demanding a replacement tranny if my car was down that long.

Here's the shifter.

Thanks Grabber!

I picked it up at another local dealer (Ford Racing Ford Dealer) for $189 and since the entire transmission is still out it will be easy for them to put it on. Thanks again for the advice to put it in because now is the easy/cheaper time to do it while the tranny is still out...and in pieces!

When I dropped off the new shifter I saw my car up on the rack and the transmission guts were over on a bench. They said it is still waiting for a gear from Ford (for 1 week now!)

Also the TSB talks about... "Remove and replace input shaft and all synchronizer assemblies per WSM, Section 308-03C." What is the input shaft? The main shaft (splined rod) going through the center of the entire length of the transmission is the orig one right now and most of the gears are on it already. Is that center long shaft the "input shaft" you talked about them replacing several emails ago? Or is it something else? Is the input shaft a hole rather than a rod? Any pics of 308-03C with the input shaft shown? I am a bit worried now. They did tell me today though that they have already had a Ford master mech in their shop to look at my vehicle several days ago.

I did see the clutch mounted and it looks really good.

Thanks Again!

Mark

PS-Hernia surgery tomorrow at 9am. Hope they fix me faster than my GT500! A bit worried about the surgery as a good friend of mine went in for foot surgery two weeks ago and died the next day from a blood clot at 62 years old.

I pray that your surgery goes well. let us know if your OK.

Here's a Pic of the input shaft. If you want the proceedure's, I have the WSM files I could e-mail you. PM me your e-mail and I will shoot them over to you.

Hi Grabber,

Thanks for the kind words and prayers! Everything went fine and I feel OK today but I am taking Lortab for some pain. Have to wear tight leg stockings for two days to help prevent blood clots. But my friend who died was wearing the big massaging ones and they did not prevent her blood clot!

Thanks for the pics of the shaft also. I called my dealer and they said they did not get an extra shaft in their kit for the transmission. Which begs the question...Does the shaft go in the clutch assembly or in the transmission? I did not ask if there was a shaft in the clutch kit. Do you have a pic of where the shaft goes?

Hope I get my car back before Christmas! I have to hobble to a family wedding tomorrow night...in my Ford Focus! None of that side of the family has seen the Shelby before. Was looking forward to showing it off. Oh well, might have been too hard to shift anyway with my internal repairs.

Mark,

I'm glad you made it thru the operation OK. Get better soon and relax so you can heal.

I got your e-mail address and when I get home from work tonight I can send you the installation instructions for the shaft. The files are on my home computer. Anyways, the shaft goes inside the transmission and is part of the TSB Kit that comes with the rest of the kit. In fact the shaft is inside the tranny kit box with the rest of the parts. The inputshaft is a critical part of the TSB because the splines on the end of the shaft are a fuzz wider to allow for better release from the clutch. It's also broached differently so it is a bit smoother. If your dealer does not have this part....He messed up on something. I don't understand how he could mess up on it because it's called out right on the TSB. The TSB parts are listed on wht to order. Even a dumby could order it.

Also the dealers need to pull up the OASIS program and pull up the WSM instructions on how to install the parts. I will send you all the WSM instructions tonight.

You need to read the attached post about how the kit comes:

Also.....If you have not read this entire thread, you might want to check it out to understand the installation process.

Grabber,

I Just called the Ford Dealer and they are only missing one part now. It is a bearing, part # 7R3Z7025A. I looked at several sites online but cannot find one. Ford tells my dealer it is back ordered but they can't supply a date! They received the reverse gear today so that is the only part stopping them from finishing up the job.

Any ideas where to look for one? I am sure it is a bit unique. My dealer is good but not very motivated. They say all they can do is order the parts from Ford and wait.

Thanks

Grabber,

Too bad. Looks like I will be driving the loaner Focus to my niece's wedding tomorrow where I will see some of my old friends from high school, 1972. The Shelby would have been a lot more fun...but harder to drive with my new stitches! !

Thanks again for all the help and the pics. Having all that information has been a big help to me...and my dealer! They expect me now to bring a CD with install instructions every time I bring up a new TSB.

Hi Grabber,

I have my #12 GT500 back at the start of week 7 since I took it in. The Ford factory people came out again last Friday and supervised the install. I got the car back a few hours ago, Monday/today, and it feels much tighter in the shifts and more positive! Much easier to shift now especially into reverse. Also no hissing sound when it is shifting. All good news! Now to the bad news...

The Ford people told them, my Ford dealer, if they installed my M-7210-B shifter and new coastdriveline drive shaft my warranty on the new clutch and transmission would be voided! My dealer told me to drive it stock for 5k miles or so to make sure everything was done properly (they did not seem totally confident about their first install of this new TSB) then put in the new shifter and drive shaft. The dealer (shop manager who I respect) also told me the old and new shifters looked identical to him and his mechanic? I did not get a chance to see the two units side by side however. The new one I bought is part . Do you have pics of both shifters? I did see your pics of the new one online. Do they look nearly identical? I am betting they look almost the same but the newer one has a slightly shorter center shaft and they did not look close enough (i.e. measure the difference) to see the difference!

Oh well. I cannot complain. I got a totally new and improved clutch assembly and a 1/2 rebuilt tranny for $100...AND my car had 77k miles on it and needed a new clutch anyway!

I guess I will have to wait 5k to 7K miles, 2-3 months, and then put in the new driveshaft and shifter. My warranty will be expired by then, 85,999k miles because I am at almost 78K now. Not sure if I should extend the warranty? The $1900 for the warranty from 55k to 86K miles turned out to be a good deal. They said it would have cost me $6k for the TSB if it was not under warranty!

Please let me know what you think about the shifter being the same (could my very early test GT500 #12 already had the better shifter put in it?) especially if you have any pics of both of them together. I could also send you pics of my shifter but I can't get them smaller than 1 meg files and that won't go through this system. I found a pic of your orig shifter in this forum and I must say it looks identical to the new one I purchased # M-7210-B. Maybe I purchased the wrong one? Can you email me a pic of the new one you put in?

Thanks

Grabber,

One other thing... While I was looking through your pics for a pic of your orig shifter I noticed your exhaust hangers were still connected. I attached TSB 08-03-04 for you to check out. I did this change to my GT500 many months ago and it did help with noise coming up through the center stack into the drivers compartment when ever I hit a bump. I used a saws-all to cut off the L and R metal brackets and then removed the rubber isolators. I have heard however that they added a bunch of rubber insulators in the 08/09 models?

After looking at your pics of your orig shifter attached to your transmission sitting outside the car and comparing those pics with my new "M-7210-B COBRA SHORT THROW SHIFT" (that is sitting right next to me right now) they do look identical? I am very confused?

Mark,

I'm glad to hear you got your TSB installed. You have a few miles on your car and like you said you needed a clutch anyways. You scored in that matter IMO.

The difference in the shifter is the bends in the iron and the bushings.

I don't have the rattle / buz that shows in the TSB and my car was built after that date...so I'm good.

Thanks,

Rob
