DVS2XS
svtbird91 - good find! The One Lap is a good way to compare all of the vehicles in the Super Stock GT classes. But the driver has a lot to do with how well each car performs. Until seeing the results so far, I would not have thought that the GT500 could be compared to the Z06 Vette (new or old). The GT500 is car number 20 (in SSGT2 BB) Car number 04 is a 2002 Z06 Vette (in SSGT1 BB) Car number 19 is a 2004 Z06 Vette (in SSGT1 BB) Car number 22 is a 2002 Z06 Vette (in SSGT1 BB) Car number 24 is a 2002 Z06 Vette (in SSGT1 BB) Car number 25 is a 2001 Z06 Vette (in SSGT1 BB) Car number 42 is a 2006 Vette (in SSGT1 BB) It is interesting that on the road courses, run so far, it is doing well compared to the Z06 vettes. I wouldn't have believed it would have done this well against either version of the Z06, and especially the new one. The wet skid pad results are interesting as well - 0.824 G. This less than the Grand Cherokee, relatively the same as the Viper, and better than all of the Vettes. Wide tires and lots of torque are not good here, but weight seems to help. The dry skid pad and 1/4 mile tracks should be good to see. I wonder just how close the GT500 in the One Lap is to the finalized production units. My bet is very close, if not the same, but who knows.

DVS2XS
The results for No Problem are up! It looks like the GT500 is still doing well. If you look at the points totals in the large bore SSGT1 and SSGT2 classes, the GT500 team are doing very well compared to the Z06's - Who would have believed?!!! Today is Roebling Road! DVS2XS
Is the GT500 CHEATING?!!! or at least running in the wrong class? Classes: 1. Sports/GT cars over $40,000 – Engine displacement 3.5L and over 2. Sports/GT cars over $40,000 – Engine displacement under 3.5L 3. Sports/GT cars under $40,000 – Engine displacement 3.5L and over 4. Sports/GT cars under $40,000 – Engine displacement under 3.5L 5. Mid-priced sedans and wagons $20,000-$40,000 6. Economy cars under $20,000 7. Luxury sedans and wagons over $40,000 8. Sport Utility vehicles and pickups all price ranges 9. Classic American: All domestically produced vehicles built prior to 1985, including street rods, specials, etc. 10. Classic Imported: All types built prior to 1985 11. Alternate Fuel class-including hybrids, electric, diesels, etc. 12. Retro: Vehicles intended to reflect past trends or models, Minis, etc. Unless the GT500 MSRP (for the base car) is UNDER $40K, it would seem that it is running in the wrong class. With the team running the car being from SVT, you would think they would know this. The latest rumors for the MSRP will put is OVER $40K. I guess we will know when they eventually release the MSRP. It will be real interesting to see what it does on the drag strip for the 1st time .I wonder if they will let it run slicks? This kind of testing under this strict supervision will really show us a much truer picture of what this car can do. I would be very interested in finding out just what mods were done if any besides the roll cage & seat belts.
DVS2XS
svtbird91, According to the tire policy for the One Lap, no slicks, no DOT drag radials. Alll tires must have a 140 or better wear rating. Maximum of 6 tires used to compete (all must be the same brand), and all must be purchased from Tire Rack and branded. I agree - a much better indication of the abilities of the GT500 than a magazine road test.

We'll know by the end of May anyway. To me it wouldn't matter anyway because it is the comparison with all the competition that tells the story! DVS2XS
If you make everything an option, take the Gas Guzzler tax out, no shipping fees, etc....maybe, just maybe, you can get down to $39,999 with creative accounting. Still waiting for today's results. After checking several of the different team's websites, lots are falling to the curb with mechanical problems. Found one photo in www.corvettekillstories.com and the other on Lake-Effect Racing's site: "The first and only GT500 to be seen on the road, of course equipped with Ford factory driver." I guess they don't know about Robert Lane and this site.

Yeah, good point... even if the guzzler is tier-1, that's a grand. and who knows what options will be available in the GT500... or how much will be pre-packaged. Probably not too many choices ...like the Cobras. In that Lake-Effect Racing vid it seemed those Ford factory drivers weren't pushing very tight on some of those apexes and on others they seemed spot on... I'd bet they're just trying to see what it can do -- you probably don't want to be the driver to have to explain why you brought it back with revised sheet-metal <grin>
DVS2XS
More One Lap GT500 photos and others (taken at No Problem, LA)- http://www.davidawilks.com/auto/OneLap/ A quote from the guy who shot the photos (his brother is a competitor); "I also got some time in the Shelby GT500 and can say I'm not impressed at all. On the track the car just drudged along as it has been certainly outfitted with every known sound-deadening material known to man. It was overweight and just plowed its way around the track. If you stood on the throttle it would pull hard but the balance of the car was just off."
D.Boone
Interesting pictures. Good shot of the hood heat extractor vents. Wonder why they put the fake C pillar scoops on it? And removed the front grill cobra emblem? If this is the production suspension I can see why people keep commenting about the ride height. Not what I expected and probably the reason for the comments on the feel in the corners. Besides the weight of course!

I'm a bit surprised at the handling since, supposedly, the GT500's suspension is considerably modified compared to the GT. I suspect the one-lap entry is dead stock. The right tuneable down-lock shocks, beefed-up sway bars and respringing shouldmake a world of diff, but I was kinda wanting the factory to do that for me for $40-grand+ Supposedly, the suspension on GT500 got moded based on what was learned from the CanAm car. DVS2XS
Today is Putnam Park. This evening is US 41 Dragway (just south of Chicago)!!! If the RAIN blows out of there by this evening, it should allow some decent ET's for the GT500. We will finally see what this car can do in the 1/4 mile (on street tires - not drag radials or slicks). Saturday is the dry skid pad - hopefully giving us some decent G numbers. Doesn't sound that way from your friend <sigh> My bet is that the car is stock or very close to it, where 99% of the entries are heavily modified. Also, it is more than likely an early pro-production unit. The color, missing of emblems, fake scoop, etc. are all not production for 2007. I am still amazed that when you look at the times on the road courses, and compare them to the times of the other competitors, that the GT500 is doing well against Vettes and Vipers. Yes, some are doing better, but some are doing worse. For a car that is this off balance due to the iron 5.4L and supercharger/intercooler, I think it is AMAZING! And like 68fastback pointed out, a bit of fine tuning with aftermarket suspension parts, and it should be much better than the factory was allowed to build. 11 DNF's Wednesday! -DVS
