AttilioGT Posted August 3, 2019 Report Share Posted August 3, 2019 Last few weeks I kept hearing a loud clunk coming from my trunk when I went over bumps. Checked the trunk but nothing. So I reached under the car and hit my rear swaybar. Yup that's the clunk sound. I can't see well enough if its bushing or just loose. Car only has 28k miles. BlackSGT Posted August 3, 2019 Report Share Posted August 3, 2019 (edited) Sway bar bushing set for Shelby GT = #M5490A. Regular GT bushings will not fit. Just had mine replaced a couple months ago. They will bind for a bit before settling in, so you might hear a different clunk or groan after installation. Only use silicon based lubricant. mhr1961 Posted August 3, 2019 Report Share Posted August 3, 2019 The “clunk”, “thunk”, squeak is not uncommon on the SGT. The bushings on the SGT are Urethane. Before replacing them you may want to try lubricating them with the proper grease. Do NOT use petroleum based lubricant. Below is a link to a thread about it with a write up about the proper lubricant to use. If you do a search within Team Shelby , for “rear sway bar noise", "bushing squeaking", "rear clunk" , "noise form rear end" you will see several topics about it. noac Posted August 4, 2019 Report Share Posted August 4, 2019 Please take car into a muffler shop and have them check your mufflers...I had some American Thunder Flowmaster Classic axle backs installed last summer as I wanted a slightly louder tone than stock....exhaust shop mentioned how loose the OEM mufflers were. I do not know if they were loose in the hangers or at the connection with the flow tubes, but after the install the clunk/clank I would here over speed bumps etc. was gone. Yes, there is an outside chance it may be a muffler hanger or exhaust issue but it is more likely it is bushings that needs lubricating or possibly replacing if lubrication doesn't eliminate the problem. Lubrication first, because that may be a $1.99 cure rather than start tearing in to the car replacing bushings or repairing/replacing exhaust components. mhr1961 Posted August 4, 2019 Report Share Posted August 4, 2019 (edited) It's all good. I had the loose muffler situation myself, along with the bushing clunk. A small tube of lubricant cured the "clunk". Then had the rattle the muffler was causing fixed at Midas. Glenn Greenwell Posted August 5, 2019 Report Share Posted August 5, 2019 Love these blasts from the past, most of us who have been on the forum for a long time with our purchase of 07/08 Shelby GTs went through some of this. Went back and checked my notes on an e-mail copy from SAI Bud on this. He states most common rattles were from broken exhaust welds, loose rear shocks, and not enough lubrication on the sway bar bushings. I have had and fixed 2 of 3. Never had a loose rear shock. The weather always had a lot to do with it. I just WD40 and it went away. Some had more squeaks than others. Usually a twice year squirt. Just my thoughts...…….. Mark Yeah mine came in black too, but it must have been regular grease that destroyed them mine were all stained black with black grease. I’m not thrilled with the new bushings they do feel cheaper.
