The Rattle from Hell

Recommended Posts

I've got a rattle somewhere in the rear (driver's side) of my 07 Shelby GT and I can't locate the source!

I've seen the other post regarding the driver's side muffler support and this is not the problem.

There is no evidence that the muffler support is contacting the rear body panel.

Also, the poster decribed his sound as a "chirp" and what I have is a bona fide rattle!

I've had it on the lift at the dealership once and I'm going back in on Friday morning.

At first I thought it was something in the trunk, maybe something loose on the speaker deck but I find nothing.

I thought the next most likely source would be something with the exhaust but I can't find it.

Any suggestions?

Did you check the spare tire well?

Could you describe when the rattle is present. Bumpy road, smooth road, acceleration, crusing, braking, turning etc?

It does come and go but seems not to be based on any of the criteria you list.

On a smooth road it is more of a steady metallic vibration.

Over bump it becomes a metallic rattle.

That's te best I can do.

Thanks,

2 things to check...

1. is your side scoop bolted on or stuck on with 3M tape? if screwed on or bolted on I say it could be that someone at SAI drop a nut or 2 down inside the panel.

2. in the trunk area on the drivers side if you look up towards the top where the carpet runs out you'll see an opening. if you can get a small mirror or see down in there, you might find something in between the outer skin of the car & the inner. I know this area is open to the bottom because I caught a mouse :ohsnap: in mine & that was the only way he could get into the trunk.

I had one of those same rattles you describe..and it WAS my muffler hanger even though you couldn't "see" anything hitting. It happened after the car had warmed up too . My mechanic said it was the hanger on the left muffler ( drivers side ), and it is the hanger towards the front of the car. When it heats up, it hits or vibrates. He readjusted that hanger and no more noise !

Hope this helps.

  • 1 month later...

I have the same problem. I took the car into the dealer to have the oil changed for the first time and they let me look underneath while they where changing the oil. I have located my problem, which is the rear most exhaust hanger rubbing against the pinch weld of the bottom side of the car. I'm not sure I will fix it, though-I would like to keep the car as original as possible-FOMOCO mess ups and all....
