Supercharger Fuel Economy?

Does anyone know if superchargers do the same as turbos? When you watch your lead foot and take it easy, the turbo will actually allow the engine to burn fuel more efficiently, and give you better fuel economy. Is it the same with Superchargers?

Thanks,

As for the Shelby I find that I do not get into the boost very often when driving around town. I guess the 5.4 is so strong on its own that unless you really want to blast off you don't have to use the supercharger unless you want to.

The best I have gotten is 23.5 mpg on the highway. All I did was fuel up next to the exit ramp, pulled out, stayed out of the boost & everytime that little shift arrow came "On" around 1800 rpms, I shifted into the next gear until I was running 75-80 MPH. I reset the trip computer also when I filled up & when I had to stop & fuel up again the math was the same as what the computer calculated...23.5 mpg

Now when I drive around home & use the Boost a lot, you can watch the boost gauge go up & at the same time watch the Fuel gauge go down at about the same rate as the boost went up :hysterical2:

Alas! someone else with similar numbers.

I guess my mpg isn't some anomoly.

23.7 mpg

No one believes you can have 550 hp AND decent gas mileage

I made my son look at the readout so I would have a witness for all the naysayers.

He's probably wanting to know what the 4.6 with a S/C gets as far as fuel economy. Not the 5.4's. In that case, Ford Evangelist is the one to talk to

On the freeway as long as you keep your foot off it.. its ok but adding other mods it will slowly go down... I dont drive much of a distance but like to get on it now and then..... Tank a week thats all I ask :)

As a general rule, I think the idea of horse power up, fuel economy down (and vice versa) is how the equation works. That's pretty darn impressive that the 5.4 S/C get's 23.7 MPG! Now, if science could just squeeze a few more miles per gallon out of that engine, with the same horse power, I think all of us muscle heads would be extatic!

As the 5.4 is quite the massive engine, I'm not sure what kind of fuel economy it would get without it's S/C, so, there's no base line to compare it with. However, the 4.6 unmodified, has a highway estimate of 30 MPG (which is amazing, in that it also cranks out somewhere around 250 Horses at the rear wheels!) Most of the numbers I've been seeing when adding a blower at between 7 & 9 psi (e.g. the "safe" zone), is 360 to 385 Horses where the rubber meets the road. Sweet power numbers, but what kind of fuel economy drop happens from the stock 30 mpg? Has anyone on the forums supercharged their GT that can give us some fuel economy numbers?

Thanks!

I have a NA GT with automatic and the FRPP Drag pack with 3.73 gears, headers, and a CAI and I get about 24 mpg on the highway. I installed Doug's Bama Chips 93 octane torque tune and I think my mpg has gone down a little but the fun has gone up a lot. :happy feet:

I'll probably be putting on a Whipple like Ford Evangelist in the next 6 months so stand by.

Oooh, Moabman, you lucky dog! That's what I want to do too... some day. I'm hoping that when my day comes, I can order the FRPP whipple with my baby (intercooled of course) and have them detune it to the safe 7-9 psi. I'm guessing all that that entails is a larger pulley.

I'm thinking your 3.73 gears probably brought your fuel economy down a bit as well. But, then again, what's a few miles per gallon when you're eating rice for breakfast?!!
