Serial Numbers - Warning

Recommended Posts

I got the call from my dealer today. He gave me the VIN for my car. He also gave me a warning that I would like to relay.

He said NOT to go to the ford site and plug it in. Apparantly he had someone do it in the past and the order almost got cancelled. So, if you have your VIN and feel the desire to check up on it, resist the temptation. I am also thinking that if you have the VIN you probably ought not to post it until you get the car. I don't know anything about this site and I don't know what information they require, but if what he says is so and all they ask for is the VIN, then someone else might go in with a known VIN and inadvertantly screw things up for you.

He doesnt want you to try that because he is hiding something from you, like he didnt put it in on time or that the build date is on time etc.. Of all the ford boards out there I have never seen a post like that.

I highly doubt that since I am getting the car from Ford, not the dealer. He has nothing to gain or lose by telling me that. I am only the messenger.

...AND... He also said that my car will be the first one they receive. I don't think the guy would be making pie-in-the-sky promises at this point in time. Looks like things are starting to happen. Maybe another 30-60 days!

I have been reluctant to put too much of my own information on this site as well. I am sure nearly everyone is as excited about this process as we are, but there are always trouble makers lurking about. I believe you are correct about next Monday telling us what we have spent! Yours is the fourth source I have gotten that from today!

I am the 1st on the list from my dealership, too and they have mentioned twice now that they have actually made an effort to ensure that mine might be one of the 1st 50 cars produced. I don't see a terrific amount of significance to that other than it was nice that they actually went out of their way to go that extra step.

Sounds like there could be at least two elder citizens with broad smiles in a couple of months! Yahoo!

Once your car is "locked in" looking up the VIN won't change anything. This guy is making things up.

Wow your getting it right from Ford and bypassed the dealer. And how does one do that?If you trust a car dealer to tell you the truth I have a bridge for sale also.

OK - Probably should have posted the link with my original story. Look here and you will understand. Dispite your burning desire to tell everyone in the world that I am stupid, I'm really not. I have posted my story in the past. No, it is not a lie. I have been dealing with this dealer for over 20 years and they have always been straight up with me. Believe me when I say Ford is getting off cheap!

If you don't sell the bridge I have some nice beach property in Tennessee that you might want to use it on.

Oh yeah, and before you feel the burning obligation to point out that I said second run, here's the explanation for that, too.

I've dealt with this particular salesman in the past, and while he may be wrong, I personally don't have a reason to believe he isn't telling me the situation as he sees it. He said that it happened to one of his customers and he had to straighten it out before the guy lost the car. He didn't present it as a directive, he presented it for my information. If his facts are wrong, then no harm, no foul. But if it is true and I didn't post it, well, I'd hate to see someone who has been going through this process inadvertantly lose their deal. Posting what I was told seemed the safest thing to do, especially after some of the stories I have read on this forum. It's just another piece of information for you to accept or reject as you see fit. I fail to see why he has been labeled a liar.

By the way, unlike many of the examples I've read about, I have to say that my salesman has kept me informed. Every time he heard something new he called me, as well as everyone else on his list. I have never had to initiate a call to him just to find out what was happening. Granted, some of his information was wrong during the speculative stages, but he always kept in touch. I also have a buddy who is lower on his list, and although the salesman has told him from the start it was doubtful that he'd get a car, my friend has received all of the same calls I have. No one was ever asked to put down a dime. In fact, the deposit for my car was totally optional. He really didn't care since he could sell the car very easily if I decided I didn't want it. I decided to put down a deposit just to be safe, mostly because of some of the issues I've read about in this forum. I'm not saying we don't have to be on our guard when buying a car, but in my estimation, he has done his job well and I have been extremely lucky compared with some of the rest of you. Let's try to remember that there are salesmen out there trying to balance allegiance to the dealership and their customers. We have some pretty good examples of them right here on these boards.

As one old guy to another I would give to much thought to what speco2005 says, I see him post on other boards as well and has no real Credibility with me.

No credibility with me either. Seems to post only to aggravate or accuse someone of lying.

I am an old guy as well but I learned long ago that car dealers are one of if not the biggest slime ball and liars out there in the sales world. And I have seen alot of this now as we pursue the GT 500. Hey live and learn I guess I did.

Speco - nobody's denying that the car business is ruthless, but when someone tells you something no matter what the subject, they really don't want to have a bridge offered to them (universal for "you are stupid") from someone who knows nothing about their situation. I am sorry your deals have been difficult, but you know nothing of my situation or my relationship with my dealer.

Something I learned long ago is that when I am just busting to say something, that's the time to keep my mouth shut. It has served me well.

Yes... live and learn.

I'd like to offer a humble guess on this topic, it could be that the Fords internal production tracking may not like checking on vins that are not completed yet. I'm sure the car would get built but the all the information of what its getting equipped with and so forth. Where its scheduled to be delivered to and the customer its going to may get lost in the system for awhile. Also these cars are not being built consecutive so it would be harder to figure out whos is what. I've worked in a industry that used "cradle to the grave" tracking mechanisms sometimes weird stuff happens during a production run and it causes data to be currupted or lost. Looking for the vin before its completed could halt it in the system.

Thats just a humble guess mind you I may be completely wrong.

.02 cents= In support of "Old Guy's" statement (not that he needs it), my 500 is coming through Ford Corporate too. I haven't spoken to one salesman about the car, and my order was placed via fax directly to Dearborn. I have a letter and email that's conferms that my car is in que and that it will arrive suprisingly sooner that I thought it would. Yes, my circumstances are unique and absolutly not the norm, but under certain specific circumstances, you can order a car directly from the Manufacturer, as long as you take delivery through a authorized (in this case) Ford dealer. Check with your dealer, they will verify that it can be done.
