2007 Shelby GT/SC smog issue

I have a 2007 Shelby GT/SC with a Kenne Bell super charger and 13,000 miles. I bought the car out of Bakersfield, California on April of 2018. I took it to get smogged and it did not pass, the guy claimed the catalytic converter and some other things( will state when i am back from vacation) I took it the my local Galpin Ford and of corse they didn't know anything. they only stated it has a stage 2 tune on it and it needs the original tune. Does any one have any idea what the original tune is?  and how to acquire it?

Thanks, Dylan CSM#3052

Is it a Shelby GT/SC conversion or did someone add a supercharger?   When done at Shelby American the GT/SC is a 50-state conversion.  If the catalytic converters are gone someone probably did an exhaust with cat deletes and you'll either have to replace them or find the originals from the previous owner.

One other possibility is that your smog shop does not have the technical expertise to do the job.  My 2008 GT/SC is a Kenne Bell installed by the Magic Man (Bud) and his crew at the Shelby Mod Shop in early 2008.  The first time I went to get my car smogged, I had to find a shop that was not scared off by a modified car.  They walked me through what stickers I needed to get from Kenne Bell and from JBA (for the headers).  Kind of a pain but "doable."  I have never had a problem since then.  As twobjshelbys says, if someone did a cat delete, you will have to spend some money to replace the cats.  I did an exhaust cutout installation that allowed the cats to be retained for day-to-day use but avoided for the track.  It shows that you are on the West Coast.  I am in San Diego.  If you are here, I can get you the name of the shop I use.  Good luck.

What was the exact statement for the failure?  Did it fail a visual inspection (catalysts physically not present) or a status (catalyst not ready)?

If the battery has been replaced then it is possible that the readiness indicators are not set (as mentioned in the previous reply).  You can get a Bluetooth OBDII reader and use the Torque app  to see which emissions indicators aren't "ready".  To get them into the ready state you need to run a drive cycle.   Torque is an Android App, and if you go to their web site they have a list of compatible readers, most are about $20.    Use Google search for "Ford Drive Cycle" to find the steps to run the proper sequences to get the indicators set.

Ill bet it is just a different/aggressive tune is why it will not pass. A strong tuner that specializes in Ford performance and you should be just fine.

BTW: Kenny Bell was not an option for Shelby American Shelby GT/SC in 2007 per Steve at SAI.

A couple of things: First, in CA you shouldn't have been able to complete the purchase and register the car in your name without a smog check. Did it pass when you bought it? And second, Galpin Motors has a sort of stand-alone division called Galpin Auto Sports which does high end mods and builds. I think at one time they were an authorized Shelby shop if they aren't still. I worked with them when I was still in CA and they were great. Back then the General Manager of GAS was Steve McCord. Give him a call and ask for help.

It wasn't clear in the original post, but since CA is a OBDII emissions state there is no real tailpipe emissions failure.   So the following could have happened:

1. Catalysts are not present, fails visual inspection.

2. Battery was disconnected (including replaced).  All OBDII readiness indicators are cleared requiring drive cycle.  Catalyst is especially hard to get (don't ask me how I know) whereas most are cleared in just a few miles driving.  The other one that is hard to get is the evap system in hot climates.  CA will (as of 2018, may change in 2019?) pass with one not ready but it can't be evap.  If they failed OBDII there must be more than one not ready or one of them is evap.

3. The car is not a stock Shelby GT/SC, and the installation of the supercharger included a tune that disables or bypasses some of the OBDII sensors. Tuners are notorious for disabling the O2 sensors, catalyst and EGR.  If this is not a standard Kenne Bell and disables sensors, tune you must get a tune from someone that knows how to tune for the Kenne Bell.    DO NOT RETURN TO THE FACTORY TUNE *UNLESS* YOU RESTORE THE HARDWARE TO FACTORY STATE!!!   You can damage the engine.

It appears you need lots more info from the original owner as to what is going on.

Dylan,

We are going to need more specific info from you on exactly why the car failed to pass. When the smog technician mentioned the cats what specifically did he say was wrong. Were the cats missing? Were the cats aftermarket non-California cats? Were they clogged?

It does appear that 07SGT3052 was upgraded with a Shelby installed GT/SC package in 2009 so the original tune would be a re-branded Kenne-Bell tune from FRPP. How did Galpin diagnosis your car had the wrong tune, did they actually hook your car up and read the tune id number from your cars PCM?

Starting to look like the original post was a hit & run post with the OP not coming back but in case I'm wrong here's a little more advice.

Dylan, the part number for your Kenne-Bell S/C is TS100005INTSHP so if you are confident that your tune is incorrect you would need to reach out to FRPP or Kenne Bell for the tune that was part of your supercharger install.

it passed visual inspection but the scanner claimed that the catalyct converter is not functioning properly, i am currently trying to find the papers for the rest of it.

Sorry for the delay

A buddy of mine has an 07 Shelby GT and said that when he goes to the track, he modifies the tune with that SCT tuner. Ford gave me an SCT tuner but i could never figure out what tune was originally on it. my last resort it taking it down to Shelby and having them take a look at it. The Kenne Bell supercharger was installed by Shelby, i just need the proper tune for CA emissions I think.

will update soon

Not quite sure what this has to do with anything. You can still get an 07 SGT upgraded to GT/SC with a Ken Bell SC. No where in the OP's write up does it say he upgraded it in 2007.

A Ken bell stage 2 kit is the SC and the 130mm KB oval throttle body and tune if the tune was received from KB..

Dylan,

Could you explain in more detail what you mean by Ford gave you an SCT tuner. Do you mean a Ford dealership or Ford Racing? And if so why would they give you a tuner tool for a S/C they did not install?

it was given to me by Galpin Ford. I took the car to them to have them look at the car, i was hooked up with a guy( will post the name if necessary) and he claimed that he would have the problem dealt with when i get it back. a week later he called me saying he looked at the car with his "best mechanic" and it had a stage 2 tune on it. He went on vacation for what he said would be a week, but that turned in to months without any response after contacting them countless times without an answer. so about a week later I went to pick the car up because of the rain and when i got it, it could not have looked worse, they took horrible care of the car and according to the best mechanic guy he never even seen the car in the car in back maintenance  yard of even looked at, so I left free of charge and when I went to get it waxed, it was found cleaning the interior. I am uncertain how to check what tune is on the actual tuner, am wondering how to check it to see. The whole thing didn't add up the second week it was there.

Dylan,

SCT Tuner's are married to the car so the question is did Galpin upload a new tune to your car or was someone just trying to use a tuner they had laying around to do something else. At this point in time its probably best to start from scratch, meaning getting the correct original  FRPP/Kenne Bell tune uploaded to your car.

Do you know if this SCT tuner is the newer type that uses SD memory cards?

Blue - It has to do with initial production cars in the 2007 model year. In 2007 SA did not offer a KB blower option, they did I believe in 2008. I’m not sure what the debate is but I was referring to a new SC install  or in 2007.

Affirmative, SA still does GTSC installs

This is pretty much what I would have expected Galpin to do. Reminds me of when my brand new 2005 Mustang GT had to be taken in for a Check Engine light and it sat, untouched, for a month!

You need to find an independent mechanic who knows the S197 Mustang and Shelby GTs. We all do... since really, no dealer knows how to work on our Shelbys!

Yeah, still not relevant to the OP's question other than pointing out his SC was installed at a date after the original delivery of the car.

Your so argumentive why, do have something to argue about? I’ve been here for almost 12 years this is the way boards go.....discussion.

I edited my words because I refuse to go down that avenue. You obviously have a bigger issue than the thread shows.

Have a nice day.

Lol, that was argumentative? I have no issues here, and I've been here since 2010, also not relevant.  Was merely pointing out something you pointed out and it's non relevance to the op's question. Apparently you took offense to that. Not sure what road you wanted to go down and why there was a need to edit your comments, are you angry or something?

You have a nice day too.
