Ya I would believe your second thought, he was shifting up & instead hit a lower gear.

I have read that the traction control can turn back on spontaneously when it is turned off for any reason. Is this true ?  Is it possible that this is the reason why the car turned by itself? Did the car brake one tire sensing the wheel spinning?  I also think taking the foot off the accelerator is smart!
