Gt500KR Alcoa wheel value?

Recommended Posts

If you start to research the newer upper end performance cars, it is apparent that the tire bulge/profile has changed also. Tire bulge has been lessened and replaced with a more flat side wall for better handling. <<This allows wheels to be fitted all the way out to the edge without "the bulge" going past the fender lip.

I have read that some of the "old school" Corvette guys have complained about the lack of bulge, but it all comes down to what works best when the cars are originally tested, and tires fitted for the best performance and handling. Swaying back and forth on a tire bulge when pressed into turns is definitely not the optimal set up apparently, by all indicators of the more recent performance cars and tire profiles.

KR cars weren't made in 2 years. They were made in 1968 and 2008. NOT 2009. I have a set, with the GT500RK/SHELBY/ALCOA milled lettering in them. They wont leave for under $2k a piece. It's TRUE that there is NOT a high demand because they only put those wheels on 1,111 cars. Anyone who says otherwise, is trying to under sell you or has chinese knockoffs.  They can only be mounted 4x and are shot after that. Between myself, brother and father, we have all 4 color KRs and have been trying to buy wheels. If you have the KR stamp, I'll pay $1500 for the set to powdercoat. But I'd have to see them. I work for Alloy Wheel Repair Specialists, and have done ALL the research.

You do realize this thread hasn't been active for nearly two years? Just saying......:whistling:

I'm more concerned about the 712 owners who just learned that their 2009 KR doesn't exist ;)

I was thinking the same thing. Someone has definitely not done their GT500KR homework as it relates to the most recent GT500KR production............Now if was a 40th Anniv. GT500KR that was being discussed, then yes 2008 only.

Nope their post was pretty specific, claiming their research showed just two years of KR production, 1968 and 2008.

The center cap shown below is pretty cool. I bought a set of 20X9 Super Snake engraved Alcoa's back in 2009, they were sold to me by a person who lived in the same town as the Alcoa wheel plant and they said they "just got a hold of them", that is all they would tell me about where they got them. Those 20X9's had the caps shown below, they fit the Alcoa wheels nicely, I have never seen another set of these caps. I use them on my Alcoa's from time to time, just for a change........

Robert ,

I NEED those center caps!!!

^^^^^^I rarely show a picture of them because that is a common reply when I show them.

I have kept them guarded because it is the only set I have seen. If by chance I lose one, I most likely would never find a replacement. There may be more out there, but I have not seen them.

I didn't realize I was so heavy on the original Black Super Snake center caps from a 2011/12 Super Snake, but here is a picture of the Alcoa caps..........

Ding, Ding, Ding.........a Winner!!!

I FINALLY figured out where I had seen the Alcoa branded center caps that I have pictured above!!!! It was the Alcoa Wheel Care and Maintenance Guide/Booklet.....

s-l16006.jpg

^^^^That is the only place I have ever seen these Alcoa branded caps. ^^^^This is a nice original piece of unique information that should be in every GT500KR and GT500 Super Snake glove box.

With all due respect, what are you talking about ? The GT500KR was produced in 1968, 2008, and 2009. I have an extra set of GT500KR/SHELBY/ALCOA milled lettering rims that I'd be willing to sell to you for $1500 apiece !!  By your calculation, you can make a $500 profit on each rim/tire combo or $2000 profit on all 4 !!

A number of years ago, Ford Racing sold off the inventory of these wheels.  A number of folks, myself included, bought a set of 4, new in the boxes, for $2,000.  I don't know if that helps.  I also have another set on my Shelby GT/SC that I bought used.  I have not found the Alcoa treatment (if it is a treatment; sorry for my ignorance on that point) to have any advantages (I would be interested in hearing other people's experience with the treatment) and have polished my wheels without regard to the Alcoa treatment.

How much are they really worth if i can ask, also can curb rash be repaired. Asking as I am shopping KR's and one I like has 2 wheels very light curb rash. Thanks!-Randy

They are only worth what someone will pay.  They stopped making them so what is currently available is all there is.
Yes they can be repaired.
If you put a new KR wheel next to a new SS wheel the KR wheel is noticeably shinier. This is due to a thin plastic like clear coat put on the KR wheels. Not all of the leftover wheels that ford sold after the end of KR production had this clear coat. I have an extra set of KR wheels with and without this clear coat.
If you need to repair a KR wheel with this clear coat the clear coat will have to be removed. For a car that is driven 90% of people will never notice.

Jim - Was it Ford Racing that sold off the NOS GT500KR wheels or SAI? I though the GT500's went to SAI from Ford and were KR'ed, and that SAI kept the replacement stock of all KR replacement parts until the stock was exhausted. I was thinking that SAI sold off the NOS KR wheels a few years ago......Much like the extra CF hoods have been sold off recently (within the past two years or so).........

Yes, it appears to be Ford Racing.  Here is the receipt for the purchase.

I guess I was thinking Shelby because the auctions of these wheels on eBay were through Shelbyauctions......I thought, but I could be wrong? I also thought a KR owner had to go through Shelby to get replacement parts.

I can say that recently I bought some of the Shelby/Kicker audio upgrade items from AMPerformance on eBay, the bill (or payment receipt was from AMPerformance), but the shipment came from Shelby with Shelby packing tape all over box. I thought I was buying from AMPerformance by the purchase paperwork and was surprised that Shelby was actually involved in the background.

When I bought my Alcoas, I got a tip from a fellow Shelby owner in Oklahoma that they were out there but I needed to jump on it.  Who really knows how all this stuff works.  Look at your audio stuff.  Marketing of an item and the outfit from which it is shipped can definitely be two different things.

Yes, I have found that many times (it seems much more than not) it is a "drop ship" world.

I recently looked at two different vendors websites and found they had "in stock" items that I knew were discontinued by the original manufacturers. I was able to put the "in stock" item in my cart and could have checked out on each website, but then I decided to call them and find out if they actually had the item in stock?...…….No, neither of them did, they would be taking my order and then having the item(s) shipped from the original manufacturer. Well, I already knew that Shelby no longer carried the item listed as "in stock" on the one vendors site and Autometer no longer carried the other item that was listed as "in stock" on the other vendors site, so there was no use in adding the items to my carts, paying for the items, only to be contacted afterwards and told the items were no longer available and then receiving a refund.

Yes!  Post pics once you get them on.

You bet. Should help a bit on the cornering and traction, 285 up front and 305 on the rear. Although admittedly I would have no comparison as I am not into pushing the wing foots in the cold and damp weather. I did a similar but different set up on my SGT/SC it made a world of difference on that car.

285’s!  Wow, what off-set are the front?  That’s awesome!

I’ve done track days, but never anything serious. To be honest you can track any car, but there is a difference doing it in the right car.  My 70 Boss 302 was set up for track, but I ended spending so much time under the hood it took the joy out of it.  That said - seeing your icon - my neighbor has a Cayman GTS and though I have not taken it on the track I have  pushed that thing pretty hard on the twisties and it’s a blast!!  He has the manual transmission - the only way to go IMOP - but still with rev match it’s like cheating!  (No I don't turning off). So easy to drive fast.  He is afraid to drive the KR...now that it’s been upped to 600+ RWHP he will never drive it (dyno tune in less than a month away, I’ll post honest...but I’m betting it there).

cheers to driving!
