Question on Automatic GT500

I was visiting a friend at the hospital the other day and upon driving into the parking lot a GT500 caught my eye (as they always do). Red convertible, white stripes. It was surprisingly parked right in the middle of a VERY crowded lot. As I walked by it, I took a quick look inside and was amazed it had an automatic transmission. Not sure what year it was, but have included a pic for ID. My question is, was automatic an option that year or was this converted or could it be a "tribute" (as they are sometimes called)? Were those wheels a factory option? For sure, it really could use detailing. Picture below, Just curious. Thanks.

I've learned to say, "Never say never". However there were no auto's in GT-500's. Also I could not imagine anyone putting those wheels on a Shelby GT-500. Bullitt's are normally not bad looking wheels on a Mustang but they're a big step backwards on a Shelby and usually if people replace the stock wheels they usually "upgrade" to something other than Bullitt's. Like to see the rear and under the hood to be sure so .... maybe, maybe not (LOL).

I appreciate all the comments. Not that its a big deal but I was just curious. I agree on the wheels. Factory are much better looking than those on a Shelby. It's not often I see Shelby's around here and when I do, it certainly catches my eye. Thanks again.

Oh, a pic of under the hood might have been a stretch but a shot of the rear, thats a different story ......

yeah, that looks like a standard mustang that had some Shelby doo dads added. Don't think I would even call it a clone. Basically a Mustang with a GT-500 "nose job" and some emblems here and there. But if the owner is happy, then good for him/her because its their car.

You are wrong. :puppy_kiss:

I know the car. He is my mechanic and swapped the transmission himself. Believe it or not.

You can always look at the VIN number, since the engine to the GT500s are unique the engine code for the VIN is a dead giveaway. The eight digit is going to be an 'S'. Anything else is not a GT500.

Yup, 88S = Shelby GT500 coupe, 89S = GT500 convertible. That's a sure way to tell.

A not sure way would have been to look at the brake calipers and a SVT logo on the tachometer.
