Wish it was an auto trans

I know how you feel. Our 07 SGT is an automatic and a joy to drive. After owning a GT500 and living in a urban area stop and go traffic was a killer. You are right it was getting tedious. I really wish they would've made the GT500 in an automatic, for the life of me can't figure out why they never did. A big plus is my wife drives the car as much as I do and we can enjoy it together.

Ford never made the GT500 in an automatic because of two things both which are pathetic. One, Ford assumed everyone wanted the manual tranny which is totally wrong and the second was told to me by a Team Mustang engineer in 2001 after the Bullitt came out. Ford only offered the limited edition cars with manuals because they already had a Crash Test Certification with the manual trans unlike they didn't have this certification for the automatic in these limited production cars, hence why you got that bullshit excuse about the automatic couldn't handle the power. He said for Ford to get this certificate would have cost them millions in testing and they did not deem it worth it for a limited run of cars. Does that excuse still apply when the 2007 Shelby came out, hell no. All these current 10-14 GT500's running big HP most have switched to the 6R80 because it can handle the HP above 800hp unlike the manual which will break.

Rumor is the 2018 GT500 will be offered with the new 10spd Automatic

I did a survey on this site about 3 years ago to all 2007 to present GT500 owners that if you had the option of an automatic when you bought the car would you have chosen it? Almost 50 percent said they would have chosen the automatic

Have you driven an SGT with an Automatic? I would do that before wishing you had something you don't. Maybe the grass is not greener on the other side? I go back and forth on this, but I believe that I would much rather have a 5 speed if it were available for my GT-H. If you lived near me, I would swap transmissions with you and split the costs for the R&R. (:

My 2013 5.0 was an automatic and was boring to drive...felt like I was just cruising around in a Lincoln. I can see the OP's point, however...an auto is so much easier to live with in traffic. That's another reason why my DD is an auto (currently a Wrangler)...but I wouldn't want to have a Shelby GT or similar with anything but a manual.

Now the auto comes with paddle shifters to make the semi-automatic gear changing a reality like the various high end, high performance cars. I have not tried the Ford version yet in a new Mustang. Using them in my twin turbo '14 Explorer Sport doesn't really count. Anyone have experience in a new Mustang GT?

I had an 07 automatic SGT. Stock tune was horrible for an automatic. But after buying a tuner and ordering a Brenspeed custom tune and modifying the shift points and shift pressures to my liking, the car really woke up and was a gas to drive.

I felt the manual 2008 SGT would have been too unbearable in all the traffic around L.A., but the automatic left a lot to be desired. Like a delay of several seconds when up or downshifting.

I remember trying the manual transmission in one of the upgrade versions of the GT500, like maybe a 2008 KR, that had a much lighter clutch. But still, anyone trying to leave a crowded stadium parking lot (or just trying to drive anywhere in L.A.) would probably wish for an automatic.

The auto on my nephew's late model V6 Mustang had a cool match rev feature when downshifting manually that was pretty nifty.

Well, I still have my old reliable '00 tundra as a daily driver. If I didn't then I would be almost totally miserable driving my 5spd SGT everyday just running errands. Yeah a crowded parking lot is a total b!@h too, but at least real maneuverable.
