Our Method, your perfect lap - Since 1972, at places such as Daytona, Le Mans, and Sebring, The High Performance Driving Experience coaches have developed a very specific method of training, effective for teens to professional drivers. Our method aims to safely push your abilities and discover that your own limits, and the car’s, are higher than you’d imagined. What it’s about You’ll be driving your car at speed on a track, learning to better control your car and understand how it responds to your inputs. You will learn, or refresh your memory of, the basics of driving at speed and techniques that will help you improve on those basics. This will help prepare you for emergencies, both on the track and on the street. While you will explore both your and your car’s capabilities, you won’t be pushed or encouraged to go any faster than is comfortable for you. You are not attending a racing school – outright racing is strictly prohibited. This is not practice for any racing or speed competition. At your first High Performance Driver’s Education event you’ll learn skills that you can use in your everyday driving. You’re probably excited and maybe anxious. As you study this guide, remember that everyone at the track was new once and probably felt just as you do now. This is not a racing school. Your instructor will help you learn at a comfortable and enjoyable pace. HOW TO PREPARE & WHAT TO BRING All drivers must have: Valid US Driver’s License (Drivers aged 16 or 17 MUST have a parent/ Legal guardian signed waiver) Completed Technical Inspection Form Helmet that meets certification for SA2010 or newer. Approved Helmets WILL have this designation stamped on them. DOT Motorcycle helmets or other types of sports helmets are NOT acceptable. (A limited number of rental helmets are available, please contact us prior to the event to reserve a rental helmet if desired) A vehicle that meets the requirements outline on the Technical Inspection Form Personal Preparation & Attire: If you are planning on driving to the track in the morning, be sure to allow enough time to arrive promptly when registration opens Check the weather forecast and adjust your clothing as appropriate. This event runs regardless of the weather, even in pouring rain, freezing cold or broiling heat. Sunglasses, hat, sunblock and a poncho/raincoat are a great idea WEAR CLOSED TOE SHOES APPROPRIATE FOR DRIVING ONLY. FLIP FLOPS OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF OPEN TOE SHOE ARE STRICTLY FORBIDDEN ON TRACK! For safety reasons rubber soled shoes are highly recommended. Leather soled shoes are a bad idea. DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOL OR OTHER INTOXICANTS PRIOR TO OR DURING THE EVENT! Suspected intoxicated drivers will be asked to leave the event without refund and may be banned from any future events. This is a ZERO tolerance rule. Review the HPDE Participant manual in its entirety When you arrive: Enter the track, report to the registration trailer Sign-in, present your driver’s license, completed Tech Inspection Form and Emergency Contact Info PLEASE HAVE YOUR TECH INSPECTION FORM PRINTED AND COMPLETED/SIGNED IN FULL – WITHOUT IT WE CANNOT LET YOU ON TRACK! Make sure you receive your run group sticker and arm band Report to driver meeting – refer to schedule distributed prior to event for timetable Novice drivers will be paired with their instructors after the meeting Insurance Please remember that any incidents or breakdowns that happen on the track do sometimes occur and may not necessarily be covered by your vehicles insurance or factory warranty. We have had good results in the past when you make sure you let them know that this is a “driver improvement” program and NOT a “racing” program. However the only way to be SURE you are covered is to check with your provider, or to purchase a “track day” policy from a vendor that specifically provides this coverage. Many coverage types and levels are available. Here is one provider we have worked with: Lockton Motorsports The HPDE will NOT be liable for any damage/ injury sustained during any event. RUN GROUPSGroup 1 - Advanced Solo / Licensed Racers - Experienced drivers who have completed multiple high performance driving events at the solo level (documentation of experience is required) or drivers with current competition licenses. Passengers are typically NOT allowed in this group. Expected to know the basics and advanced techniques of car handling, driving in traffic, track awareness including flags and worker stations. Experienced in safely handling unexpected situations. Possess the required professionalism of driving at the limit with safety as the number one priority. Drivers must be experienced in unrestricted passing zones. A “point by” is required so drivers are aware of all passing situations. This is the ideal group for racers who need practice, additional seat time, testing, shake-downs, or the advanced HPDE driver. Group 2 - Intermediate Solo - Participants that have driven many track-day or HPDE events, or drivers that have been approved to advance from Novice to Intermediate Solo group. Intermediate drivers MAY have passengers with passenger armbands and approved helmets in their vehicle for these run groups. Intermediate drivers are expected to know the basic techniques of car handling, handling traffic, track protocol, track awareness, including flags and worker stations. Drivers must exhibit the ability drive at or near the limits of their car in a safe and controlled manner. Passing is restricted to designated straights with “point by” only. Group 3 - Novice/ Novice Solo - Participants that have never driven on a road course, or drivers with limited experience at track events. Passing is NOT allowed in the Novice Run Group. Novice Drivers will usually have an Instructor IN the car with them except under special circumstances as approved by HPDE Chief Instructors. Novice Solo drivers MAY have passengers with passenger armbands and approved helmets in their vehicle for these run groups. Group 4 - Shelby Special Group - This is a special group for this event only. In honor of our special guests travelling all the way from Las Vegas, Shelby American, this group will be limited to those attendees who bring Shelby cars to the track. Of course out of respect for the Great Carroll Shelby’s legacy... Ferrari Vehicles will also be allowed in this group. This group will be run under the guidelines of the Intermediate Group and is only open to those drivers who are approved for the Advanced or Intermediate level. Novice drivers must register for the Novice group until approved by a Senior Instructor to move to the next level. Drivers who qualify for this group will automatically be entered into this group at registration. You may opt-out of this group at check in at the registration table on-site by notifying the event staff. Drivers who opt-out of group 4 will be moved into the appropriate group for their skill level. Drivers MAY choose to stay in this group and ADD an additional run-group for even more track time for an additional fee. See the Registration Table in the Paddock for more information. CAR TECH INFOAll drivers are responsible for Technical Inspection of their own vehicles. Drivers, at their option, may choose to take our Tech Form to a professional to evaluate the vehicle for adequate condition for track day use. All vehicles are subject to inspection by HPDE Officials. Vehicles found NOT in compliance with HPDE Safety rules may be asked to correct the issue prior to allowing the vehicle on the track. Drivers who have their vehicles removed from the track for technical violations will NOT receive a refund for the event. Some recommended areas to pay particular attention include (but not limited to): Tires/Wheels – ensure your tires are in very good condition. At least 50% tread, proper air pressure, no dry-rot or cracking. Wheels should be inspected for any cracks or other damage that may affect its use. Lug nuts should all be present and set to the correct recommended torque and this should be checked several times throughout the event. Hubcaps, Trim Rings, Center Caps or other items not directly bolted should be removed. Brakes – Track days put a LOT or extra work onto your braking system. The brakes MUST be in good working order. Brake fluid should be full and clear. Special high temperature (DOT4) brake fluid is recommended but not mandatory. Brake Pads should have plenty of pad left. Brake rotors should be free from gouging, cracks or other damage. The system should be free of any leaks or cracked/ brittle hoses or damaged tubing. Pedal should be high and firm. Brake lights should be working. Steering/ Suspension – Check wheel bearings for any loose conditions, verify that the wheels move with the steering wheel and there is no excess play. Shock absorbers should be in working condition. Engine/Fluids – Engine should be working properly. Engine oil/ Transmission fluid should be fresh. No FLUID should be leaked onto the track. Overflow catch cans must be used to catch any fluid expelled by the radiator. Batteries must be secured firmly in the vehicle. Lights – ALL vehicles driving in an evening event MUST be equipped with at LEAST one white, forward facing “headlight”. Red taillights and brake lights ARE highly recommended. Safety Equipment – Factory installed seatbelts are adequate for most cars. Convertible cars are allowed in the Novice or Intermediate groups provided the driver/ passenger sign the rollover waiver as part of the Tech Sheet. In the Advanced group, convertible or open top cars MUST have either professionally installed roll bars or factory rollover protection. Helmets (SA2010 or newer) are MANDATORY for any drivers or passengers on the track at ANY time (except during controlled Parade Laps) Other – Prior to entering the track, drivers must remove any loose items from the passenger compartment AND the trunk. Drivers should be focused on the track, so radios must be turned off, windows must be opened, seat belts secured, headlights on, A/C turned off, Helmets on and secured. Drivers must make sure they are entering the track with the correct run-group and have the car sticker in place and the wrist band visible to the track steward at the pit- gate. There are MANY other areas where your car should be inspected prior to any Track Day event. Please review the Tech Sheet completely and ensure that you understand ALL of the areas of inspection. Remember, your safety and that of the other drivers and track personnel depend on you. Just because a car is “new” does NOT mean that it is automatically good to hit the track. arcticblast
Well I showed up on Saturday just in time to cruise from Homestead to Key Largo with a fine bunch of cars. It was impressive seeing all the fine rides, pulling the end in my Shelby F150. Had to go, but hopefully I can find the time to stay next time.
