twobjshelbys
Is anyone going to be at the auction? I'll be around but don't have a schedule yet. Probably most of Thursday to take pictures and then off and on for the other two days.
twobjshelbys
I went over today to get my package. The parking at the Mandalay Bay is way different. There is a new garage next to the convention center. It was empty except for some auction cars that were there being moved into the staging area. I took the elevator up and ended up in the lobby of the cars. The guys were in there marking off places. I found a few inside that caught my eye. Nothing had their lot numbers posted on them yet.It looks a lot better in person than in the photo.Stephen Becker's CobraPanteraMy wife told me I can't buy this.I wasn't expecting to be where I was so I just had my crappy cell phone. shelbymotorsports
Craig jackson announced at the gala a few minutes ago they will not be returning to reno and will announce the new location on Saturday. Took them long enough. Reno was a bad business decision from day one but who knows what their motive really was for ever getting involved with a Reno auction. Their excuses for the SoCal auction were not believable so I doubt the public will ever know the real reasons. Steve
twobjshelbys
I went over Wednesday afternoon for the preview. I got there at about 11:00 and only about 2/3 of the cars were present - they were still unloading outside. The vendor area was still setting up. I saw an old friend of mine from BJ and he said they would be working to move in and put the auction labels on the cars until this morning.A few pictures...New Hellcat with the Shaker. twobjshelbys
A polished Cobra (probably a 50th anniversary edition 427) by the Mothers booth. I hope they go over it because it was all scratched. I can't understand what the attraction to this unpainted aluminum is. It's horrible maintenance. The Hillbank booth.Mach 1Ford GT. The car was reported to have been obtained from an estate. It was in need of a detail - paint was microscratched all over. Maybe they detailed it last night. Also note the position (this is its final resting place). It's on the end of a row - good. But it's not on any of the "special areas" as they always have been in the past.06 Shelby GT-H. This car is a shining example of why you should never buy a car without inspecting it first. The hood (next pic) is full of paint bubbles. This is NOT 002H.Eleanor clone (which is a made up car to begin with). Still sharp looking but I don't understand the money they get.Lighting is really tricky in there and this a white on a sea of white light so the exposure is way off. This car was covered with bugs. I don't know if their intent was to leave it like this or to clean it up. A whole set of the little microcars. Some of them are pretty rare. twobjshelbys
Cobra and GT500 Shelby Series 1 Viper being staged in the Dodge area. I asked the guy if I could borrow it for the rest of the afternoon to take it out to Spring Mountain. Band on the stage at the reception. Don't know what happened that caused the stage to be overexposed. I think I need to check out my camera. Craig and Steve addressing the group The crowd. The Mandalay Beach is a nice place. During the day it's their pool area and at night they have concerts with open seating on the beach area. We saw Blondie there. For the first 1/2 the band was so overmoduled it was hard to understand but they did fix it for the second half.
Don Johnston
Nice photos. Thanks for posting. What is with the monster lift on the 68 fastback Mustang behind the red Ford GT? Also, nice shot of the back of the lifeguards! I am wondering if the polished Cobra was the one on the field in front of the SA display at Monterey Historics in August. Sure looks like it and there was whispering discussion nearby about the scratches and if the Mother's people had any remedies. I believe the resulting decision is that it needed another full body sanding and polishing which would require many, many man hours of work to get it right. twobjshelbys
So... I don't know if anyone has noticed. Conspicuously absent from the BJ auction in Vegas (and I don't know about earlier ones because I wasn't paying attention) are two of the mainstays. I was watching on streaming yesterday morning and it occurred to me that Amy Assiter was not signing the National Anthem. I thought maybe she was "off" due to illness or something. Then today I was on the floor and someone asked where Spanky was.... So it looks like the Assiters and BJ have separated. Edit. Personnel changes happen, heck just look at SAI, but it would appear that this separation was not mutual. I believe the Assiter's own their own auction company in Texas but I'm wondering if another big auction house will bring them on-board so that they may benefit from the Assiter's knowledge of how Barrett-Jackson operates. shelbymotorsports
Boy did B-J just do the seller of that 40th Anniversary wrong. Not a single mention that this car was built at SAI, not a single mention that this car has a Shelby serial number, not a single mention that just 312 were built. B-J presented this car as more of a Ford built GT500 than what it really is. And why Steve Magnante said the car puts out 450hp before Shelby touched it baffles me. b17drvr
That price is what they have been going for at the other auctions. I saw one at BJ Scottsdale last January with 1038 miles sold for 45k. And it was way cleaner than this one. The guy might have done better if he had detailed the engine and underneath the car. People like clean and shiny cars to bid on.

Yes that info is in the B-J catalog but I sure didn't hear the auctioneer mention these items and when Steve Davis took to the mic I didn't hear him mention these items either. Now to be fair this 40th Anniversary brought pretty much what these cars sell for but to the average person all they saw was a 2007 GT500 built by Ford. Also the TV coverage had 650hp listed on the screen, not sure where that number came from. Perhaps I'm being too critical but it just felt a little sloppy and perhaps the car could have brought a little more, but then again maybe not.
