OaktownACE
Saw this and wondered if this is where the SS stripe originated. Anybody know? I believe this is a mustang prototype,

David Hawkins
Well.....that's the same style Stripe they put on the 1964 1/2 Mustang Pace Car. Edited September 14, 2015 by tesgt350
Secondo
That's the stripe from the Ford GT. I imagine Carroll designed the one for the original '67 Super Snake.

John Canfield
The car shown, the Mustang II (no, not THAT Mustang II) was a last minute show piece built on a pre-production Mustang platform. It still exists in a collection in Detroit. The Super Snake stripe we know today goes back to to the one '67 GT500 Super Snake that was commissioned with its 427 engine as a Goodyear test vehicle. While I understand that last part, it seems a little more than a coincidence that the super snake stripe is one wide and two thin just like the prototype albeit in grander scale on the SS. Don Johnston
The 1964 Mustang prototype used the same style stripe that was used on the side stripes for the Mustang GT. It came from the side stripes used on the racing Ford GT of 1962. The explanation of the concept coming from the original 67 SS is correct as a change from the 1965-66 GT350 Lemans stripes and to make the car stand out as a special edition Shelby. Lemans type stripes were no longer offered as a factory or dealer option after 1966 production though many owners had dealers put them put on or did it later. That Stripe Combo was also used on a LOT of Foreign Cars in the late 50's early 60's as well.

Frank S
My copy of the 1:43 Spark (sparkmodel.com) Terlingua Racing Team 1967 championship car arrived yesterday, he said, checking out the over-the-top stripe pattern:

07shelbygt/sc1904
The car pictured is a prototype from 1962 obviously they made changes by 64 this car was later named the mustang 2 not to be confused with mustang II which was essentially a pinto. John Canfield
No, the car shown above is a '63 Mustang II, not the '62 Mustang I which was a two seat, mid engined, four cylinder concept car. The '63 was built off of a pre-production chassis and is a regular four seat, V8, front engined, rear drive car. Real deal '67 Super Snake GT500 '62 Mustang 1 concept car Edited September 20, 2015 by falcongtho3
