Dan,

17K. We picked up the car in Sept 2012. I had 4500 miles on it.

It was a CPO car, plus we bought the extened warranty.

I'm calling the dealer today and we'll see what they have to say.

So is it a 2012 or older? 17K is not a lot for the clutch to go south unless it was abused, if it is a 2012 .

When I took my 2007 in for the clutch work in 2013, using my Ford extended warranty that i bought with the car, the dealer dealt with Ford warranty and they covered it. Apparently Ford warranty complained (it was raced, it was abused) but the dealer stuck to their guns and sent pics and got it approved.

It's been 6 hours and no word back.

We also got the ValueCare Program. The dealer has seen this car every 6 months for and oil change.

I still have the original tires, they check the tire tread, the brake pads and everything else looking for someway to sell me something.

So hopefully, they'll be on the up and up and take care of this deal.

My 2008 has 12,000 miles on it and still functions ok- knock on wood!!!

I also have the Ford extended warranty and am quite interested in what you do to get it covered under that warranty. Please keep us updated.

If you have the original clutch the problem with these starting in `07 was due to the spline from the clutch to the input shaft on the transmission , having a tight clearance causing it hang up making the clutch slip & damaging the synchros on the tranny. When it starts to slip it wears the friction material & steadily gets worse , which also generates heat to flywheel warping the original cast flywheel. If you do a lot of stop & go driving the damage will occur at a quicker rate .

Yes. Original clutch.

I took the service manager for a ride in it yesterday.

Waiting for a call back.

Let us know what he says . The only thing Ford did in ` 08 when they discovered the problem was put grease on the spline, which really didn`t do a lot. When the TSB came out they changed the spline , clutch ,cast steel flywheel & synchros.

The dealer called.....

They are going to warranty it under the TSB.

Seems that the Premium care ( Ford ESP) is a 12 month deal on the clutch.

I verified they were gonna use the parts listed in the TSB and not just replace the parts with the same as the original.

Should be done Thursday :-)

I asked if I bring 4 qts of Royal Purple, would the chage out the tranny oil and they said yes.

Good move on the tranny fluid change to RP Any chance you will get some pictures or see any of the parts ? I was allowed to take pictures of the change & believe me when you see the tranny apart you wonder if the mechanic remembers where all the parts go . There is one part on the TSB that Ford forgot to add & I believe it was the locknut on the output shaft of the tranny that the manual said must be replaced . My mechanic would not put mine back together until he had this part. It took an extra day to finish as they had to order the part. You might want to check that out. Good Luck.

I'd like to see the old parts.

I'm an aircraft mechanic and have always done things myself.

It just doesn't feel right having someone else working on my car!

Well if they don`t show you I have pictures of about four `07 - `09 Shelbys

Donny Just for your info most of the clutches had rust build up on the tranny spline input shaft , some flywheels had heavy score marks from excessive heat probably because the clutch disc was hung up & not making proper contact with the flywheel.

Thanks,

If there is rust on the input shaft, I hope the tech cleans it off.

I just got word that they're putting it back together after lunch so maybe it'll be ready tonight!.

They better not . The TSB calls for a new style input shaft., if they put the old one back you will be into the same problem . The spline was machined with not enough clearance & with the little bit of rust it cause the clutch disc to hang up. I would be checking with your dealer & make sure, have they done any of these?. In order to put a new input shaft in the tranny has to come apart .

In the latest most current TSB that I have a thread on shows they test for syncro damage and if not damaged, they do not break the tranny open and replace anything....Including the input shaft. They have found that was not needed if it was not damaged.

This article supersedes TSB 09-19-11 to remove the production fix date, update the Service Procedure and Part List.
ISSUE:
Some 2007-2009 Mustang Shelby GT500 vehicles may exhibit the following clutch/transmission symptoms: hard to disengage or engage 1st and reverse, hard to shift all gears, vehicle creeps with transmission in gear and clutch pedal fully depressed without brake pedal application. These symptoms may be caused by the clutch not disengaging fully when the clutch pedal is fully depressed. This may be due to flywheel distortion caused by excessive heat build-up during unique traffic conditions (example: severe stop/go urban driving, excessive clutch slipping). The clutch system is designed for performance driving conditions.

ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Located at the end of the procedure are Figures 1, 2 and 3 which show the typical appearance of a flywheel and clutch that has been damaged due to overheating of the clutch. Figures 4, 5 and 6 show the typical appearance of a good flywheel and clutch.

This procedure does not apply to or correct the normal characteristics of the twin-disc cera-metallic clutch used in the Shelby GT500 vehicle or normal wear. The twin disc cera-metallic clutch incorporates racing technology to combine a low inertia assembly with a very durable friction material with high torque capability. Depending on your driving technique, the smoothness of how the clutch reacts to clutch engagements may be different from other vehicles that use a single disc clutch system. Also refer to pages 8 and 9 of the GT500 Owner Guide Supplement for additional information.
Normal Operating Characteristics Of The Twin Disc Cera-metallic Clutch

  • Clutch chatter/shudder when engaging the clutch.
  • Narrow or abrupt engagement point.
  • Hiss upon clutch engagement or disengagement.
  • Transmission gear rollover noise at idle.
  • Gear rattle noise at very low speeds when in 1st or 2nd gear.
  • Normal wear.

Diagnosis And Service Procedure Update

Based on engineering analysis of all of the returned transmission components replaced when performing the prior TSBs, it has been determined that the synchronizer assemblies and transmission input shafts do not exhibit any abnormal wear that would require transmission component replacements.

A diagnostic procedure has been developed to confirm that the transmission synchronizers are operating properly and prevent any unnecessary transmission repairs.
Transmission Synchronizer Diagnosis Procedure

The following procedure is to be used to determine if the synchronizer assemblies in the transmission may have been damaged by attempting to operate the vehicle with a dragging clutch.

  • Set parking brake.
  • Transmission in neutral.
  • Start engine and allow it to idle.
  • Clutch engaged - pedal fully released.
  • Attempt to shift transmission into first gear by firmly pushing shift lever approximately 5-10 lb-ft (22-45 N-m) force for 2-3 seconds.
  • If the synchronizers are okay, the transmission will not make any clash or grinding noise. You will not be able to move the gearshift lever into the selected gear (the synchronizer will block out gear engagement) and the engine RPM will decrease slightly.
  • Repeat the synchronizer test (Step 5 and 6) on all of the other forward gears.
  • If the transmission passes the synchronizer test, the transmission will not require additional service; proceed with clutch/flywheel replacement only. Refer to Clutch Replacement procedure.
  • If clash/grinding noise is found when performing the synchronizer diagnostic, the transmission will need to be repaired along with the replacement of the clutch. Refer to Transmission Repair procedure.

Clutch Replacement

  • Remove the transmission per 2010 Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 308-03C.
  • Remove and replace flywheel per 2010 WSM, Section 303-01C. Discard old bolts and use new bolts.
  • Install new pilot bearing per 2010 WSM, Section 308-01.
  • Install new clutch disc and plate assembly per 2010 WSM, Section 308-01. Using new bolts.
  • Apply a small amount of Motorcraft® PTFE Lubricant to the clutch hub splines per 2010 WSM, Section 308-01.
  • Install new clutch slave cylinder and hydraulic line per 2010 WSM, Section 308-02.
  • Install the transmission per 2010 WSM, Section 308-03C.
  • Refer to Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Reprogramming.

Transmission Repair

  • Remove, drain, disassemble and clean the transmission per 2010 WSM, Section 308-03C.
  • Remove and replace input shaft and all synchronizer assemblies per 2010 WSM, Section 308-03C.
  • Assemble the transmission per 2010 WSM, Section 308-03C.
  • Install the transmission per 2010 WSM, Section 308-03C.
  • Refer to PCM Reprogramming.

PCM Reprogramming

The PCM must be reprogrammed after the clutch is replaced. Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using IDS release 65.07 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2010.1 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com.

Not sure how Ford determined that the machined spline that was a tight fit in the clutch disc in `07 & ` 08 that they claimed was a problem , deemed to be okay later in repairs unless the clutch disc spline clearance was increased. I have pictures of mine & I actually fit the old input shaft into the disc & with a very slight coat of rust it was binding.

Grabber, you did us a great service! Thank you!

Donny,

Did you have to push them to get the clutch covered? Was there anything that you said that really sealed the deal?

Dan

Not really. Just the stated issues listed on the TSB and that it's slipping because the dragging smoked the clutch.

Plus,I had the ESP and the TSB in hand and I went right to the service manager! All in all, he was pretty nice.

He did try the old... well the TSB is for troubleshooting and repair. I said yes, that's right it is. However, if there wasn't a problem with this clutch, then you wouldn't have a TSB would you?

Plus he looked the car over pretty good. There's no nicks, dents or scratches and it's nearly spotles. This Dealer does the Value Care oil changes for me and the tech does a 120K point inspection trying to find stuff to sell me. They even check and report the brake pad thickness on the form I get.

They just called and it's ready, so 1/2 day of vacation for me and I'm off to see how it drives
