Gt/sc Conversion Or Not To?

I have 2007 Shelby GT 17,000 miles and I torn on what I should do about adding a supercharger. I have spoken to Shelby and Tasca Ford about doing the conversion and I am really torn if the car is really worth having them do the work or just purchase a supercharger and have a local shop do it? Tasca is about 8 weeks out and Shelby is at least 4 months as of Wednesday.

Can anyone give me some advise on what way I should go based on your experiences.

Thanks in advance

Randy

My car is at Shelby now. I am sold on having SAI do the work.

If you are wondering if you will get your invrstment back then don't do it. Odds of breaking even $$$ wise is slim. But we can all hope for market realization of what a GT/SC is...... Some day.

To take a car you already (should) love to the next level and be proud of your investment and the enjoyment you get out of it is priceless and worth every penny you can afford.

I can't wait to pick mine up.

Done right, these cars are amazing.

If you want the pedigree, have Shelby do it. For me it was the only option as it was important for me to be documented as such. It's based on what matters to you. The SC will perform regardless of who installs it as long as it is quality work and a good tune.

Well said Harald, I concur!

It's your money, and your car so do what you like. Don't get bullied into believing that your car is "better" or "worse" with the same parts installed by different QUALIFIED shops. Use your common sense and spend your money wisely. As for a supercharger upgrade - your car will be very quick and I believe that the TUNE would be as important as the parts installation - both for power, driveability and longevity of your engine. I suppose there are some here that think the FRPP tune or a custom tune done at a Shelby mod shop is better than what you could get by the nation's best custom tuners? Does that even make sense?

I had my SC package installed last summer at Shelby. I was very pleased with their work and service. You will truely have a special car with unbelievable performance.

L@@Ks great!

Tasca Ford does not install the KB unit due to "issues", only the Whipple. AS I said before 8 weeks for Tasca and 4 months for Shelby!

Maybe I should go ahead with my LT headers and Hot Rod Cams and have Shelby do the MOD next winter.

Thanks

Randy5182-

You will enjoy the power upgrade no matter what direction you choose to go. I had mine done at Tasca and have no regrets about the additional money spent on getting a documented conversion done. It was completed years ago and I still love it. If you think you enjoy driving your car now wait until you have a permanent grin on you face after the install. Do some research on cam install before a Whipple conversion I was advised against doing it. It may have been something to do with the fact of the combined power increase of both the cams and supercharger. The 4.6L is not the most stout engine block. It's a shame because I like the sound of those cams. - Kevin

I am under the understanding that CAMS and headers are torque neutral, torque kills not HP, and really depends on the tune that is done on the car. Correct me if I am wrong but don't the cams hurt low end torque and that's OK in a supercharger car.

The cams and headers are a trade off with the wife as she like the lope of the cams and sound of headers and I want the power.

Need to decide and get my name in the hat at Tasca.

I can vouch for the LT's and FRPP Hot Rod Cams and tune. I loved the combination so much that I did it twice. It's unbelievable. Now, originally, I wanted to stay naturally aspirated on the GT-C. I want to SC it but concerned about the combination with the supercharger(per earlier comments).

Did you think my GT/SC was "doggy" with the hot rod cams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think you left your lunch in my car after your ride!!! :clapping: :clapping: :drop:

Great question and if I were going to go the SC route, I would want the work done by a Shelby Mod Shop so that it was documented. Not for the future collectability, possible appreciation etc, but in my eyes, I would want to keep my Shelby in line with the heritage it started with when it was converted. If Shelby offered a upgraded NA package I would put my money into it as well just to keep it 'Shelby' and documented. My personal opinion is based more on the name and history it represents than any future dollar amount it might command.

But that said, it is your car and your money, make the best choice for you are your dollars. At the end of the day, you are the one driving it and if you are happy.....who cares what anyone else thinks?

If the work is done by Shelby the car remains OEM. Shelby original. That may not be that big of a deal to some but for me that means a lot. Just my 2cents.

I respectfully disagree with this logic. OEM is how it came off the truck. A mod is a mod no matter who performed the installation.

I agree, a mod is a mod. All of the Shelbys we drive came off of the truck as a particular model. In most cases as Mustang GT's, Shelby GT 500's and in some cases the V-6. Shelby American is without a doubt the best and most sophisticated mod shop in existence. So in my opinion all of us that drive cars with a CSM # have modified cars. I would also say they are very special modified cars.

Get yours tuned at the nations best custom tuners and see if it lasts, a few on here have learned that the hard way. I will stick with the Ford Racing tune.

I don't comment on here much anymore buy your comment about installing headers and cams and having Shelby do the install later caught my attention. If you want Shelby or Tasca to do the install later then you will have to remove the header's and most likely the cams before being sc;d by them. When I had mine installed, Shelby told me my shorty headers had to be removed by me or they could remove them for a fee.Maybe Jer or Steve can comment on this. I have driven about 8,000 miles with the whipple without any problems. As for as whether it would be considered factory or not, Shelby gives you a tag that says factory supercharged by Shelby American to install on your shock tower or wherever you want to install it, so yes I would say you are factory supercharged if Shelby or Tasca does the work. Good luck on whatever direction you go.

I don't know why ya'll get all your panties in a wad about this every time. They guy posted in here in the first place which tells me he wants Shelby to do it and that is fine. Every one has their own opinions about what to do with their car. I guess I am of a different breed in that I believe in doing the work to my car myself much the same way Carol did back in the day. Do what you feel is best for you. I don't plan on selling my car so the actual value of it is of little consequence to me. Now if someone came along with a suitcase of $100 bills totaling enough to make me retire, I MIGHT consider. Don't see that happening tho. Happy Shelbying. :)

I had the local Ford garage do hers with the Ford tune. The additional costs to ship it out to Vegas was a deciding factor. Would I have prefered to let Shelby do it? Yes. But the extra money to ship it went towards the cost of the SC instead.

All I know is that after it was done my better half was pleased. It does not and will not have the GT/SC stripes on it. It looks like a sleeper until she gets on it. It does open a few eyes then.

For Dooogs and Wick: Maytag shaved 2 seconds off her time to the mailbox and back. :hysterical:
