Actually, I was talking about McLaren and Porsche when I said they...lol

 

I would not bet against a Ford supercar of some kind. Nothing I've heard from Ford. But there are outside companies that have been tapped for manufacture of certain components that number under 5000. (Some of the same companies that did components on the FGT)

 

Who knows what it is going in, but there is definitely something coming in the next 3 years. Something big. I sure wish I was privy.

Yes, I heard the same rumor but it seems to have maybe the same voracity as all the discussions about a 700+HP GT350. I'll believe it when I see it. In fact, the two may be the right combination of rumors, but that would just start another rumor...

Chevy just announced the new Z06 Corvette they will make will have a supercharged 650 HP engine. Ford better keep up.

Ford needs to release a supercar to compete with the Z06. The Mustang is not the chassis to do so.

Ford will struggle mightily to come up with a platform that can compete with the Corvette (of any class). It is the price/feature point they need to compete though. It's not "supercar" class which is what the Ford GT happened to be, but is not affordable given the market penetration of 3000 or so units a year. They need to get in to a market that gives them 10000 units a year to amortize the development costs.

 

And the Corvette is NOT a supercar.

 

And the problem (for any competitor) or an asset (if you are Chevrolet) is that the Corvette is perhaps the "high performance vehicle deal of the century". I've driven both Mustangs (my own) and Corvettes (Bondurant) and I'd take a 'Vette on a road track 8 days a week. If you want a straight line car, get a Mustang.

 

Ford will struggle deciding which market segment they want to get. Honestly, I can't see them stealing enough of the Corvette market to make it worth while. They have absolutely NO history on which to do that.

You're obviously not too educated on any of the newer corvettes. Take the Z06 for example Base price at $85,000.00 and very close, in a lot of ways to many so called "Supercars on the market but at a tenth of the price. Hype and glamour in a name sometimes is all that it is.

No. Sorry. The Corvette (all flavors) is a sports car. It does not meet the criteria of a supercar. A Corvette is no competition for a McLaren.

 

There is no doubt the Corvette is the SPORTS CAR deal of the century.

I think it was on one of the cable "Motor shows" that they described a Supercar. One of the parameters was that it cost over $100K enabling the FGT to be considered a Supercar. Had they said over $200K, the FGT couldn't be considered a Supercar.

 

My definition: I can't define what a Supercar is but when I see one, I know it's a Supercar!

I frankly never thought of the Ford GT as a Supercar. Supercardom has a lot more to it than just price. There is a performance aspect as well. For that the FGT qualifies.

I never considered the Ford GT a supercar, but MODIFIED Ford GTs certainly can claim that status and more. Ford GTs pretty much own the record book for the standing mile

Since we are getting technical about it, the McLaren is a hypercar..... and you are correct the Corvette is not in the same class. With that said, the Ford GT and the Corvette Z06 both have been deemed in the same class and called supercars by automotive media. My point is simply this: Ford needs to create and sell a car that is priced similarly, match or exceed performance, with an aero design. The Mustang isn't it.

I wrote like five different responses. Lol. I've had to erase them all. It's not rumor from my side. I'll leave it at that.

 

For those at Dearborn last year, we had a q and a with Jamal Hameedi, and I asked him straight up why Ford won't build a sports car, and he basically said GM has a 60 year head start with the Vette. They are willing to concede that market. He ACTUALLY said that. In front of like 100 of us.

 

I'm not getting sucked into supercar arguments, suffice to say that if I see 3 or more driving by me a day, and I don't work for Top Gear, its probably not a supercar.

That's disappointing to hear. With that type of mentality, corporate America would have never flourished. Seems like a defeatist attitude to me.
