How Many Gt/sc's? Is There A Specific Registry?

Hello, I am a newbie to the forum. I come from SVT cars and 2004 Cobras (aka, "Terminator"), and I am thinking about joining the ranks of Shelby owners. And I want something special, . . . which brings me to your cars. I would appreciate any help with the following questions:

 

1. Were GT/SC's made in only 2008? I see where the option exists for 2014.

 

2. Is there a record of how many GT/SC were sold/made, and sorted by color and transmission?

 

3. Is there a Registry just for the GT/SC?

 

4. Were most/all GT/SC's a custom order, or did some dealers have pre-built models in their showrooms for sale?

 

5. Did customers get a choice of blowers--Whipple, Paxton, Bell, or Eaton?

 

6. After leaving Shelby site, did the cars come with dyno numbers from Shelby.

 

7. Are the cars usually insured and titled as Mustang GT's?

 

8. Anything on the VIN or data plate to verify the Shelby connection or build history?

 

9. What does the "SC" stand for?

 

10. Finally, any recommended references--books or web--about the GT/SC?

 

I love your cars, based on what I know so far. Now I want to know more. All help greatly appreciated, Thanks

SC = supercharger = GT/SC

 

A good estimate for the 2007-2008 GT/SC (and 2006-2007 GT Hertz) production is under 200 cars. No registry. They are post title cars meaning they were converted after the fact and were not sold by Ford as a GT/SC. If dealers had GT/SC's for sale in the showroom, they were converted after the purchase of the car. Blowers - Whipple and Bell and a few Paxtons in 2006 and 2007.

 

Shelby has the production numbers but have never published them. Cars did not come with dyno sheets. The cars are insured as Mustand GTs unless you have it insured as a collector car with higher value-stated insurance. The VIN does not indicate the car is a GT/SC, but all true GT/SC Mustangs were converted by Shelby or one of their authorized mod shops. A special Shelby plate is affixed to the radiator support indicating the SGT was converted to a supercharged SGT.

 

I have never seen any books written about the GT/SC.

 

Maybe Jer will stop by this thread with any other additional info.

Since you are looking at GT/SC's, I assume you know something about the history of the Shelby GT. If not, I would highly recommend reading this thread as it has some good info on the Shelby GT which began it's life as a pre-title car.

I would agree more than likely under 200 total cars, mine was one of the First Whipple 550's, if you got yours completed at Tasca it DID include a few Dyno Runs, I was standing next to my car when Dennis from Tasca Ran it. To me this should be mandatory.

 

The GT/SC changed over time, in the beginning you could choose your own options, after a few years they made it a Package, you pretty much had to get everything they wanted you to get. They are incredible Cars, if you buy one I highly recommend getting one that has only had the Ford Racing Tune, the only issues I have seen or heard about are folks that messed with the tune and tried getting more power.

Since the program is still available, Shelby will not release any production numbers. People have taken numbers and made them sound as if only "X" amount of certain models were made in an effort to fool the unknown. Believe it or not there are people out there that will lie about anything!

No they were made in 2007 in Black/White, in 2008 in Blue. Also in 2008 orange and the Black Barrett Jackson had Red Stripes instead of Silver.

Probably but none of us have seen it......

I heard there is.

They all came from an SAI approved Mod Center

 

5. Did customers get a choice of blowers--Whipple, Paxton, Bell, or Eaton?

 

As stated earlier Whipple, Kenne Bell, and a few Paxtons. Most were Whipple, keep in mind there are also different Whipples.

 

6. After leaving Shelby site, did the cars come with dyno numbers from Shelby.

 

As I stated above everyone leaving Tasca did, SAI in Vegas did not provide this service.

Yes

Stated above we got a Plate, we also got Certificates if we wanted to buy them.

Supercharged

 

10. Finally, any recommended references--books or web--about the GT/SC?

 

This Forum will provide the most information you will find, they are very rare, I do not know of any books or Magazine type reviews.

SEARCH and keep reading, there is a lot to know. If you plan to buy one there was a few for sale, it is MUCH cheaper to buy one already complete than buy a Shelby GT and have it done yourself. I have been tempted to sell myself, but every time I look at it I stop myself, I just do not drive it much.

good point way back when... If you had you car SC'd at a Shelby authorized shop they put the GT/SC stripe on it. It wasn't until July of 09 that the model was made specific, by that I mean you "had" to get the SC, ss brake lines and slotted rotors and a gauge package. Above that there were several other options available.

I did not realize it was July 09, looks like I got mine done just before the changes. I got a ton of extra stuff done, it was all a'la carte.

 

By the way OP the pictures below are at Tasca when I picked my car up, that is the Dyno they did as well. Mine apparently is a little higher than what they have gotten on other GT/SC's, he said he thinks the One Piece drive-shaft probably added 5 or so extra HP. That said others have gotten more, but it really depends on the Dyno and Conditions during the run.

Just to clarify Tasca did not Dyno all cars that were converted. If you requested it they would. I know this for a fact because mine was not done.

If I remember correctly you had belt problems, correct? Any issues after the 10 Rib??

That was before the upgraded Whipple 550 as well, I would bet a good driver could come close to high 11's/Low 12's with the 550.

you are correct. The 10 rib solved them, not a lick of trouble since the install.

Thanks, and more thanks! I'm a good example of how difficult it can be for an "outsider" to understand and appreciate your cars, and I'm a car enthusiast with knowledge of SVT through 2004. Everyone seems to know the GT500, if only because so many have been made, and they are striking cars and have re-written the history of modern muscle cars. They have earned their high status, but they are not particularly exclusive cars at this time.

 

The GT/SC is appealing to me because of its beauty, exclusivity, near 500 rwhp, and special post-title treatment.

 

To really get the full bang for your buck, I think GT/SC owners need to pull together and launch some marketing/publicity campaigns. If I buy, I will throw some effort this way. As a beginning, a web site devoted to the GT/SC would be needed. And it is a simple design, and not intended to compete with this Forum. The site would contain history, some Forums, cross-links to this Forum (and similar), member profiles with photos, an attempt at a Registry, and streaming feeds for Shelby related issues. The goal is to send buyers and information-seekers to a single site, versus having to pour through Forums and search endlessly online. I spent a number of hours attempting to learn all that I could, and this single thread helped me more than I read all day.

 

Secondly, and related to my thoughts above, a book on the GT/SC needs to be published. Publishing the book is easy and I would finance that part; however, it is essential to get some experts to write chapters such 1. Who was Carroll Shelby? 2. Shelby Mustang History: the 1960's 3. Shelby History: the 2005 to Present. 4. The Mustang GT 5. The Mustang GT/SC. 6. Registry, with photos and owner profiles. That book would put all GT/SC owners on a new, public plateau. And when time comes to sell your car, . . . reference page xx of the book and show your photos, certificate, whatever. Just some thoughts.

That was before the upgraded Whipple 550 as well, I would bet a good driver could come close to high 11's/Low 12's with the 550.

 

12.077 flat, street tires is the best I could do, usually I ran a 12.4. Traction is issue.

I got mine done in August 09, before the package was mandatory.

My input - the Shelby GT/SC is a very special car. It is the most fun toy I have ever had. If you are thinking about it - do it. You will be satisfied.

 

I'm glad I made two of them, both Barrett Jacksons, both convertibles :) The automatic was actually more than a handful with the SC. I never got to drive the 5-speed with the S/C but without it it was almost as much.

Agree. Very good article. Has anyone gone to the track and got low 12's and/or trap speed north of 115?

You can see my trap speed below. That is as a complete novice, street pressure and no burn out. I lagged until I hit 2nd, little scratch, little scratch in 3rd... Someone good could (easily?) hit 12 flat, I think.
