philip 87
Hello TS. Not wanting the standard mustang emblem in my Shelby, I had changed out the stock mustang airbag/horn assembly on my 2007 Shelby GT and installed the 2010 Shelby GT 500 version and I wanted to share with TS members the simple process. For those interested in doing a swap, it's quite easy. First off, a big thanks to Larry T for directing me in finding this part. There still is a few on the big auction site. I paid $129 shipped. The part is called a Cobra Jet airbag COVER. It does not have an airbag in it. You would have to swap the airbag into the new cover. Very simple really. Drill out the 3 rivets, gently remove airbag and re install it into new cover and install 3 new rivets. Save the original one of coarse as it can always be re installed. I'm trying to post pics of steps. Edited January 6, 2014 by philip
philip 87
First, disconnect battery. Some folks also remove fuse to airbag. Remove 2 lil plastic plugs on either side of Steering Wheel. Use a tiny screwdriver and they flip right out. Using a 5/16 socket, remove both bolts on each side. The airbag is now free and gently pull it up, slowly, as it has 2 short yellow connectors which you will need to unplug. They will both have obvious squeeze point disconnects. One is grey and the other is black. You can't do it wrong if you tried. Here's some pics on these steps. philip 87
Here are some pics of the original cover and assembly along with the new cover. You will need to drill out the 3 rivets holding the airbag. Very simple. Once free, you need to remove it. The bag assembly sits into 3 grooves molded into the cover on one side and 4 on the other. Take your time. There is some wiggle room where you can gently push the airbag down allowing you to free the assembly from these grooves. Once free, you can lift the assembly out. It feels tight but it comes out quite easily. Here are some pics of the original and the new cover to recieve the bag assembly.
philip 87
Once the bag is installed in new cover, simply re rivet in the 3 locations. It can only go in one way so you can't really do it wrong. The covers are identical in every way. Even has the same part # molded inside. philip 87
Before and after..... Obviously I changed my steering wheel for a wood one and if I can assist with wheel change, I'd be happy to help. Another very simple job. Total time..............1 hour. tpow96
Nice write up. I really like your wood steering wheel. Where did you get that from? Ditto. I had seen this wheel before and thought they were no longer available. -Tom
philip 87
I forget what the company name was. Actually, I found it here on team Shelby from a fellow member.
philip 87
I may remove it and re install the original leather wheel. This wood wheel looks amazing with a black interior and I don't think it compliments my grey interior. I may let it go.
Larry T
Philip, please let me know if you decide to part with the wheel as I may be interested in it.
philip 87
I did some looking and some research. These wheels are no longer made. They were pricey and thats probably the reason their not available. They sold for $1000 and the Company would refund $250 core exchange if you sent in your original in exchange which I chose not to do. I kept the original wheel for obvious reasons. Larry T, you have first right of refusal my friend. Here's what she looks like in a Shelby GT-H. ........Philip
