"break-in (radiator) fan"

Never heard of such a thing, until today when one of my auto-oriented friends said he had read of a 260 Cobra that still had the "break-in (radiator) fan", which ordinarily would have been replaced during the first factory service, in it.

 

So, let's just accept that such a thing existed; now, what was the rationale? Get as technical as you want, but provide a translation if you go too deep.
